On Friday, the Minnesota Lynx will be playing without their biggest star. Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been ruled out of Friday's matchup against the Phoenix Mercury with a knee injury. Collier, the Lynx's leading scorer by a significant margin, was ruled as a "game-time decision" prior to Friday. The team announced the news shortly before tipoff, with Alanna Smith replacing Collier in the starting lineup in Phoenix. Ahead of the game, Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve told reporters that sitting Collier was "more precautionary," and that Collier had been dealing with the knee injury since 2023. Advertisement Collier, 28, is one of the top scorers in the league, and an early frontrunner for WNBA MVP. She currently leads the league in points per game with 26.5. This story will be updated.

Lynx star Napheesa Collier named West's best player in season's 1st week

The Minnesota Lynx have yet to lose a game this season, thanks in large part to the play of superstar Napheesa Collier. For her efforts, Collier has earned the WNBA's Western Conference Player of the Week title. The award only covers the Lynx's first four games, during which she averaged 29.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Her five-game totals put Collier atop the WNBA in points per game (26.8) and player efficiency rating (33.4), second in offensive win shares (1.1), 10th in rebounds per game (7.8), fourth in steals per game (2.4) and fifth in blocks per game (1.4). The season is still nascent, but Collier is playing at an MVP level. Last season, Collier made the All-WNBA First Team and was named Defensive Player of the Year amid the Lynx's surprising but ultimately unavailing run to the WNBA Finals. She also won a gold medal with Team USA at the Summer Olympics. Since then, she's had a productive offseason. She was named the MVP of Unrivaled, the 3-on-3 basketball league she co-founded, and TIME magazine listed her among its 100 Most Influential People.

Lynx stay unbeaten, hold off Storm's comeback in gritty win

Give Seattle credit for hanging tough against the juggernaut Minnesota Lynx (5-0), but the Storm could sustain a comeback effort after falling behind by 15 points in the first quarter. Seattle (3-2) trimmed the deficit to 10 points at the half and cut Minnesota's lead to three after three quarters, but the undefeated Lynx never gave up the lead after trailing 2-0 and they went on to win 82-77 Tuesday night at Target Center in Minneapolis. Minnesota, one of two unbeaten teams along with the New York Liberty, got another great performance from point guard Courtney Williams, who finished with 23 points, five rebounds and four assists. The veteran made 10-of-18 shots in 33 minutes. MVP candidate Napheesa Collier finished with just 16 points — well shy of her league-leading 29.5 points per game entering the night — on 7-of-18 shooting, but she made up for a rough shooting night with 10 rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks. Alanna Smith gave the Lynx 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Kayla McBride, making her season debut, was in the starting lineup and finished with 15 points in 31 minutes. Gabby Williams led Seattle with 20 points and Skylar Diggins contributed 18. Up next: Lynx at Phoenix Mercury, Friday at 9 p.m. CT.
