Abandoned bag causes bomb scare in market in Meghalayas Shillong

Last Updated: Shillong, Jul 18 (PTI) An abandoned bag, suspected to contain ganja and initially feared to be an explosive device, sparked a brief security scare at Polo Bazaar here on Friday, prompting immediate deployment of the Bomb Disposal Squad, police said. The black bag was spotted around 2 pm near a busy section of the market, raising alarm among bystanders. As police cordoned off the area and summoned bomb experts, a man identified as Nijimu Fithu (24), a resident of Kenuozou Colony in Nagaland's Kohima Sadar, suddenly appeared and claimed the bag as his, East Khasi Hills district Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem told PTI. Despite the claim, security forces proceeded with caution, adhering to standard operating procedures. The Bomb Disposal Squad conducted a meticulous inspection to eliminate the possibility of an explosive device. What they found instead were multiple packets suspected to contain ganja, officials said. The Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) was immediately alerted and has since taken over the case for detailed investigation under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Police are probing Fithu's involvement and questioning him regarding the source and intended destination of the contraband. The incident not only disrupted normalcy in the bustling market area for over an hour but also highlighted the ongoing concerns over drug trafficking in the region, a police officer supervising the operation said. DRI nabs foreign national woman on bus with crystal meth worth Rs 7.63 cr

Pune, Jul 17 (PTI) The Pune unit of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested a foreign national from a bus on the Mumbai-Bengaluru highway and allegedly seized 3.815 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine worth Rs 7.63 crore from her, an official said on Thursday. The woman, who was travelling from Delhi to the Karnataka capital, was held on a specific tip-off that she was carrying psychotropic substances, the DRI official said. 'A team comprising personnel from DRI and Customs in Pune mounted surveillance along the highway and intercepted the suspect in transit. An initial search of the passenger and her baggage did not yield any contraband. However, during a detailed rummaging of the bus, officers located a second bag concealed at the rear of the vehicle," the official said. 'A thorough inspection of the hidden baggage revealed six salwar suits, each folded with specially designed cardboard inserts. These inserts had cavities lined with polythene, which contained a white crystalline substance. Field testing confirmed the presence of amphetamine in the 3.815 kg of recovered substance, which is suspected to be crystal meth," the official added. She was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and further probe into the smuggling network is underway, he added.
