CM launches year-long campaign against drugs

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday launched a year-long State-wide campaign against drugs and intoxicants and asserted that awareness is the only solution to prevent tobacco-related deaths in the country. Majhi launched the campaign at the State-level programme held on the occasion of 'World No Tobacco Day'. 'About 1.4 million people lose their lives in India every year due to tobacco use. Among the deaths reported in the country every year due to various causes, about 10 per cent are due to tobacco use alone,' he said. Stating that it was time for the public, especially the youth, to take this issue seriously, Majhi appealed to all to join the awareness campaign against intoxicants and drugs. 'I call upon all to take a resolution to adopt a life free from addiction. Say no to tobacco, say yes to life,' he said. The awareness campaign will continue for about a year across the State from May 31 to June 26 in the first phase, June 26 to August 15 in the second phase, October 2 (third phase) and December 25 to January 15, 2026 in the fourth phase. The Chief Minister said the door-to-door awareness campaign will create awareness about the ill effects and health hazards of tobacco use. He said people should be made aware that 100 per cent of oral cavity cancer or lung cancer is caused by tobacco and cigarette use. 'If the only truth in the world is death, then why should it be painful? Therefore, everyone should adopt a healthy lifestyle,' he said, adding that advertisements of tobacco, cigarettes and drugs are also affecting the youth. He advised people to be careful about these deceptive advertisements. The Chief Minister also stressed on enforcement to check the prevalence of drug abuse and adulterated liquor. He said joint efforts should be made by Excise, Home Department and Narcotics Control Bureau to take strict action against the culprits. 'Efforts are being made to completely stop the sale of tobacco and drugs by empowering the STF. A new excise policy will be formulated soon to crack down on all types of intoxicants,' the Chief Minister said. At the event, Majhi launched the logo, theme song and handbook of the State-wide awareness campaign. Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the government has, for the first time, launched a comprehensive awareness programme against the use of tobacco, alcohol and drugs. 'We will spread this message to the last person of the society. Apart from excise, the participation of other departments and civil society is also needed. The punishment for the offenders under the new Excise Act will be stricter,' he said. Odisha's brand ambassador of Nishamukti Abhiyan and sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik said it is the responsibility and duty of all to take this campaign to every home. The district collectors and excise officers of all the districts attended the programme virtually. In another event organised by the Health and Family Welfare department, stress was laid on interdepartmental coordination and public engagement. On this occasion, a signature campaign was launched to involve citizens in pledging their support to a tobacco-free Odisha. The department also released newly developed IEC (information-education campaign) materials to educate the public, particularly youth and vulnerable communities, on the risks associated with tobacco use. The event also witnessed the digital launch of the ToFEI (Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions) web application, which will assist schools and colleges in self-assessing and reporting their compliance with national tobacco-free guidelines.

BHUBANESWAR: With approximately 1.4 million people losing their lives each year due to tobacco consumption, accounting for around 10 per cent of the total deaths annually, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday called upon all to take a pledge to say no to tobacco and other intoxicants. Launching a year-long awareness campaign on World No Tobacco Day at the Lok Seva Bhawan, the chief minister expressed serious concern over tobacco use in the society and stressed the need to launch a movement, especially among the youth, to curb the addiction. 'If we can make one person aware, we can save his life. I appeal each and all to spread awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption and the health risks associated with it. IGP: Indian drug kingpin hiding in KL hotel arrested, deported after joint Bukit Aman operation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 1 — Police have arrested an Indian national suspected of being the notorious drug kingpin of a transnational syndicate who is wanted by his country's government while hiding in a hotel in the capital here on May 13. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the 30-year-old man was arrested by a team from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (JSJ) together with the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) when he was located in a hotel room at 1.35 am. He said checks found that the man was believed to have been in the country since early this year on a tourist pass. 'Further investigations found that the man had no involvement in drug trafficking activities in Malaysia. 'However, further action and intelligence are being actively carried out by the JSJN to identify if the man has a network or is involved in secret society activities in Malaysia,' he said when contacted here yesterday. Following that, Razarudin said the foreign national, who was listed as a wanted individual or fugitive by the Indian government, was deported to his country on a flight at 6.54 pm on Tuesday (May 27). The 'Indian Express' newspaper reported earlier (on May 28) that the drug kingpin of an international drug syndicate was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of India after being extradited from Malaysia. The international syndicate led by the man is believed to be carrying out drug smuggling worth 1,128 crore (RM635 million) including cocaine and marijuana obtained from the United States through cargo shipments. — Bernama

Amid crackdowns, renewed thrust on awareness campaigns to fight drug menace

Ranchi: Besides cracking down on illegal poppy cultivation and drug peddling, state and Central forces are also carrying out an extensive awareness campaign across the state to curb the supply of illicit drugs and their and their consumption. Now, in a separate move, the state govt last week trained around 850 master trainers. Each of them will, in turn, train dozens of people in their areas for conducting state-wide awareness against drug abuse from June 10 to 26. Inspector General Criminal Investigation Department Asim Vikrant Minz said, "The drive will be conducted in schools, colleges, slums, other hotspots in urban areas, and also the villages where poppy cultivation is done." It may be stated here that the police administration is also conducting an awareness drive against opium cultivation and drug abuse over the years through meetings, pamphlets, posters, and innovative methods like the distribution of chocolates with messages on their wrappers. The state govt is waging a crusade against poppy plantation, leading to the demolition of plants on over 27,000 acres in 2025. The police registered 313 cases and arrested 237 persons this year compared to 41 cases and 24 arrests last year. As in past years, the Narcotics Control Bureau provided the coordinates of areas with poppy plantations to the police so that the destruction drive could take place. With strict actions being taken by the police, villagers also destroyed crops grown in their areas and provided information to the police. Local elected representatives, including mukhiyas, were instructed that they too would be held responsible if poppy cultivation was found in their area. Speaking on the issue, principal secretary home Vandana Dadel said recently, "The state govt will promote alternative farming to replace poppy cultivation on cultivable land and also the planting of tree saplings through the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Programme in the forest areas." It may be stated here that the administration has already started distributing seeds of commercial crops among farmers to turn them away from poppy cultivation. Sarique Omar, superintendent of police of NCB, said, "The Centre is carrying out the Nasha Mukt Bharat drive in coordination with various govt departments. The Centre has also asked various spiritual organisations, including the Art of Living, ISKCON, and Shri Ram Chandra Mission, to conduct awareness against drug abuse." He stated that a toll-free number, 1933, has been issued for receiving tip-offs regarding illicit drugs and helping persons aiming for de-addiction.
