Woodland vines curl up onto the ceiling. A velvet curtain sways in the corner, hiding a miniature stage. There are climbing rocks disguised as mossy boulders, brass knobs shaped like mushrooms and snails, and a soft, golden light that makes the whole room feel like it's been dipped in whimsy. This is the exact feeling Joanna Gaines just recreated in her latest Mini Reni makeover: a storybook playroom that channels all the magic of Narnia. The moment you pass through the secret bookcase door, you're transported into a space that feels enchanted, immersive and undeniably luxe. The new Magnolia Network series (airing Wednesdays at 8/7c on Magnolia and Max) trades whole-home renovations for deeply personal, single-room transformations—often designed for friends or team members. And in this episode, Jo leans all the way into fantasy, with every detail more charming than the last. Want to know which buzzy products are *really* worth buying? Courtesy of Magnolia Network Step through the bookcase and you're instantly transported to a playroom with warm layers of texture and charm. 'This arched door, flanked by corresponding shelves, served as the inspiration for the rest of the space,' Jo explains in her Magnolia journal. Rather than contrast it, she leaned all the way in, painting the ceiling, walls, and cabinetry in Sherwin-Williams's Jute Brown (Satin Finish). 'A simple paint refresh helped highlight the original beauty of the arched trimwork, molding, and planked ceiling while staying within budget,' she adds. The result? Immersive and cocooning without feeling dark—a clever way to add depth while letting the architecture do the talking. Courtesy of Magnolia Network Then there's the bay window. Instead of leaving it as-is, she turned it into a multifunctional stage-slash-bench, complete with scalloped trim, pull-out drawers and a blue houndstooth cushion that feels pulled from a Wes Anderson set. 'The homeowners' children love performing, so the team added a large cushion that can be easily removed—converting the seat to a stage,' she explains. 'To lean into the theatre feel, we added light blue velvet curtains across a brass rod—perfect for putting on a play!' Not to mention the opposite wall, which highlights a custom interactive panel with colored pegs and a rock wall that would make any Pinterest parent swoon. 'To help foster creativity and curiosity, we added a wooden interactive wall—complete with colored pegs for pattern-making and rocks for climbing,' Jo notes. Courtesy of Magnolia Network The rest of the space is filled with woodland whimsy: arched cabinets with mushroom- and snail-shaped hardware, botanical art in vintage frames, leafy potted plants and C.F.A. Voysey wallpaper that wraps up onto the ceiling like a storybook scene. 'During the process, we discovered that this particular [wallpaper] print is actually a restoration of one of C.F.A. Voysey's most elaborate patterns.' Even the adjacent closet-turned-toy room was given the full treatment, complete with striped wallpaper, scalloped trim and wooden cubbies that make cleaning up feel like part of the play. She explains, 'We chose a light-blue, vertical-striped wallpaper to help elongate the small nook and installed more scalloped picture rail where the wall and ceiling meet.' Courtesy of Magnolia Network All in all, she summarizes, 'I absolutely love how this space turned out. There are so many layers of story and detail within this tiny room that you could discover something new every time you step inside. Even though we created this space for a [longtime friend and her three kids], I hope it's a room that inspires the whole family to savor the magic of childlike wonder for years to come.' Esther McGregor Reflects on Her Famous Family and Finding Her Path
Justin French Mididress, boots, Gucci. Bracelet, ring, Van Cleef & Arpels. It was one of the most significant moments of her career, and Esther McGregor was experiencing it on her phone. When two major projects, and , premiered at the Venice Film Festival, she was an ocean away, filming her new series We Were Liars in Nova Scotia. 'I felt the excitement through my iPhone,' she recalls. 'I was reading the articles sent to me in the midst of the craze of filming, and being like, Whoa.' We Were Liars is McGregor's first costarring role, and while she's tried a lot of things (modeling, music, and tattoo artistry), she knows now that there's only one central thing she's meant to be doing. 'I live and breathe acting,' she says. She's doing a lot of it. In the past 18 months, she's been able to work with legends like Pedro Almodóvar, Nicole Kidman, Halina Reijn, Julianne Moore, and Tilda Swinton (McGregor is a big Narnia fan). She recently booked a role in the film Clean Hands as Zach Braff's daughter. Justin French Mididress, Gucci. Ring, Van Cleef & Arpels. Working with this caliber of director is particularly meaningful for someone who was raised immersed in international film. McGregor's father is actor Ewan McGregor, and her mother, Eve Mavrakis, is a production designer. Growing up surrounded by acting only helped grow her love of the craft. 'I definitely came out singing, for sure,' she says. 'But being in close proximity to anything will build its charm—I immediately fell in love with it.' 'But being in close proximity to anything will build its charm—I immediately fell in love with [acting].' Her background and advantages gave her career a boost, and also provided her with an example of what it could look like. 'I want to give the gratitude that I think deserves its place, in terms of being raised in a family in film. Being able to be on sets really aided that love and that breath and that heartbeat. As much as I don't think I would be able to do anything else, who knows? It was the way that I was born, the world I was born into. So I feel very thankful that I'm able to do what I do, because I need it.' Justin French Blazer, shirt, trousers, Saint Laurent. Before she gained renown for her acting, McGregor caught the public eye as a model for brands like Miu Miu and Dolce & Gabbana. It was something that she'd first dabbled in as a student at NYU, as a multidisciplinary major that incorporated fashion. 'I randomly started doing little photo shoots with my sister [model and actress Clara McGregor] and with people around New York City, like artists and my friends that were selling clothes' and needed someone to model them. 'It just [turned] into something a bit bigger than I thought it would be,' she says. Justin French Mididress, boots, Gucci. Bracelet, ring, Van Cleef & Arpels. Music is also important to McGregor. She released an EP with fellow musician and longtime friend Leo Major, as part of the duo French Thyme. She also loves tattoo art. She got into it when auditions and acting opportunities slowed down during the pandemic, opening a tattoo shop called Pink Ether, right by the Empire State Building, with her friend Melissa Monroe. 'It's like a therapeutic heartbeat...I've always been fascinated with tattoo artists and the art, but I never imagined myself being in that position. Now I can't imagine myself living without it,' McGregor says. 'When I'm home on my time off, I do it. I do it whenever I can.' Pink Ether closed when she moved back to Los Angeles, but the art remains important to her. She even celebrated the last day of filming We Were Liars in Canada by tattooing one of the show's crew. 'Something that I have to work on daily is this idea of perfection, and having to make sure that you are perfect for everyone at all times.' Justin French Blazer, shirt, trousers, Saint Laurent. 'I couldn't sit still when I was little, and I couldn't do everything that I wanted to do. My mom was great and really taught me how to be bored. But I birthed way too many hobbies,' McGregor explains. 'I'm glad that I've solidified them down to a few, and that I let them come and go when they need to.' She sees some of her own passion in Mirren, her teenage character in We Were Liars , a Prime Video adaptation of the ultra-popular 2014 book by E. Lockhart. McGregor was thrilled at the chance to play a younger character who reminded her of herself. 'I tried to conquer the world the same way that she did at that age. I was poisoned with empathy, and I found it really hard to be deceiving, or to be untruthful and messy and not perfect,' she says. 'She's one of the first characters I've played who has this bounciness of youth. Her youth is very energetic.' Justin French Mididress, Gucci. Bracelet, ring, Van Cleef & Arpels. Mirren has also helped McGregor confront challenges of her own: 'In my personal life, and I think Mirren is the same way, I will always be able to be happy for others and in front of others, but hold a lot of emotion and deep feeling,' she says. 'Something that I have to work on daily is this idea of perfection, and having to make sure that you are perfect for everyone at all times.' One of the many things she loves about acting? It lets her see more of herself. Carey Mulligan in talks for key role in Greta Gerwig's Narnia movie
Carey Mulligan is in negotiations to join Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' movie. The 39-year-old actress is currently in talks to portray the ill mother of Digory Kirke, one of the two child protagonists in the fantasy tale, The Hollywood Reporter has said. If she signs on to the movie, Mulligan will be joining a star-studded cast for Netflix's 'Narnia' film, which could include Meryl Streep as lion Aslan the Great, Daniel Craig as Digory's uncle and Emma Mackey as Jadis the White Witch. Although Craig has been attached to the role of Digory's uncle, The Hollywood Reporter has said conversations are at a 'super early' stage, and the former 'James Bond' actor has not officially signed on yet. Meanwhile, Mackey reportedly bested Charli xcx and Margaret Qualley for the role of the White Witch, both of whom had also been in contention for the part. While 'Narnia' has attracted plenty of A-list talent, Netflix are currently searching for young actors to portray Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer. The 'Narnia' movie will reportedly be an adaptation of author C.S. Lewis' 1955 novel 'The Magician's Nephew', which follows two children who stumble into strange worlds through magical rings and witness the creation of Narnia. Along the way, they awaken an evil queen and must grapple with choices that shape entire realms. As well as directing the movie, Gerwig, 41, is also set to write the screenplay. Meanwhile, Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal and Vincent Sieber are to produce the picture. In 2018, Netflix announced it would be making a new movie adaptation of Lewis' fantasy series of the same name, and signed Gerwig to direct the project two years later. While updates on the 'Narnia' flick have been slow since then, it was recently reported that Gerwig had successfully convinced Netflix to give her film an extended run on IMAX screens globally on Thanksgiving Day 2026 (26.11.26) ahead of its release to Netflix on Christmas Day (25.12.26). As well as an adaptation of 'The Magician's Nephew', Gerwig is also set to write and direct another project based on the fantasy series. In a profile in The New Yorker, the 'Barbie' filmmaker said: 'It would have to be something that has some strange hook in me, that feels like it goes to the marrow.' After it was confirmed Gerwig would be helming 'Narnia', the director said she had a reverence for the series, and wanted to treat Lewis' work with care. Speaking on BBC Radio 4, she said: 'I'm slightly in the place of terror because I really do have such reverence for 'Narnia'. 'I loved 'Narnia' so much as a child, [and] as an adult, C.S. Lewis as a thinker and a writer. I'm intimidated by doing this. It's something that feels like a worthy thing to be intimidated by. 'As a non-British person, I feel a particular sense of wanting to do it correctly … it's like when Americans do Shakespeare, there's a slight feeling of reverence and as if maybe we should treat it with extra care. It is not our countryman.'
