JOHANNESBURG - The office of the Gauteng Premier has received an additional R50 million in funding, earmarked for the second phase of the Nasi Ispani programme. This time around, the province is relaunching the initiative with a stronger focus on skills development and training for youth. When asked whether the province has the financial backbone to fund the programme, Finance MEC Lebogang Maile responded with a confident 'yes'. "In the 2025/2026 financial year, the office of the premier will receive an additional R50 million to fund Nas'ispani, a skills development initiative spearheaded by the Gauteng City Region Academy. Unemployment remains our biggest challenge, as evidenced by the latest data showing that Gauteng's unemployment rate increased to 34.7%." The funds for the programme come from the R1.8 billion that was not spent in the previous financial year.

DA slams revival of Nasi ispani jobs scheme
KLIPTOWN - The Democratic Alliance in Gauteng has slammed Premier Panyaza Lesufi for reviving the Nasi Ispani jobs programme. It aims to create fourty-thousand new positions. The party is criticising the move over the abrupt collapse of the programme in March due to budget constraints. It's demanding answers from Social Development MEC Faith Mazibuko about the programme's financing. According to Gauteng Government spokeswoman Vuyo Mhaga, potholes, broken traffic lights, and all road infrastructure and buildings in need of painting are the problems that Johannesburg residents face.

Lesufi announces relaunch of Nasi Ispani, promising 32,000 new jobs
Gauteng is set to relaunch Nasi Ispani in June, creating 32,000 jobs for Assistant Teachers, Premier Panyaza Lesufi announced on Thursday. Speaking at a media briefing in Midrand, Lesufi revealed that the programme will recruit the youth across the province, marking a major boost for youth employment and the education sector. Lesufi said he was undeterred by criticism from opposition parties on the mass recruitment programme. 'The people who are criticising us on Nasi Ispani understand the effectiveness of this programme. We're not doing it for political mileage, we're doing it to fight unemployment. 'But what they're saying now is that you have poor homes, you've got incomplete buildings, traffic lights that have gone down, roads that are not maintained, you've got grass that is not cut. 'On the other side, you've got youth in the townships who are unemployed. So you train them to do the work and pay them,' he said.

Gauteng DA criticises Lesufi on decision to revive Nasi Ispani programme
JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has criticised the province's Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, on his decision to revive the controversial Nasi Ispani programme, which government hopes will create 40,000 jobs in its return. The party's Refiloe Ntsekhe launched an attack against Lesufi at the weekend, pointing to the initiative's collapse in March. ALSO READ: Lesufi announces second instalment of Nasi Ispani programme Thousands of people were left jobless when their temporary Nasi Ispani contracts abruptly ended due to budget constraints. Ntsekhe claimed that the funds were redirected from other Social Development programmes to cover the contracts, further claiming that other vital Social Development projects suffered as a result. She said the party wants the province's MEC for Social Development, Faith Mazibuko, to account for the source of funding in the first round of the initiative launched ahead of 2024's general elections. 'With the questions to MEC Faith Mazibuko, she said in Social Development, they had ended the project on the 31st of March 205, and in the previous questions, recently she indicated that R48 million had been taken from poverty alleviation programmes to fund Nasi Ispani in Social Development.'

The Democratic Alliance (DA) and ActionSA have consistently raised concerns regarding Lesufi's approach since the programme's initial launch in 2023. Lesufi said this was a 'next round of Nasi Ispani.' 'It's a skills training to be welders, to know how to put in tiles, to be plumbers. So we have already done that. We've got 560,000 and 544,000 unemployed people. They want to be trained, either to be welders, plumbers, electricians, all these things.' He added that the relaunch will now go to TVET colleges.
