Queensland secure draw in possible Shield final preview
Queensland face a nervous wait to see whether they will make the Sheffield Shield final after drawing with South Australia in a possible preview of the decider. By the afternoon of day four, it became clear neither side had a realistic chance of victory, leaving South Australia captain Nathan McSweeney and stand-in Queensland skipper Marnus Labuschagne to shake hands. Having reached 7-614 declared in their first innings, South Australia finished at 5-252 in their second dig after bowling Queensland out for 370, but ran out of time to enter their home final in winning form. Having secured the draw they needed to remain in contention, the second-placed Bulls must now hope NSW are unable to chase down a lofty 529 for victory set by Tasmania at the end of day three. Queensland are also relying on Western Australia not winning and snatching their spot, with WA needing 382 runs for victory when their second innings at the crease began on day four. Unless either of WA or NSW win against the odds, Queensland will be back at Karen Rolton Oval next week to face South Australia again. After resuming at 2-66 in their second innings on day four, South Australia put on 186 runs for the loss of three wickets. Jason Sangha brought up a fifth first-class century with an unbeaten 103, reaching triple figures by driving Mitch Swepson over the long off boundary. It's just a six to bring up the hundred ... cool and casual from Jason Sangha 😎 LIVE: — (@cricketcomau) March 18, 2025 It was one of four sixes for the former Sydney Thunder captain, who had slog swept former Test spinner Swepson over long on earlier in the match. Sangha's feats came as high-profile teammates fell around him on day four. After snaring centurion Conor McInerney in the first innings, part-time paceman Labuschagne (2-34) trapped ex-Test teammate Nathan McSweeney (27) to finish as the match's unlikely leading wicket-taker. Labuschagne posted match figures of 4-107. Test wicketkeeper Alex Carey (56) continued his impressive summer with the bat, bringing up his half-century before driving another part-timer in Matt Renshaw to Ben McDermott at cover. Carey, who made 104 in the first innings, has averaged 120.67 across his past four first-class knocks.

McSweeney, Hunt give SA hope of pulling off Shield win
Nathan McSweeney and Henry Hunt have started brightly as South Australia attempt to pull off a formidable fourth-innings chase to secure a home Sheffield Shield final. Victoria remain in a strong position to win the crucial match at the Junction Oval in Melbourne. But in pursuit of 300, SA headed to stumps on day three at 1-47 on a pitch that appears to be growing better for batters the longer the match continues. After top-scoring with 60 in the first innings, McSweeney (13*) looked comfortable at the crease with opener Hunt (31*). Test quick Scott Boland, who took 4-53 in the first innings, dismissed struggling opener Conor McInerney (1) for the second time in the match when he had him caught behind. Boland strikes early courtesy of a Sammy Harper screamer 🔥 #vicsdoitbetter — Victorian Cricket Team (@VicStateCricket) March 8, 2025 It looms as a big Sunday for McSweeney, who is trying to lead SA to their first Shield title in 29 years. But a match-winning innings would also put him firmly in the frame to add to his three Tests ahead of the World Test Championship final and the tour of the West Indies later this year. After being dropped prior to the Boxing Day Test, McSweeney was included in Australia's squad for the tour of Sri Lanka but didn't play a game. Having a first-innings lead of two, Victoria posted 297 in their second dig, led by youngsters Campbell Kellaway (77) and Harry Dixon (76). Kellaway had opportunities in this match to make his second first-class century, having also top-scored in Victoria's first innings with 79. Liam Scott was the pick of SA's bowlers, finishing with 4-49 after going wicketless in the first innings. Victoria sit fourth on the table with two games to play, but are close enough to leapfrog NSW and WA into second.
