Washington police Sgt. graduates from FBI academy

WASHINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A Sergeant with the Washington Police Department has graduated from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's National Academy. Det. Sgt. Steven C. Smith graduated from the program on June 5 and is only the third officer in the department's history to complete the program. Less than one percent of officers are able to even attend the program, said Chief Jeff Stevens. The program is 10 weeks of 'advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training,' Stevens said. This was the 294th graduating class from the program, which had 239 people graduate from 48 states and Washington, D.C., he said. '[Smith is] the one-percenter. Steve has limitless drive, whether it's pursuit of leads in a case or better procedures internally, he is always looking to improve both himself and the Department's service to the community,' Stevens said. Smith started in law enforcement in 2003 when he began as a patrol officer for the Greenville Police Department in South Carolina. He left Greenville in 2008 when he joined the Washington department and was later promoted to Det. Sgt., which is the title he currently holds, he said. Since 2016 Smith has been assigned as a Task Force Officer with the Homeland Security Investigations and has even served on the Illinois Attorney General's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, Stevens said. He also said Smith has received several honors with the department, including Police Officer of the Year in 2011, two Meritorious Service Medals, and more than 25 departmental recognitions in his 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Lloyd Tennant appointed as Ireland women's team head coach

Dublin [Ireland], : Cricket Ireland announced Lloyd Tennant as Ireland Women's team head coach on Friday. Tennant will begin his tenure on June 1, replacing Ed Joyce, who announced that he would leave the role after nearly six years in February. Joyce's last assignment was last month's ICC Women's World Cup Qualifier. In the tournament, Ireland failed to secure a place at the ICC ODI World Cup, which is set to be held in India later this year. Tennant is an ECB Level 4 qualified cricket coach with over 30 years of experience in coaching and developing international, regional and first-class cricketers and teams. He is also the former head coach of Central Sparks, a position he held for four years. The 57-year-old has significant experience in women's cricket as assistant coach for the ECB Female Academy and 'A' Team, assistant coach for Manchester Originals Female Team, and as ECB Women and Girls' talent manager for two years. In addition, he has extensive coaching experience, having worked across the Male High Performance Pathway at Leicestershire CCC for over 20 years and serving as the bowling coach for the ECB Male Under-19 programme. "I'm very excited about this new role - it's such a great time to be involved in women's cricket, given its rapid development around the world. This Ireland Women's squad has moved forward enormously under the guidance of Ed Joyce, and I would like to continue his great work, supporting this squad as it continues to grow. To be honest, I can't wait to get started," Tennant said in a statement released by Cricket Ireland. Graeme West, Cricket Ireland's Director of High Performance, believes Tennant is the perfect fit for the national squad that has an abundance of young talent. "We are delighted to have secured the services of Lloyd Tennant as our new National Women's Head Coach. Lloyd's vast experience coaching across male and female High Performance Pathways in the UK made him an outstanding candidate. He brings an abundance of expertise and knowledge, with the additional capacity to educate, that I am confident will advance the players and staff he leads," West said. "We believe Lloyd is the perfect fit for the current national squad that has an abundance of young talent. His additional experience with the ECB taking players through Under-19 World Cup cycles and National Academy programmes has provided Lloyd with a thorough understanding of the challenges of managing and developing players who are balancing educational commitments with the demands of being an elite athlete," he added. Tennant's first assignment will be the Ireland women's team home series against Zimbabwe, which will feature three T20IS and two ODIS towards the end of July. The white-ball series will be followed by three T20Is at home against Pakistan in August.

Saim Ayub returns to Lahore, HBL PSL participation remains unclear

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has taken a significant step in his recovery as he prepares to undergo a crucial fitness test at the National Academy in Lahore. His participation in the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) remains subject to medical clearance. According to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sources, Ayub has successfully completed his rehabilitation following an ankle fracture sustained during the Cape Town Test against South Africa in January. The injury, suffered while fielding, was later diagnosed as a fracture, leading to his treatment in London under PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi's arrangements. After spending over two months in recovery, Ayub has now returned to Pakistan, with PCB officials confirming that his latest medical reports from the UK are encouraging. The board's medical panel will assess his condition and prepare guidelines based on his recovery progress. Ayub is expected to celebrate Eid with his family in Karachi, but his PSL participation will only be confirmed after the fitness test in Lahore. His availability could be a crucial boost for Peshawar Zalmi, depending on his medical clearance.

Emma Raducanu handed potential round-two clash with Coco Gauff in Indian Wells

Emma Raducanu has been handed a potential second-round clash with Coco Gauff as she prepares to return to action in Indian Wells. The BNP Paribas Open, which begins on Wednesday, will be the 22-year-old's first tournament since her ordeal with a 'fixated' man in Dubai last month. Raducanu was left cowering in tears on court during her second-round match against Karolina Muchova after spotting the man in the crowd. The former US Open champion opted not to press charges after the man was detained but he has been banned from future tournaments. Raducanu's first challenge in California will be to get past Japan's Moyuka Uchijima, who is ranked three places above her at 52 in the world. The winner of that contest is guaranteed to face third seed Coco Gauff, with the top 32 players all receiving byes through to the second round. Raducanu and Gauff have met once before, with the American winning a tight contest in the second round of the Australian Open two years ago. Gauff began the season as arguably the most in-form player on the WTA Tour but goes into Indian Wells on a three-match losing streak after being knocked out of the Australian Open in the quarter-finals by Paula Badosa and then losing her opening matches in Doha and Dubai. Raducanu, meanwhile, ended a four-match losing run, the longest of her career, by beating Maria Sakkari in the opening round in Dubai. Raducanu's search for a new full-time coach goes on and she will be supported in Indian Wells by her fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura and Tom Welsh, who works at the Lawn Tennis Association's National Academy in Loughborough. Indian Wells is one of the biggest events outside the grand slams and will see all of Britain's leading players in action. Jack Draper and Katie Boulter are both seeded and have first-round byes, while debutant Jacob Fearnley will face his old junior rival Draper if he can get past Brazilian teen star Joao Fonseca. Former champion Cameron Norrie takes on Italy's Luca Nardi.
