Asia-Pacific countries keen to learn from Malaysia's JENDELA, 5G rollout

TOKYO: Several Asia-Pacific nations have shown keen interest in Malaysia's experience with the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) and the rollout of its 5G network, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He said bilateral meetings with representatives from several countries in the region, held on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) 2025 here, also discussed efforts to combat scams and cybercrime. 'I see many opportunities for Malaysia to forge closer ties with countries in the region, including within the Asia-Pacific, and to adopt successful strategies they have implemented. 'At the same time, they can learn from Malaysia's experience, particularly in improving infrastructure through the JENDELA programme and 5G deployment,' he told Bernama here today. Earlier, Fahmi held bilateral discussions with Fiji's Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Seru Nakausabaria Kamikamica, as well as Iran's Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Dr Seyed Sattar Hashemi. Fahmi is leading the Malaysian delegation to APT-MM 2025, which aims to strengthen regional cooperation in telecommunications and information technology. He said Malaysia recognises Fiji's important role in developing digital infrastructure among Pacific Island nations and welcomes the opportunity to enhance bilateral cooperation. 'Fiji's digital transformation initiatives are also very progressive, including the implementation of online birth registration, improvements to business processes, and innovations such as the M-PAiSA Mastercard. 'Malaysia also appreciates the active contribution of the Islamic Republic of Iran in APT. Both countries are committed to exploring closer collaboration in the field of information and communications technology,' he said. Themed 'Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific', this year's APT-MM was attended by 31 member states together with 19 affiliate members comprising Asia Pacific's government agencies, regulators and private entities.

Rural women entrepreneurs at the heart of training

CYBERJAYA: The Communications Ministry is targeting the participation of 7,000 rural entrepreneurs, particularly women, through the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi). Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative aims to empower more online entrepreneurs by equipping them with the necessary skills to expand their businesses through e-commerce. 'Our target this year is to reach 7,000 participants, with the goal of equipping more online entrepreneurs with the skills to grow their businesses using e-commerce platforms. 'This is a key initiative under Nadi aimed at supporting local economic development and empowering communities,' he said. Fahmi noted that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), through Nadi, continues to enhance digital literacy and support rural entrepreneurs. As of March, 4,000 entrepreneurs have been trained under the programme, of which more than 3,390, or approximately 85%, are women. 'They use fast Internet not just to improve their skills but also to reach new markets. 'In some cases, I found that they were producing products for international markets. Some even earn more than politicians,' Fahmi said at an event held in conjunction with Girls in ICT Day (GICT) and the 160th anniversary of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) yesterday. Fahmi also stressed the importance of online safety, saying that as the ministry embraces technological advancement, it must remain vigilant about digital security. 'Building a secure and responsible tech-driven environment is crucial to helping all Malaysians thrive in today's connected world. 'This is where MCMC plays its part – by fostering a safer, more resilient digital ecosystem through efforts such as combating cyber threats, protecting personal data, and educating users, particularly vulnerable groups,' he said. Fahmi also highlighted Malaysia's achievements under the National Digital Network Plan (Jendela), saying it has been pivotal to the nation's progress in connectivity. 'To date, over 9.03 million premises have access to high-speed Internet and fibre connectivity, exceeding our original target of nine million by 2025. 'As a result, mobile broadband speed has reached a median of 105.36 Mbps, and Internet coverage in populated areas rose to 98.66% in Q4 2024, moving steadily towards full coverage by 2025,' he said. Fahmi added that with the successful rollout of 5G, coverage as of April 30 stands at 82.4% in populated areas, with a mobile penetration rate of 61%. 'Connectivity is now unlocking access to knowledge, opportunities and new experiences, not just in education but across industries as we work towards progress in multiple areas,' he said. The event, organised by the ministry through MCMC, is held annually on May 17. World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) aims to raise awareness of the transformative role of information and communications technology (ICT) in global development with a focus on building a more inclusive and digitally connected society. Held alongside WTISD, the GICT initiative focuses on empowering women and girls to pursue careers and leadership roles in the tech sector. This year's programme, themed 'Gender Equality in Digital Transformation', brought together policymakers, industry players and youth leaders to explore how digital innovation can advance inclusion, gender equity and sustainability. In celebration of the ITU's 160th anniversary, a commemorative stamp was also unveiled. Also present at the event were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, MCMC executive chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din and Kishore Babu Yerraballa, ITU area representative for South-East Asia and other member states in Asia and the Pacific.

99.90 % internet coverage in Negeri Sembilan as of Jan 31, State Assembly told

SEREMBAN: The internet and communications coverage in populated areas of Negeri Sembilan has reached 99.90 per cent as of Jan 31 this year, the State Assembly was told today. State Heritage, Technology, Innovation and Digital Action Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Faizal Ramli said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is actively implementing the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA) to expand connectivity and improve telecommunications infrastructure, including in the Lenggeng and Nilai areas. 'Through JENDELA's implementation in Lenggeng, four out of five new telecommunications towers have been completed, with one more planned to enhance coverage in the Kampung Orang Asli (KOA) area of Lumut, Lenggeng. 'In addition, 43 out of 45 existing transmitter stations have been upgraded. For fibre optic services, 9,009 out of 9,108 premises have been equipped with gigabit-capable fibre optic connectivity,' he said. Mohd Faizal (BN-Linggi) was responding to a question from Datuk Mohd Asna Amin (BN-Lenggeng), who raised concerns about weak internet access in Kampung Sungai Jai, Kampung Rawa, and Kampung Tengah in Lenggeng, and asked what measures would be taken to improve infrastructure quality in those areas. Mohd Faizal said the remaining initiatives currently being implemented are expected to be completed in stages by the end of this year. Meanwhile, on the issue of stray dogs in the state, Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the animals posed a security concern for residents in Muslim-majority areas and proposed that they be culled. 'To address this problem, I suggest that the disposal involve only stray dogs in Muslim-majority areas, and I hope that animal welfare non-governmental organisations (NGOs) can understand the issue affecting the Muslim community. 'I also hope that the members of this assembly will agree to this proposal, as the stray dog population is too large and needs to be controlled,' he said. He was responding to a question from Dr G. Rajasekaran (PH-Sri Tanjung), regarding the state government's efforts to manage the stray dog problem. Aminuddin's proposal received support from both government and opposition assembly members, with Yew Boon Lye (PH-Chuah) interjecting, saying that the stray dogs also affect public safety. Suhaimizan Bizar (BN-Gemencheh) also interjected, saying that his office also received complaints from the Chinese community about being harassed by stray dogs while jogging in public parks.
