NEET-UG held in 22 Ranchi centres amid tight vigil

Ranchi: The (NTA) conducted the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET UG) 2025 on Sunday across 22 designated centres in the district. The examination was held from 2 pm to 5 pm under strict security arrangements, with prohibitory orders in place to ensure a smooth and transparent process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To prevent disturbances near exam venues, the district administration had imposed Section 163 of the Indian Justice Code from 11 am to 8 pm. The orders prohibite gatherings of five or more persons, the use of loudspeakers, public meetings, and the possession of any weapons including firearms and sharp objects within a 200-meter radius of the exam centres. The authorities deployed a sufficient number of magistrates, senior police officials, and security personnel to maintain order throughout the examination period. Students were allowed entry only after undergoing mandatory frisking and metal detector checks. Prohibited items included mobile phones, calculators, wallets, books, stationery items, sunglasses, and even water bottles. Strict compliance with these rules was ensured at every centre. "It was a strict but fair environment. I was a little nervous at first seeing all the security, but once inside, everything was well-managed. The invigilators guided us properly, and I was able to focus on my paper without any distraction," said Sneha Kumari. Another candidate Ritwik Anand, said, "There were clear instructions about what not to bring. I appreciate the way the authorities handled everything. It made me feel that our efforts are being protected from any unfair practices." The admit cards contained complete details regarding the examination centres. Students were also instructed to ensure that the number of pages in their question booklet matched the count printed on the cover page.

NEET 2025: Barricades, policemen, multiple checks — aspirants point to heightened security inside exam centres

At 2 pm on a sweltering Sunday afternoon, the gate of a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Dwarka Sector 6 shut behind hundreds of NEET UG aspirants. Outside, parents stood under the shade of makeshift tents, sweat pouring down their faces, eyes fixed on the locked gate. Inside, Sheetal Pal, 20, was undergoing her second round of security checks — her admit card was checked, biometrics scanned, Aadhaar verified, pockets turned out, and sleeves scrutinised. 'They checked my documents twice and frisked me too,' she said, stepping out three hours later, her face flushed from both heat and nerves. 'Last time, the security wasn't as tight as this year,' said Pal, a student at Delhi University's Kirori Mal College who was giving her second attempt at NEET this year. This year's NEET UG (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate) exam — the only gateway to India's undergraduate medical programmes — was conducted across 5,453 centres in India and 13 cities abroad, with 22.7 lakh students appearing for it. The paper was held in a single shift from 2 pm to 5 pm in pen-and-paper mode, as in previous years. But the most notable feature of this year's exam was not the number of aspirants — it was the heightened security presence. This comes in the backdrop of the scandal that rocked NEET UG 2024, when a question paper leak surfaced hours before the exam in at least two states. Multiple arrests were made, including coaching centre operators and middlemen who allegedly charged lakhs of rupees to share leaked content. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) later took over the probe. The incident triggered widespread outrage, protests, and legal challenges. It also raised serious questions about the credibility of one of the country's most competitive examinations and prompted a nationwide review of exam protocol. Determined to restore trust, the National Testing Agency (NTA), which administers the exam, vowed stricter controls this year. 'All preparations and logistical arrangements for organising a safe and secure examination have been made,' the NTA said in a May 3 statement. It added that mock drills had already been conducted, and it warned candidates to 'exercise caution against rumours and misleading information.' The agency also said it had taken action against over 165 Telegram channels and 32 Instagram accounts spreading misinformation about the exam. At several centres in Dwarka, barricades had been set up outside the school, and lists of roll numbers were pasted on the gates, directing candidates where to go. Police personnel stood in clusters, some near the school compound. When the gates finally reopened at 5 pm, emotions erupted — some students hugged their parents with smiles, others wiped tears. But every single one remarked on the level of scrutiny they had undergone. Teena Kundara, 17, a student of the School of Specialised Excellence in Dwarka Sector 10, described how her Aadhaar card was checked twice — once at the gate, and again before entering the classroom. 'The exam started and ended on time. The paper was a bit lengthy, but otherwise everything went smoothly. They let me in despite some metal chains on my pants, so they weren't unnecessarily harsh,' she said. Nama Fatima, also 17, from Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Mayur Vihar, had her own checklist to clear. 'We weren't allowed to wear full sleeves, so I came in a pastel colored half-sleeve kurta with a dupatta. We were told to tie our hair. There were police constables even inside the school building,' she said, describing the environment as 'tense but organised'. At another centre in Janakpuri, a 19-year-old student, who requested anonymity, said, 'The moment I reached, there were barricades and a crowd of uniformed officers. They scanned my ID, my pen — even my socks.' In fact, videos from centres across several states surfaced on social media showing students having buttons removed from their shirts as part of the protocol — but also capturing police officers assisting by arranging alternate clothing or helping students change into compliant outfits. The NTA said in its statement that authorities would monitor coaching centres and online platforms 'to prevent organised cheating networks,' and that question papers and OMR sheets would be transported under full police protection to prevent tampering or leaks. With competition soaring — NEET UG registrations have crossed 20 lakh for the third consecutive year, peaking at 24.06 lakh in 2024 — the NTA also reminded students and parents not to fall prey to fraudsters. 'Unscrupulous elements attempting to exploit students by falsely promising medical seats… fall under the ambit of the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act,' the agency said, warning of strict penalties for malpractice. As Pal stood quietly beside her parents — her mother a housewife, her father a private sector employee — she said this was her second attempt and perhaps her last. 'I've wanted to be a doctor since Grade 9. I just hope everything I studied comes together today,' she whispered with a smile. And like her, over 22 lakh students across the country stood at that same threshold of hope, exhaustion, and anticipation in a system that, this year, they believed, tried to leave no room for compromise.
