NADI Pulau Banggi boosts rural internet access and digital skills

KOTA KINABALU: The National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in Pulau Banggi is transforming rural communities by providing essential internet access and digital training. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that the centre also offers facilities to support economic growth and digital entrepreneurship. 'Starlink technology at NADI Pulau Banggi delivers high-speed internet, with minimum speeds exceeding 100Mbps,' MCMC confirmed in a statement. The initiative, part of the NADI Malaysia Digital Inclusive Project, recently won the WSIS Prizes 2025 in the Capacity Building category. This award highlights the government's dedication to inclusive digitalisation, ensuring no community is left behind. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil visited the centre to assess progress and engage with local residents. He reviewed telecommunications improvements in Kudat, noting advancements in network coverage for Sabah's rural areas. The visit reinforced the government's focus on expanding digital access to drive socio-economic development. Pulau Banggi, home to 20,000 people, relies on fisheries, oil palm, and rubber as key economic activities. Accessible only by ferry or speedboat, the island lies 70 kilometres from Kudat. Kudat itself is located 180 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu, requiring a three-hour road journey. - Bernama

Sarawak's health autonomy to be discussed between ministers this Monday

KUCHING:The outstanding matters in Sarawak's push for autonomy in health administration will again be discussed in a meeting between Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad this Monday. Dr Sim, after opening the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) in his constituency of Batu Kawa in the outskirts of the city here today, said pertinent issues like the delay in the completion of the cancer hospital in Samarahan, shortage of medical officers, transfers of Sarawakian medical staff back from the peninsula and administrative powers would be discussed. Dr Sim, who is also the state housing and public health minister, said this would be his second meeting with Dzulkefly on Sarawak's health autonomy roadmap. The first meeting was held in April. He said the issues agreed upon will be brought to the Technical Committee on MA63, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, on Aug 18 for further discussion. He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim would then chair the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) Implementation Action Council on Sept 12 and announce the issues that were resolved. Dr Sim said funding is a challenge in Sarawak's health autonomy push. Citing the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in Australia, which is roughly the same size as Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here, Dr Sim said the Brisbane hospital has an annual budget of RM5 billion whereas SGH has RM750 million only. Dr Sim said Sarawak will push for the Australian model where healthcare is under the state with its own health director-general, but funding is from the federal government. On his recent fact-finding tour of the healthcare system in Australia, Dr Sim said Western Australia's Healthcare Command Centre should be studied as it was set up to manage the healthcare of a large area with a sparse, scattered population just like in Sarawak. He said the Healthcare Command Centre there provided special support – nursing, ambulance services and coordination of rural hospitals.

Nadi helps rural entrepreneurs embrace digital shift

KANGAR: From workshops to digital platforms, and local customers to royal orders — this is the transformation experienced by small and medium enterprise (SME) entrepreneurs in Perlis, who are now stepping confidently into the digital business world, thanks to guidance from the National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi). Most entrepreneurs expressed happiness and satisfaction that their participation in various training sessions and guidance programmes on digital marketing provided by Nadi has begun to yield positive results. For wood carving entrepreneur Hamizah Hassan, 36, who rents a workshop at the Perlis branch of Kraftangan Malaysia in Kuala Perlis, the idea of using social media platforms to market her products initially seemed daunting. She was far more comfortable selling her creations through conventional, face-to-face methods. "From 2013 to 2017, I usually sold my wood carvings physically and in person, from one customer to another. However, in 2018, I began selling online after joining a digital marketing course conducted by an e-commerce platform. "I focused on selling through that platform for only six months because I couldn't manage the overwhelming demand at the time. "After that, I felt more comfortable marketing and promoting my carvings through my Facebook page, 'Embun Warisan Kayu'," she said. Hamizah, who holds a Diploma in Wood Craft Arts, added that the knowledge and skills in online product promotion she gained through the e-commerce platform continue to be applied today, significantly boosting her sales. Still operating from the same workshop, Hamizah now serves customers from across Malaysia, and most notably, her hand-carved pieces have also been commissioned by the Royal Family of Perlis. Meanwhile, printing and graphic design entrepreneur Nurhazirah Hussin, 34, from Felda Chuping near Padang Besar, said courses provided by Nadi Felda Chuping have greatly boosted her confidence and skills in using online platforms to sell her products. She first learned about Nadi's services in late 2023 before actively participating in its courses and entrepreneurial guidance programmes the following year. These included training in photography and financial management. "Through this photography course, I learned techniques for taking photos and videos of products, as well as how to edit them before uploading them on social media platforms," she said "Through the photography course, I learned techniques for taking and editing photos and videos of my products before uploading them on social media," said Nurhazirah, who started her business in 2018. She added that Nadi also provided guidance on more effective digital marketing techniques through various e-commerce channels, which has helped her earn a more lucrative income. Nurhazirah said her products remain in high demand from both new and returning customers, particularly during the annual Teacher's Day celebration. "For me, Nadi's services are excellent. Besides offering entrepreneurial courses, they also provide networking opportunities with other entrepreneurs, allowing us to exchange ideas and experiences. "I hope Nadi can serve as a checkpoint for entrepreneurs, a place to renew their drive, gain knowledge, and refine their business direction," she said, adding that she had previously worked as a clinical assistant at a private hospital in Ipoh for seven years before resigning in 2017. Nadi is an initiative implemented by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) under the Universal Service Provision (USP). Its objectives include providing collective internet access to communities, especially in rural areas and from areas with less service coverage, as well as empowering communities through more sustainable and relevant programmes to bridge the digital, knowledge and socio-economic gaps

Virtual briefing to be held with Madani community and Nadi reps on 13MP tonight, says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Immediate action will be taken to ensure that the aspirations of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) are made understandable to the rakyat, said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister announced that a special virtual briefing session on the 13MP will be held on Thursday (July 31) night with all Madani community and National Information Dissemination Centre (Nadi) hub representatives. "The briefing session will be held simultaneously with 1,838 Madani communities and 1,099 Nadi managers to ensure that the efforts of the Madani Government through the 13MP are understood by movers at the grassroots level," he told reporters at a press conference in Parliament on Thursday (July 31). Fahmi emphasised that it is crucial for the aspirations under the 13MP to be explained to the people in layman's terms for full comprehension. "The explanation should be simple and not the language used in Putrajaya so that it can be clearly explained to all communities," he said. Earlier, Fahmi highlighted that one of the goals of the 13MP is to widen internet coverage nationwide while making it more affordable for the rakyat. "But what is important is that it is made safer, particularly for our children and families," he added. Besides establishing MyDigital as the sole digital identity log-on for Malaysians, Fahmi also mentioned efforts to introduce a digital identity for businesses to ensure safe access for global payments and marketability. "This comes after we received feedback from various quarters, including civil society organisations and non-governmental organisations, stressing that the internet, particularly social media, is made safer and is not abused by criminals to victimise children," he added. He also stated that the 13MP will help position the nation as a global leader in AI, with an emphasis on the development of the nation's creative economy. Fahmi noted that more than 40 policies and action plans, with over 85 laws, are included as part of the 13MP to cover all aspects of development for the country over the next five years. "The 13MP makes the effort to cover all dimensions, which includes ensuring a sustainable economy and wellbeing of the rakyat, including environmental sustainability and good governance," he said.
