NIA to probe ex-Bajrang Dal leader's murder in Karnataka
The Centre has handed over the probe into the murder of former Bajrang Dal member Suhas Shetty in Karnataka last month to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), officials aware of the matter said on Sunday. The ministry of home affairs (MHA), in its notification dated June 7, ordered the central agency to investigate the case, citing implications on national security and the need to uncover a larger conspiracy. 'The Central Government is of the opinion that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed... and it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008,' the notification said. According to police, Suhas was travelling with five of his associates near Kinnikambla in Bajpe area of Mangaluru on the night of May 1 when their vehicle was intercepted by five-six assailants, who then dragged the 30-year-old out of the vehicle and hacked him to death. The incident triggered communal tensions in the region, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). So far, twelve people have been arrested in connection with Shetty's murder. The Centre's decision comes a month after the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Karnataka demanded an NIA inquiry into the incident, with the party accusing the Congress-led state government of 'going soft' on the issue. 'Why is the Congress government unwilling to hand over the case to the NIA? What are they afraid of?' BJP lawmaker Captain Brijesh Chowta said on May 5, after the Congress dismissed the murder as a case of personal rivalry. When asked about NIA taking over the probe, chief minister Siddaramaiah, on Sunday, said, 'I have asked DG and IGP MA Saleem to seek legal advice from the advocate general.' In its notification, the MHA said that the murder appeared to be a targeted killing carried out in public to create fear, allegedly by members of the now-banned Popular Front of India (PFI). 'In this case, sections 10 r/w 41, 13, 15, 17, 18 & 20 of UA(P) Act, 1967 are attracted, as it is related to targeted killing of an individual in public view with the intention to create terror in the minds of people and the accused persons involved in the case are allegedly members of Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful association,' the order read.

NIA probe ordered into rowdy-sheeter Suhas Shetty's murder
MANGALURU: The Union government has ordered a probe by National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the murder of rowdy-sheeter and Hindutva activist Suhas Shetty. The development is seen as a setback to the Congress government in Karnataka which had refused to hand over the case to NIA stating that police are competent enough to investigate it. An order from Ministry of Home Affairs said the Central Government opines that a Scheduled Offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, has been committed in the instant case. It added that with regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it is required to be investigated by the National Investigation Agency in accordance with the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008. 'Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the Central Government hereby directs the National Investigation Agency to take up investigation of the aforesaid case,' said the order. Suhas Shetty, an accused in two murders, was travelling in a car when he was hacked to death by a gang of persons in Bajpe Police Station limits near Mangaluru city on May 1.

Centre hands over probe into Suhas Shetty murder to NIA
The Union Home Ministry on Saturday, June 7, handed over the investigation into the murder of 30-year-old Suhas Shetty, a Hindutva activist and accused in two murder cases, to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), considering the 'the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy'. It said, 'The Central government has received information regarding registration of FIR no. 0080/2025 dated 01.05.2025 by the Karnataka police at Bajpe police station in Mangaluru city, Karnataka, under sections 189(4), 191(2), 191(3), 126(2), 109, 118(1), 103(1), 61(1), 62, 351(2), 351(3), 190 of the BNS, 2023, and sections 3(1), 25 of the Arms Act, 1959, pertaining to attack on one Suhas Shetty on 01.05.2025 while he was travelling in a car along with a few others, by one Safwan with eight other persons, and the attack resulted in critical injuries to Suhas Shetty and others, and he subsequently succumbed to them in a hospital.' In this case, the Ministry said, sections 10 read with 41, 13, 15, 17, 18, and 20 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, dealing with unlawful associations and terrorist activities, were attracted. The case relates to the targeted killing of an individual in public view with the intention to create terror in the minds of people, and the accused persons involved in the case were allegedly members of the Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful association. In view of the circumstances mentioned, the Central government was of the opinion that a scheduled offence under the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, had been committed in the instant case and having regard to the gravity of the offence, its national ramifications as well as the need to unearth the larger conspiracy, it was required to be investigated by the NIA. The Ministry directed the NIA to take up the investigation into the case in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (5) of section 6 read with section 8 of the NIA Act. On the night of May 1, Shetty, who was travelling along with his associates, was chased and hacked to death in full public view by a group of people in Bajpe town. The victim was the main accused in the murder of 23-year-old Mohammed Fazil, a resident of Katipalla-Surathkal, who was killed in front of a shop in Surathkal on July 28, 2022. Fazil was murdered two days after the killing of BJP activist Praveen Nettaru at Bellare in Sullia taluk on July 26, 2022. The Bajpe police have so far arrested 11 persons in the Shetty murder case.

Churachandpur sessions court to be special NIA court: MHA
The government has designated a sessions court in Churachandpur district of Manipur as a special NIA court, the ministry of home affairs said in a notification issued on Thursday night. 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 11 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008), the Central government, in consultation with the chief justice of the High Court of Manipur hereby designates the court of district and sessions judge, Churachandpur district, as the special court for the purpose of Sub-section (I) of Section 11 of the said Act, for the trial of the scheduled offences investigated by the National Investigation Agency,' the MHA notification said. The jurisdiction of the special court shall extend throughout Manipur. Over two years of ethnic clashes, Meitei and Kuki-Zo tribals have retreated to their respective strongholds. Meities are in the valley districts such as Imphal and Bishnupur, while Kuki-Zo people are in hills districts such as Churachandpur and Kangpokpi. The NIA, a federal agency, is currently probing at least 16 cases related to the Manipur violence.

Govt forms spl NIA court in Manipur for cases related to ethnic violence
A sessions court in Manipur's Churachandpur has been designated as a special NIA court for the trial of cases related to ethnic violence being investigated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). In a notification on Thursday, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said the court of district and sessions judge, Churachandpur district, has been designated as a special court under Section 11 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008). "In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 11 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008 (34 of 2008), the Central government, in consultation with the chief justice of the High Court of Manipur hereby designates the court of district and sessions judge, Churachandpur district, as the special court for the purpose of Sub-section (I) of Section 11 of the said Act, for the trial of the scheduled offences investigated by the National Investigation Agency," the notification said. The jurisdiction of the special court shall extend throughout Manipur. The NIA has taken over three key cases related to ethnic violence that began on May 3, 2023. These cases include the abduction and killing of six women and children in Jiribam, as well as other violent incidents. The NIA registered these cases in November 2024 after the MHA decided to hand them over to the agency for probe due to the severity of the crimes and the escalating violence in Manipur. Manipur witnessed violence for several months since May 3, 2023. It started after Kuki-Zo tribals living in the hill districts protested over a high court recommendation for granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to Meiteis. At least 260 people were killed and thousands rendered homeless in the ethnic violence between Imphal valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kuki-Zo groups. Manipur is currently under the President's Rule, which was imposed on February 13 after the then chief minister N Biren Singh resigned on February 9. The state assembly, which has tenure till 2027, has been put under suspended animation. After the imposition of the President's Rule, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla took a number of steps to restore peace and bring back normalcy. There were also efforts from the central government to open the state's roads for normal traffic. However, it did not fructify due to various reasons.
