Moody Co. Chief Deputy honored in Washington D.C.
FLANDREAU, S.D. (KELO) — Law enforcement in Moody County continues to honor one of their own. In February 2024, Chief Deputy Sheriff Ken Prorok was killed during a pursuit near the I-29 and Colman exit. Authorities say he was struck by a man driving more than 100 miles per hour. Most recently, the Moody County Sheriff's Office flew to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week. Prorok's name was engraved on the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. 'I think it was significant, one, that we were out there as a group. And two, just honoring Ken was a very nice tribute to be able to be out there to do that,' Moody County Sheriff Troy Wellman said. Court docs: Former deputy's alleged abuse spanned 8 years Prorok's family was also in Washington for last week's events. His name is written on Row 13 E, Tier 1 of the National Law Enforcement Memorial. 'Ken was the smart guy,' Moody County Sergeant Thomas Klein said. There are more than 24,000 names on the memorial wall of law enforcement officers who, like Prorok, died in the line of duty. 'Seeing Ken's name on it, it was a moving experience to understand that there's that many names,' Klein said. 'But to see how many people still honored him there was amazing.' The week included a candlelight vigil, a memorial service and support classes for those dealing with loss. 'There were classes that we could go to. They had coworker grief, spouse grief, children grief, different things on how to deal with the issues that come with,' Wellman said. Support from other law enforcement agencies experiencing the same kind of loss was also impactful. 'A big thing law enforcement does is we switch coins and patches together. It's kind of a sign of respect to each other,' Klein said. 'I think I came back with over 80 patches and 60 something coins.' Prorok's D.C. memorial is as permanent as the writing on the wall inside the Moody County Sheriff's Office. Prorok's badge hangs outside of his office, with messages and letters surrounding it. 'As long as I'm here, I don't plan on having that taken down,' Wellman said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 'We endorse this resolution's call for comprehensive measures to ensure the safety and well being of our law enforcement professionals. Our officers deserve the full support of the communities and the nation they so faithfully serve.
