Phillies' Bryce Harper 'Can't Really Function' With Current Wrist Injury

Phillies' Bryce Harper 'Can't Really Function' With Current Wrist Injury originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the Philadelphia Phillies continue their intrastate series with the Pittsburgh Pirates, they'll be without the face of the franchise. Advertisement First baseman Bryce Harper has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Friday, with right wrist inflammation. And according to the slugger, it sounds more severe than any Philly fan would've liked to hear. "It got to the point where I can't really function on a baseball field or hit a baseball," Harper said before Saturday's game. "It's a good time for me to take some time and get it right." Harper largely echoed manager Rob Thomson's thinking with that answer. Thomson said Friday that anything involving the hands or feet is concerning and wouldn't be something the club overlooks. Bryce Harper has made an enormous impact on the Phillies' lineup when healthy. Just like in past seasons, the offense has struggled to score without Ross-Imagn Images Harper went on to confirm that this injury is the same issue he dealt with throughout last season. This time around, it started early and hasn't gone away. Advertisement "(I) felt it early in the season and tried to play through it as long as I could," Harper said. "Just trying to get through it the best I can. It's going to take some time (to heal)." Harper did not offer any timetable on when he could return. The first day he's eligible to do so is Monday, June 16, when the Phillies travel to Miami. Shortly after that, the New York Mets come to Philadelphia for three games from June 20-22. The Phillies would like to get him back for a series that will have major implications for the National League East Division race. Harper is slashing .258/.368/.446 with nine home runs, 13 doubles and 34 RBIs. Prospect Otto Kemp, who made his major league debut Saturday, is holding Harper's spot on the roster for now. Phillies 'Bench Bat' Becomes One of Team's Best Pitchers Amid Season Skid

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies have seen a stark change of fortunes after starting the season as one of the best teams in Major League Baseball. Though it still holds a strong record and sits fewer than five games out of first place in the National League East Division, the team has lost nine of its last 10 games as it free falls from dominance. Suddenly, the rotation is in question as Aaron Nola recovers with injury and Jesus Luzardo struggles with command. And the batting order has suffered considerably with Bryce Harper out. The roster is in such dire straits that utility outfielder Weston Wilson has been forced to take the mound twice in recent games, with better results than many of the team's highly-paid relievers. "Now, Phillies bench bat Weston Wilson has pitched twice in six days," Marcus Hayes wrote for The Philadelphia Inquirer as the team was swept by the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. "He has pitched three innings and allowed no runs and no walks. It can be reasonably argued that, behind Ranger Suarez, Wilson has lately been their most effective pitcher." (Photo by) More Nwachukwu/Getty Though no serious party would earnestly suggest Wilson is a legitimate pitching option for the Phillies, the fact that the team has turned to him so often and that he has, in a sense, performed better than the likes of Luzardo, Jordan Romano and Matt Strahm in those situations is a stark sign of just how thoroughly the roster is struggling. Luckily for Philadelphia, Zack Wheeler is set to return from the paternity list on Monday and there is no doubt he will instantly become the most effective member of the staff. But amid struggles that have impacted the bullpen, offense and rotation, the team should hope it won't need to turn to Wilson on the mound again for the rest of the year.
