Karwar: A couple from Siddapur taluk in Uttara Kannada district has been invited to participate in the upcoming Independence Day programme in New Delhi. Eshwar Naik and his wife Saraswati, of Pragati Stree Shakti Sangha in Hasuvante village, are practitioners of Chittara art. The couple will also meet President Draupadi Murmu. According to Srividya PI, mission director of the National Livelihood Mission, they were given the opportunity due to their participation in Saras Mela events under the Sanjeevini programme, where they showcased their Chittara art. Karwar: A couple from Siddapura taluk in Uttara Kannada district have been selected to take part in the 78th Independence Day celebrations in New Delhi. Saraswati Naik and her husband, Ishwar Naik, members of Pragati Stree Shakti Sangha in Hasuvante village, part of the Manamane Sanjeevini Federation, were selected to participate in the Independence Day celebrations. The selection comes after the couple received financial support from the National Livelihood Mission under the skill development department. A few days ago, officials had extended the official invitation to the couple. According to Srividya PI, mission director of the National Livelihood Mission, the couple got this opportunity due to their active participation in the Saras Mela events under the Sanjeevini programme, where they showcased traditional Chittara art. Ishwar Naik, a Chittara artist, also got a chance to participate in the Republic Day celebrations as well. "This is a proud moment, especially for Saraswati, who represents self-help group members and skilled Chittara artists from Uttara Kannada district," Srividya said. In addition to participating in the prestigious event, senior officials confirmed that the couple will also have the privilege of meeting the President of India, Droupadi Murmu. ‘Apda Sakhiya' to assist in flood relief ops across state

1 2 3 Prayagraj: In an attempt to assist flood relief operations and its elaborate management during monsoon, the state govt has mooted a proposal to appoint 'Apda Sakhiya' (Disaster Friends) across the state. The training of disaster friends will begin in the state capital on Monday, June 9. Flood relief operation and its management are priority of the state govt, especially in those districts, which often witness floods due to the rise in water levels of rivers during monsoon, the govt has decided to promote public participation to minimise the damage caused by floods and natural disasters. The deployment of an adequate number of disaster friends is an effort towards serving the public in times of crisis. The state govt decided to appoint as many as 44 disaster friends in Sangam City. Women associated with self-help groups in the National Livelihood Mission will be given training for the same. In Prayagraj district, apart from the Ganga and Yamuna rivers, floods in more than half a dozen tributary rivers cause economic loss worth lakhs of rupees every year. This loss can be reduced by creating awareness in the areas along the rivers. Women from self-help groups groups, who witness flood-affected areas during monsoon, are being selected for the job. These women are from blocks including Bahadurpur, Karchana, Meja, Bahria, Saidabad, Urwa, Jasra, and Bhagwatpur. In Prayagraj and its surrounding areas, flood conditions occur in the rivers in the last week of June. More than one lakh population of 127 villages of the district situated on the banks of the rivers are affected by this every year. Singh said that these disaster friends will be trained in Lucknow from June 9 to 15 by the Relief Commissioner's Office. They will be trained in pre-disaster warning systems, first aid and relief work, rescue and rehabilitation techniques, and psychological support and counselling. After training, these Disaster Sakhis will work in local communities to provide responde during disasters, assist in relief work, and spread public awareness.
