Jordan: SEPCO generates 30% of Jordan's electricity — minister
AMMAN — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh said on Thursday that the Samra Electric Power Company (SEPCO) provides around 30 per cent of Jordan's electricity needs, making it one of the country's largest and most critical energy providers. During a ceremony organised by the Samra Company in the Hashemiyah area of Zarqa Governorate to celebrate Jordan's 79th Independence Day, Kharabsheh highlighted the Economic Modernisation Vision as a strategic roadmap for the Kingdom, positioning the energy sector as a critical enabler of other industries and a cornerstone of the national economy. He also underscored the importance of addressing current challenges, transforming them into opportunities, and working toward achieving long-term national goals, according to an Energy Ministry statement. Kharabsheh also noted that the government is working to fully meet the Kingdom's natural gas needs from the Risha gas field within the next five years, through the efforts of the National Petroleum Company. Kharabsheh also highlighted the sector's key milestones, noting that SEPCO began commercial operations in 2005 with a single 100-megawatt gas turbine. "Today, its nominal generation capacity has reached 1,241 megawatts, with a projected total capacity of 1,834 megawatts by 2025," he added. He also commended the plant's efficient operation, managed by highly skilled Jordanian professionals, many of whom are residents of Zarqa, underscoring the company's role in supporting local communities and creating employment opportunities. For his part, SEPCO Director General Engineer Sami Zawatineh hailed the company's achievements since its establishment, reporting a nearly twelvefold increase in electricity production. He also noted the broader progress Jordan has made in developing its energy sector, particularly in electricity generation. © Copyright The Jordan Times. All rights reserved. Minister opens national workshop to modernise energy strategy for 2025–2035
By JT - May 07,2025 - Last updated at May 07,2025 Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Wednesday launches the first national workshop to modernise Jordan's Energy Sector Strategy for 2025–2035 (Petra photo) AMMAN — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh on Wednesday launched the first national workshop to modernise Jordan's Energy Sector Strategy for 2025–2035, with broad participation from government ministries, institutions, private sector representatives and local and international partners. In his opening remarks, Kharabsheh said that recent years have brought major shifts in the energy sector, particularly in storage technologies, renewable energy, and green hydrogen, changes that require a revised strategy to keep pace with international developments, according to a ministry statement. He noted that the previous strategy aimed to raise the share of renewable energy to 31 per cent of the total energy mix by 2030, a target now expected to be reached earlier, by 2027–2028, adding that this progress encourages higher future ambitions. Kharabsheh added that the updated strategy will also reflect key new developments, including the discovery of additional natural gas reserves by the National Petroleum Company, which will shape Jordan's energy outlook over the next decade. Underscoring the need for a cooperative approach, he urged public and private sector stakeholders, along with financial institutions, to help develop a comprehensive strategy that reflects the aspirations of all parties, beyond purely technical considerations. The minister stressed that existing challenges in the energy sector will be transformed into tangible opportunities, making the sector a pillar of sustainable economic growth in line with Jordan's Economic Modernisation Vision. He also reiterated that the updated strategy will drive economic expansion, generate employment, increase exports and promote inclusive national development. The strategy update is supported technically by the advisory team of the Green Economy Support Programme in Jordan, which began its work late last year and is providing expert assistance to ensure the development of a scientific, participatory strategy.

Jordan: NPC seeks to drill 145 gas wells, reach 418mcf of daily output by 2030
AMMAN — Director-General of the National Petroleum Company (NPC) Mohammed Khasawneh on Monday said that the company's 2025–2030 strategic plan aims to drill 145 gas wells and reach a total daily gas production of 418 million cubic feet. During a visit by the Lower House's Energy and Mineral Resources Committee to NPC, Khasawneh said that this gas production would contribute to reducing the energy bill across various sectors and support achieving self-sufficiency in natural gas, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. He noted that the company's plan is based on three key tracks: accelerating production by increasing the number of drilling rigs and expanding the gas processing plant; preparing technical and financial studies for the construction of a gas pipeline; and ensuring the availability of a consumer base for the produced gas. The director-general also highlighted the importance of increasing production volumes from the Risha gas field and delivering natural gas to the industrial sector, given its role in reducing energy costs in this vital area. Khasawneh reviewed the 'notable' success achieved at the Risha gas field in recent times, thanks to the efforts of the company's national workforce, referring to the size of the field, the equipment used in the drilling operations, and the contribution of the national staff working for the company. Committee members, headed by MP Haitham Ziadin, were briefed on the current operations of NPC and its efforts in extracting natural gas from the Risha field. Ziadin stressed the importance of exploring the Kingdom's mineral wealth, particularly the Risha gas reserves, as a means of fulfilling the vision of relying on Jordanian gas, which would have a direct impact on boosting the national economy. The lawmaker added that gas exploration at Risha would have a direct impact on various economic sectors, help reduce production costs for the industrial sector, create more jobs, and have a positive effect on citizens. He noted that the Lower House would utilise all available means to support the role of the company in achieving further success in gas extraction, reiterating the importance of joint efforts among relevant entities to explore natural and mineral resources nationwide. Talks during the meeting also addressed the importance of the company's recent tender to drill gas wells at Risha on a lump-sum turnkey basis (LSTK), which includes drilling 80 wells over a three-year period to enhance the efficiency of drilling operations and increase the field's production capacity. © Copyright The Jordan Times. NPC Launches Tender for 80-Well Drilling Project at Risha Gas Field
Ammon News - The National Petroleum Company (NPC) has issued a pre-qualification tender for a Lump Sum Turnkey (LSTK) contract to drill 80 gas wells at the Risha Gas Field over a three-year period. In line with its strategy to ramp up gas production, NPC is inviting experienced contractors to participate in the project, which may be extended based on contractor performance. The undertaking will require three drilling rigs, each with a capacity of 1500 to 2000 horsepower. NPC noted that current revenues are insufficient to fully finance the project. To support the initiative, the government will allocate JD 87 million, while the remaining costs will be covered through gas sales revenues. The tender is designed to enhance drilling efficiency and boost output from the Risha field. Qualified drilling companies are encouraged to apply.
