34 incredible photos of Edinburgh in the swinging 60s taken six decades ago

While most of these great photos show normal Edinburgers going about their business throughout the decade when Britain was cool again thanks to the nation's worldwide success in music and fashion, we also found some great photos of famous faces from the time visiting the Scottish Capital. So as well as locals going enjoying their daily life at work, out swimming, protesting, fuelling up their cars, and trying to get on a bus with a Christmas tree, there are also photos of the Beatles, Cilla Black, the Rolling Stones, David Frost and Frankie Vaughan in Edinburgh. While, there are also a couple of great photos of Hibs embarking on European adventures, including perhaps the most impressive victory of their 150 years. 1 . 20 great photos of former Edinburgh attraction that made a splash in the 90s Leith Waterworld

Leith Waterworld was a leisure pool built on the site of the former Leith Central railway station, which opened in 1992. It was the only pool in Edinburgh with a wave machine, and there was also a fast river run and flumes. It was closed in January 2012 in order to save funds for the Royal Commonwealth Pool's renovation and re-opening. A campaigning group against the closure, called Splashback, were funded to carry out feasibility studies, but the property has been converted into a children's soft-play centre. It first closed in November 1999 after problems were found including tiles coming away from walls, electrical problems and rusting structures. It reopened in 2002 and a new multisensory play area was introduced in 2003. Edinburgh's only other flumes opened at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in the late 80s, but unfortunately the much-loved 'Commie' flumes, including the ultra-fast Stingray and the more relaxing River Rapids, were removed in the early 2000s. 1 . Scotland in the Sun: Here are 23 fascinating pictures of Scots enjoying heatwaves in the 1960s and 1970s

Scotland is set to be hotter than Rio de Janero today (Friday, June 20) with temperatures expected to get close to 30C. Beaches and beer gardens will doubtless be packed as Scots enjoy the weather. Scotland's summers are getting progressively hotter due to global warming (although it may sometimes feel like they're not getting any drier) – with Glasgow in particular having its warmest summer ever in 2021 . However heatwaves are nothing new for Scots, with many having particularly evocative memories of 1976, when a spell of dry and warm weather spanned the end of June and the majority of July and August. We've had a look back in the archives to find a few pictures from that year, and some of the other times temperatures rocketed north of the border, 1 . Royal Highland Show History: Here are 29 amazing pictures from the show in the 1950s and 1960s

Held annually in June at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston, the Royal Highland Show is organised by the Royal Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland and is taking place this week. With over 1,000 exhibitors, 6,000 animals, and up to 190,000 visitors, it is by far the largest event of its type in Scotland, generating over £200 million in business and offering prize money of over £1 million. The first Royal Highland Show was held in 1822 at Edinburgh's Canongate, where the Scottish Parliament now stands, and moved to different locations in Scotland each year. The Ingliston site became the permanent home of the show in 1960 and it has been held there ever since – originally running from Sunday-Wednesday and later from Thursday-Sunday, The 'royal' title was bestowed upon it by King George VI at the 1948 show held in Inverness. A range of livestock is exhibited at the show each year, including sheep, cattle, goats, horses, ponies, donkeys, and poultry. Prizes are awarded to the best animals, with the most prestigious livestock honour, the Queen's Cup, rotating between the champions of the various types of livestock – in 2025 it will be awarded to the best goat. Being a showcase for all things rural and agricultural, the show includes large exhibits of agricultural machinery and supplies, equine supplies and outdoor sporting goods, while a wide range of associations set up stalls to promote their interests. Meanwhile, the exhibition halls include shopping arena and a food and drink arena which are both dominated by Scottish producers. Other attractions include music being played at the two show bandstands, and competitions and events such as sheep shearing, show jumping, driving, tug-of-war, dog obedience trials, forestry, falconry, farriery and other rural pursuits.
