Meet Pokey, an undersized Eastern box turtle with a cult following

When she first met the eastern box turtle named Pokey, Cleo Bowen-Wiggins was still in diapers — far too young to recognize she was in the presence of a local celebrity. But like so many others, she was captivated by the creature, sparking an unlikely friendship that endured for years. So there was no question as to whether Bowen-Wiggins, now 15, would be in attendance Saturday for Pokey's 30th birthday celebration. Held at Pokey's home inside the Rock Creek Park Nature Center and Planetarium in D.C., the event doubled as a turtle tribute.

Beaver Lake boardwalk on track for early summer reopening

BENTON COUNTY, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — Construction on the Lake Loop Trail Boardwalk is closing in on its final phases, according to the Beaver Lake Nature Center. The trail remains on schedule for an early summer reopening, though a specific date has not been announced. Recent photos show newly elevated boardwalk sections designed to handle water level changes, with added curbs and railings for improved safety and accessibility. 'Please remember that the Lake Loop Trail Boardwalk area is still a very active construction zone as they complete the foundation, remove the old boardwalk, build railings and curbs and restore the trail in the last stages of their work,' Beaver Lake Nature Center said in a Facebook post. The post said updates will be provided as the reopening date approaches. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
