Municipalities celebrate Mandela Day by carrying out community service initiatives

ERMELO – As the world prepared to honour Nelson Mandela's legacy on his birthday, July 18, Mpumalanga geared up to mark the occasion with a wide range of community service initiatives across all 17 local municipalities. The Mpumalanga premier, Mandla Ndlovu, issued a directive that Mandela Day activities be rolled out in various wards across the province, emphasising the importance of active community involvement. He called on residents to play their part in addressing the challenges faced by underprivileged communities. This year's Mandela Day theme, 'It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequality,' encourages renewed efforts to confront persistent social and economic challenges. Premier Ndlovu, together with Msukaligwa executive mayor Mapule Nkosi and local councillors, pledged to spend 67 minutes repairing damaged roads in selected streets. The gesture aligns with the international campaign that encourages people to devote 67 minutes of service – symbolising the 67 years Mandela dedicated to public life – to meaningful acts of community upliftment. Additional activities included painting public buildings, repairing water and sanitation infrastructure, and distributing food to vulnerable residents. Local leaders, councillors and community members were urged to unite in service to demonstrate their commitment to Mandela's values of dignity, justice and compassion. Premier Ndlovu said these collective efforts reflect the Mpumalanga Government's commitment to humanitarian service, and its continued resolve to uphold Mandela's legacy by tackling poverty and inequality in the province. Giyani woman uses football to uplift youth

LIMPOPO – Stella Ndlovu, a passionate community leader from Gawula village, has taken it upon herself to harness the unifying power of football to promote social change and economic growth. While the football season is on pause, she organises tournaments to keep the youth off the streets and positively engaged. 'There's no better way to keep young people off the streets than by giving them something entertaining to do, and sports is the perfect tool for that,' Ndlovu explained. According to her, the tournament has become a beacon of hope for many young people who would otherwise be vulnerable to negative influences. 'When they hear that there's soccer somewhere, they all feel compelled to either participate or come to watch,' she said. Beyond offering young people a positive way to channel their energy, the event breathes life into local enterprises. Small vendors set up stalls around the grounds, selling refreshments, snacks, and other goods to spectators who flock in from neighbouring villages. 'As a community, this also promotes unity as people from different villages come together and have fun. There's no better place to meet people and build relationships than at a football game. 'Because that's where everyone gathers with the shared goal of supporting their teams despite any differences they might have,' Ndlovu added. In a space often dominated by men, Ndlovu stands out as a woman organiser determined to make sports more inclusive and accessible. She urged the community to rally behind local youth initiatives: 'Let us all come together and support our kids through sports.' While she had initially planned to host a top sixteen tournament, scheduling constraints prompted her to scale it down. 'Normally, I would have organised a top sixteen tournament but had to opt for a top eight so that we do not clash with the mayor's cup event that is starting next week,' she explained. However, Ndlovu assured that once the mayor's cup concludes, she will proceed with the larger competition as planned. With dedicated individuals like Stella Ndlovu at the forefront, football in Gawula is proving to be much more than a game, it is a force for unity, empowerment, and positive change. Meanwhile, the final match of the day featured Gawula Academy FC taking on Makoxa FC. After a goalless draw in regulation time, Gawula Academy clinched victory in the penalty shootout with a 5–4 scoreline and walked away with an R5 000 prize, while Makoxa FC received R2 000 for finishing in second place. Premier Ndlovu Reshuffles Mpumalanga Executive Council in Bid to Restore Governance

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu has announced a significant reshuffle of the provincial executive council, removing two Members of the Executive Council (MECs) from their positions and appointing new leadership across key departments. The move, according to Ndlovu, is aimed at improving governance and restoring public trust in the provincial administration. During a media briefing in Mbombela on Tuesday, Ndlovu confirmed the dismissal of Education MEC Cathy Dlamini and MEC for Economic Development and Tourism Makhosazane Masilela. Their removal comes amid ongoing concerns about poor governance, with the Department of Education recently embroiled in controversy over a R2 million laptop procurement scandal. Ndlovu said the reshuffle followed extensive consultations and was necessary to ensure proper service delivery across the province. 'These changes were not taken lightly. They followed a thorough assessment of departmental performance and are aimed at strengthening our ability to deliver quality services to the people of Mpumalanga,' he said. The Premier then introduced the new members of the executive council. Lindi Masina takes over as MEC for Education, while Jester Sidell assumes the role of MEC for Economic Development and Tourism. Khethiwe Moeketsi has been appointed MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development and Environmental Affairs, and Nompumelelo Hlophe is now the MEC for Social Development. 'I call on all newly appointed MECs to carry out their responsibilities with integrity and diligence,' Ndlovu added. Ndlovu confirmed the termination of the employment contract of the Head of Department for Culture, Sport and Recreation, Godfrey Ntombela. Ntombela had been suspended over allegations of irregular procurement and maladministration linked to COVID-19 relief spending. 'The contract of Mr Godfrey Ntombela has been terminated with immediate effect,' said Ndlovu. 'This decision follows a detailed process of assessment, and it was not taken lightly. We have also uncovered serious allegations of fraud, where the former premier's electronic signature was used in an attempt to unlawfully extend his contract.' According to Ndlovu, Ntombela's contract had been extended by former Premier Refiloe Mtshweni-Tsipane from 1 March 2024 to 28 September 2024, but recent findings suggest that the extension may have involved fraudulent activity. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Mpumalanga have welcomed the Premier's actions, saying the changes were long overdue. The party expressed hope that the new executive council would bring stability and improved service delivery to residents of the province. The swearing-in of the new MECs took place shortly after the announcement, with Ndlovu reiterating his commitment to ethical governance and improved public administration. He also warned that further changes could follow if officials do not meet performance expectations.

Convicted serial killer, ex-cop in court for alleged murder plot

Convicted serial killer and former police officer Nomia Rosemary Ndlovu appeared in the Kempton Park Regional Court this morning alongside her former colleague Nomsa Mudau on charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Kempton Express reports the case was postponed to October 1 after representation did not arrive for the hearing. On June 5, the case against the two former police officers was also postponed for a Section 174 application. Ndlovu, formerly stationed at the Tembisa Police Station, and Mudau, who served at the Norkem Park Police Station, are accused of conspiring to kill Mudau's ex-husband, Justice Mudau. It is alleged Mudau promised to pay the hitmen using proceeds from a life insurance policy she had taken out in her ex-husband's name. However, instead of carrying out the killing, the hitmen tipped him off. Ndlovu was sentenced in 2021 to six life terms in prison for the murders of five of her relatives and her partner. Mpumalanga premier fires 2 MECs and an HOD

Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu reshuffled his Cabinet today, firing two MECs and terminating the contract of a senior departmental head with immediate effect. According to Mpumalanga News, Ndlovu removed MEC for Education Cathy Dlamini and MEC for Economic Development and Tourism Makhosazane Masilela. He also announced the termination of Godfrey Ntombela's contract as Head of the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation. Former Ehlanzeni Executive Mayor Jesta Sidell was appointed as the new MEC for Economic Development and Tourism, while Provincial Legislature Speaker Lindi Masina was named the new MEC for Education. Both were sworn in by Deputy Judge President Takalani Vincent Ratshibvumo and will assume their duties immediately. 'The removal of Dlamini and Masilela comes after the provincial government had made several assessments across the departments and realised we needed to make certain changes. This is aimed at strengthening the work of government to address service delivery as well as a number of other challenges that impede us from reaching the targets set for this administration,' Ndlovu said. On Ntombela's termination, Ndlovu said: 'It has also come to my attention that fraud has been committed, whereby former Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane's electronic signature was used for the extension of Ntombela's contract. There is also an alleged payment of R80 000, exchanged for the misuse of the former premier's electronic signature. This matter is viewed in a very serious light. As a result I have consulted the acting provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, to investigate the matter.'
