Oman marks International Day of Plant Health
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman joins the world in celebrating the International Day of Plant Health, observed annually on 12 May. This year's event is held under the theme 'The Importance of Plant Health for a One Health Approach." The occasion highlights the critical role of plant health as a cornerstone of food security, closely linked to human and animal health as well as environmental sustainability. Healthy plants provide nutrient-rich food systems for humans and livestock while contributing to ecological balance. The International Day of Plant Health aims to raise global awareness about protecting plants and crops from pests and diseases, preserving natural resources, and enhancing plant health. These efforts support global food security, environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, pollution reduction, safe trade, and socio-economic development. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and regional bodies such as the Near East Plant Protection Organization are organising scientific events to mark the occasion, promoting awareness of plant health's significance and its role in global economic development. The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources continues to monitor laboratory test reports and pest risk analyses based on epidemiological data from exporting countries. Additionally, the ministry is enhancing workforce training to improve efficiency in line with global advancements in plant health.

Why Did Harvard Drop Its ‘Semitic' Museum?
My former colleague Peter Der Manuelian suggests that there's nothing to see in a Harvard museum's name change (Letters, May 3). Yet it's hard to see how renaming the institution the 'Museum of the Ancient Near East' reflects its mission more accurately than the adjective 'Semitic' did. The timing of the change in 2020, coinciding with a rise in anti-Zionism, suggests it was done not because 'few people know what that word means' but because many know it includes the Jews and their homeland. Anti-Israel agitation at Harvard was unmistakable. The museum anticipated the question, 'Why now?,' by suggesting the change wasn't a reaction to any event but reflected 'our core mission in clearer terms.' Rather, it had transformed that core mission and changed the name to make it irreversible.

Arab Finance: Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development, and International Cooperation of Egypt, discussed expanding cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in sustainable agriculture, food security, and climate projects, as per a statement. In her meeting with AbdulHakim Elwaer, FAO's Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa, Al-Mashat outlined joint efforts to promote economic development in light of the comprehensive partnership between Egypt and the UN. Al-Mashat also reviewed the ministry's priorities and responsibilities to achieve qualitative and sustainable growth. She noted that the merger of the two Ministries of Planning and Economic Development and International Cooperation contributes to boosting integration between local resources and international partnerships. The minister also asserted the government's commitment to maximizing the benefits of its constructive partnership with the FAO in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDCF) until 2027. The program focuses on investment in human capital, inclusive economic development, transparency and governance, women's empowerment, and environmental sustainability. Al-Mashat highlighted the growth in investments pumped into the agriculture and land reclamation sector within the economic and social development plan, which jumped by 20% during fiscal year (FY) 2024/2025, compared to the previous FY. The two sides reviewed joint efforts within the framework of implementing the national platform for the NWFE program that focuses on interacting water, food, and energy projects. This includes key projects to support sustainability in the water and food sectors, while contributing to enhancing food security efforts in Egypt. © 2020-2023 Arab Finance For Information Technology.
