African Champions League semi-finals both end goalless

JOHANNESBURG, April 19 (Reuters) - Both African Champions League semi-final first-leg ties on Saturday ended goalless, giving Egyptian clubs Al Ahly and Pyramids an advantage for next weekend's return matches. Holders Al Ahly, looking for a fifth title in six years, held Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria before Pyramids also ensured an away stalemate at Orlando Pirates in Soweto later on Saturday. Al Ahly, who have won a record 12 Champions League titles, twice had the ball in Sundowns' net but both efforts were ruled offside. They also saw their Slovenian striker Nejc Gradisar hit the crossbar with a first-half effort. The hosts had the bulk of the possession but found no way to penetrate the tight Egyptian defence. It was the same for the attacking Pirates at the Orlando Stadium where Pyramids also proved stoic in defence. Pyramids also managed to twice breach Pirates' defences but VAR ruled offside the first effort and disallowed the second for a handball. The return legs will be played in the Egyptian capital on Friday when Al Ahly host Sundowns at the Cairo International Stadium followed by Pyramids against Pirates at the city's smaller Air Defence Stadium. The aggregate winners advance to the two-legged final in late May and early June.

Ahly beat Talae El-Geish but Pyramids remain in 1st place after overpowering Ceramica

Ahly's relentless attacking display paid off as they secured a 2-0 victory over Talae El-Geish in the 17th round of the Egyptian Premier League at Cairo International Stadium on Wednesday. Ahly Moroccan winger Achraf Bencharki named Man of the Match. However, playing at the same time, first-place Pyramids FC overcame Ceramica Cleopatra 2-1 to maintain their three-point lead over the Red Devils in the race to win their first-ever league trophy. A strike in the opening minute of the second-half from Slovenian striker Nejc Gradisar and an injury-time penalty by Marwan Attia sealed the victory for the Red Devils. Playing with intensity Ahly pressed forward with intent and goals after the start whistle. In the very first minute, Palestinian striker Wissam Abou Ali nearly gave his team an early lead with a left-footed shot that deflected off a Talae defender before being comfortably gathered by the goalkeeper. Ten minutes later, another chance came as Abou Ali met a precise cross from midfielder Emam Ashour, only for his right-footed strike to be denied by El-Geish's keeper. Talae El-Geish relied on a steadfast defense and swift counterattacks to blunt Ahly's early onslaught. In the 23rd minute, a quick counter saw Islam Mohareb send in a cross that was met by Ahmed Meteb's header, which, however, drifted wide. Three minutes later, a well-worked move involving Yussry Whaid and Ragab Omran resulted in a shot from outside the box that Ahly's Mostafa Shobeir easily stopped. Despite numerous efforts, including well-placed crosses from Hussein El-Shahat and strong headers from Achraf Bencharki, the first half ended goalless. However, the breakthrough came early in the second half. A beautifully orchestrated play started with a long pass just outside the penalty area. Emam Ashour rose above the defense to head the ball down for Nejc Gradisar, whose first-touch finish found the back of the net after Talae El-Geish goalkeeper Mohamed Shaaban fumbled an easy save. Buoyed by their opening goal, Ahly continued to press, even as a VAR review in the 60th minute saw a penalty for Wissam Abou Ali overturned. Ahly's persistent pressure earned them a penalty in the seventh minute of injury time after a Talae El-Geish defender, Khaled Awad, over-tackled Ahly winger Ahmed Abdallah. Marwan Attia stepped up confidently and converted, sealing a well-earned victory. With the loss, Talae El-Geish remained in 10th place with 21 points and will fight to avert relegation with eight other teams in the second half of the abridged 25-week exceptional season. Preview: Ahly aim to maintain momentum against Ghazl El-Mahalla - Egyptian Football

Suffering from several absentees, holders Ahly will be looking to secure their third successive league title to enhance their position in the Egyptian Premier League title race when they face rivals Ghazl El-Mahalla in the 13th matchday on Tuesday. The Red Devils, who clinched a narrow 2-1 victory over Petrojet on Thursday, currently sit second in the league table with 26 points from 12 games, three points ahead of third-place Zamalek and one point behind leaders Pyramids FC. The defending champions can rely on the outstanding form of talisman Emam Ashour and January signing striker Nejc Gradisar who have contributed to eight goals in the past three games. Ahly is missing a host of players but most notably top marksman Wessam Abou Ali, international defender Yasser Ibrahim, Morocco's duo Achraf Dari and Yahia Attiat-Allah and winger Taher Mohamed Taher due to injuries. Also, Ahly's new signing forward Achraf Bencharki, who is yet to make his first appearance with the team, won't be available for the game as he didn't recover yet from his muscular injury. On the other side, Mahalla's newly appointed Cypriot coach Nikodimos Papavasiliou will be looking to make an impact against Ahly. Nikodimos started his second tenure with Mahalla earlier this month in a bid to rescue the team from facing relegation after a series of poor results. He secured a precious winning start; guiding the team to a 2-1 league win over Modern SC on Thursday. The team sit in the 15th place of the League table with 11 points from 12 games.
