After Mukesh Ambani's Jio, Sunil Mittal's Airtel, Elon Musk now in talks with BSNL and Ratan Tata's…, for…

According to media reports, Elon Musk's company has been in discussions with BSNL and Tata Group's Nelco and Hughes Communications. Elon Musk's Starlink is already in partnershio with Sunil Mittal's Airtel and Mukesh Ambani's Jio to bring satellite internet services to India. Under which, Jio and Airtel will help Starlink deliver its services to customers. However, Musk's company, Starlink, doesn't want to rely on just one or two partners but to expand its services in India. Some reports suggest that his company has reached out to BSNL, Nelco, and Hughes Communications. Starlink wants to work with multiple companies and roll out satellite internet services across the country. Starlink is planning to deliver satellite internet services both directly or through partnerships. The company will provide its services independently and also through third-party networks. Reports even claim that Starlink is in talks with Vodafone-Idea for potential collaborations. Elon Musk Plans According to reports, Starlink is working on building three satellite gateway stations in Mumbai, Pune, and Indore. It also plans to establish a Point of Presence in Mumbai. The Indian government has made it clear that companies like Starlink will only receive approval if they fully comply with the country's regulations. The government also asked them to store Indian user data within the country. All satellite terminals in space must be linked to networks with a base in India. Starlink Satellite Fleet Starlink currently has the largest fleet of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The company has over 4,400 first-generation satellites and 2,500 second-generation satellites. Its goal is to deploy 30,000 satellites in space. However, Starlink hasn't received approval from the U.S. government for this plan.

Starlink eyes multiple Indian partners to fast-track local satcom launch

Starlink is in talks with Indian firms like BSNL, Nelco, and Jio to launch satellite internet services in India, aiming for rapid expansion through local partnerships across the country Rimjhim Singh New Delhi Elon Musk's satellite internet venture Starlink has begun discussions with key Indian players in the satellite communication (satcom), telecom, and broadband sectors, including Tata Group-owned Nelco, Hughes Communications, and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), according to a report by The Economic Times. Starlink aims to onboard multiple partners to accelerate the rollout of its services across India. The company is looking at both direct and partnership-led models to offer its services in India, the news report quoted a source as saying. Similar to its global approach with telecom majors like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, Starlink is expected to sign non-exclusive reselling agreements. This strategy allows the company to collaborate with several entities simultaneously, widening its market access. Vodafone Idea also in preliminary talks India's third-largest telecom operator, Vodafone Idea, recently disclosed that it is in early discussions with a few satellite service providers, including Starlink, to explore potential synergies. Starlink is keen to leverage its massive satellite bandwidth by distributing it through multiple local partners, ensuring widespread availability, the news report said. To support its Indian operations, Starlink is planning to establish three satellite gateway stations in Mumbai, Pune, and Indore, along with a point of presence (PoP) in Mumbai. The company claims its bandwidth capacity surpasses that of competitors like Eutelsat OneWeb and Reliance Jio-SES by nearly 80 to 90 times. Currently, Starlink operates using around 4,400 generation-1 satellites and over 2,500 satellites from its newer generation-2 fleet. The firm has proposed to deploy up to 30,000 generation-2 satellites globally in the coming years, as communicated to Indian authorities. Earlier this month, senior Starlink executives met with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal to discuss investment prospects, technology integration, and local partnerships. The discussions also emphasised Starlink's interest in extending services to underserved and remote regions, including parts of Northeast and other difficult-to-reach areas. Awaiting regulatory approval Despite not having secured the necessary licences to operate in India, Starlink is actively preparing for launch by engaging with local companies and government bodies. Under its proposed collaborations with Jio and Airtel, the two telecom companies may distribute Starlink's hardware and services through their retail networks. Starlink has agreed to most of the terms required for obtaining the Global Mobile Personal Communication by Satellite Services (GMPCS) licence from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). These include setting up a control and monitoring centre within India and ensuring data routing does not pass through countries sharing land borders with India. However, the company is yet to fully comply with requirements related to establishing monitoring infrastructure along international borders and providing full coverage, particularly in sensitive regions such as Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. According to the rules, companies are required to facilitate monitoring by law enforcement agencies within a 10-kilometre radius of international boundaries.

Starlink dials Indian satcom, telecom and broadband cos for tieups

New Delhi: Elon Musk-owned Starlink has initiated discussions with various satcom, telecom, and broadband companies, such as Hughes, Tata Group-led Nelco, and state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL), to join hands for starting services locally, people aware of the details told added that Starlink plans to partner with as many firms as possible in a bid to help expand its services quickly. "Starlink plans to offer its services on its own as well as through partnerships with different players," said a person tracking the to deals with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, Starlink typically signs reselling agreements with partners that include no exclusivity clauses, allowing it to engage a large number of collaborators. Queries sent to BSNL, Nelco, and SpaceX remained unanswered at the time of going to press, while Hughes offered no comment. Last month, Vodafone Idea , India's number 3 telco, had said it was in exploratory talks with various satcom providers, including Starlink, for a potential collaboration. Starlink has massive capacity, and the company wants to sell it to people through different partners. The company's capacity is expected to be 80 to 90 times more than that of rivals Eutelsat OneWeb or Reliance Jio-SES. The company plans to set up three gateways - in Mumbai, Pune, and Indore - and one point of presence in Mumbai to cater to the India market. Starlink is currently offering satcom services in many countries through its generation-1 satellites, totalling around 4,400, and generation-2 satellites, of which more than 2,500 have already been launched. Starlink plans to have 30,000 generation-2 satellites in the coming years, the US major has told the government. Senior executives at Starlink had met Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal earlier this month to discuss investments, technology, and partnerships as the firm prepares the ground to enter India. Apart from the discussion on investments, the company officials had also discussed Starlink's intent to serve the unserved and underserved areas in India, like regions of the North-East and other remote parts of the country. Even though Starlink is yet to get the regulatory approvals in the country to start services, the company has started to do the groundwork for offering its services. As per the deals with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, the two telcos would sell Starlink equipment and services at their outlets, besides exploring other means of cooperation. While Starlink has agreed to a majority of the conditions to secure a global mobile personal communications by satellite services (GMPCS) license from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), a few concerns remain. For example, the company has agreed to the key need of setting up a network control and monitoring center in India, and it also will not be routing data through gateways in countries sharing land borders with India. Starlink, however, has yet to agree to setting up monitoring zones across India's international borders and provisioning services across the country, including certain areas of J&K and Ladakh. Current rules stipulate companies to provide monitoring facilities for 10 kilometers across international borders to law enforcement agencies (LEAs). ET reported on February 22 that the US company had submitted all necessary documents to In-SPACe and is close to getting approvals. India's space economy is reckoned to have the potential to touch $44 billion by 2033, boosting its global share to 8% from 2% currently, as per IN-SPACe.
