Zakithi Nene beats personal best time, clocking 43. 76 in dominant 400m at Kip Keino Classic
The in-form Zakithi Nene (centre) is the headline act in the 400m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, where he broke his PB on Saturday. | BackpagePix South Africa's one-lap star Zakithi Nene stormed to a world leading time this year of 43.76 seconds, smashing his personal best, in winning the 400m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on Saturday afternoon. The sprint sensation finally delivered on the threat to run a sub-44-second time in an individual race, having already done so in the 4X400m relay earlier this year. He also quickly put behind him last week's Rabat Diamond League disappointment, when he was pipped to the line by American Jacory Patterson. Before Saturday's race, the American had also held the world-leading time this year. There would be no close finish this time as Nene flew out of the blocks in typical fashion and only grew stronger as the race wore on. He finished more than a second ahead of Nigeria's Africa Games champion Chidi Okezie (44.98), while local runner Zablon Ekwam finished in third (45.01). Nene's coach, Victor Vaz, had predicted a "comfortable win" for his charge in the build-up to the race that is part of the World Athletics Continental tour. Yet even he could not not have imagined such an emphatic response to last weekend's disappointment.

Zakithi Nene joins sub-44-second club with speedy victory in Nairobi
Zakithi Nene has become the second South African after Wayde van Niekerk to run the 400m under 44 seconds, clocking a 43.76sec world lead in Nairobi. He won the 400m there by more than a second, with Nigerian Chidi Okezie finishing in 44.98. Nene, who anchored the South African 4x400m team to gold at World Relays earlier in May, eclipsed American Jacory Patterson as the fastest one-lap competitor in the world so far this year. Patterson had been the only man to have been under 44.00 with the 43.98 he clocked in China in early May. Nene's effort on Saturday lifted him to 16th on the all-time list, which is topped by Van Niekerk with his 43.03 world record. Van Niekerk has been quicker than Nene on only four occasions.

Dr Shriram Nene suggests ways to beat the summer heat: ‘Drink before you are thirsty, and..'
Dr Shriram Nene, a cardiothoracic surgeon and public health advocate, often shares helpful tips and tricks on his social media to keep the public aware. In a recent upload, he shared some easy ways to help Indians tackle the unbearable heat during the summer months. 'Staying cool isn't just about comfort, it's about your health. Dehydration, fatigue, and heat strokes are real risks. But with a few smart habits, you can enjoy the season without letting the heat get to you,' he wrote on Instagram. Check out Dr Nene's suggestions below: '3.7L water for men and 2.7L for women. Drink before you are thirsty, and avoid sugary drinks and alcohol as they make it worse,' he said. Dr Basavaraj S Kumbar, Consultant- Internal Medicine, Aster Whitefield Hospital, Bengaluru, added that you should drink 8-10 glasses a day, always carry a water bottle, and add lemon, cucumber, or mint to your water for a refreshing twist. Begin with a glass of water in the morning to kick-start hydration and metabolism. 'Reduce your intake of coffee, energy drinks, and sodas. Instead, have coconut water, herbal tea, or lemon water. Too much caffeine and sugar may cause dehydration, lethargy, and bloating, leaving you feeling sluggish,' he shared. Dr Nene urged people to stay indoors from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and take cold showers if they feel drained. A post shared by Dr. Shriram Nene (@drneneofficial) 'Loose, light coloured clothes > dark, tight ones. Sunblock, hat, sunglasses = heat armour,' said Dr Nene. Dr Basavraj concurred, further suggesting that people remain in shades and try to avoid direct sunlight between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. He added that people should wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen for additional protection from excess heat and dehydration. Dr Nene advised keeping the young and elderly out of the glare of the heat: 'Watch out for babies, the elderly, and folks with health issues, as they feel the heat way harder.' Dr Basavraj added a few more tips, starting with using hydration alarms or apps and abiding by the 8×8 rule (eight glasses of 8 ounces of water every day) to maintain steady intake. He added that taking small sips during the day is better than consuming huge amounts at a time. 'Make water-dense foods such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges, and strawberries a part of your diet, along with adding soups, smoothies, and fresh fruit juices. These not only hydrate but also contain crucial vitamins and minerals to cool the body,' said the expert. 'If you want to spice up your regular water, try choosing coconut water, which is high in electrolytes, or herbal teas such as chamomile or green tea, which contain antioxidants,' said Dr Basavraj. Flavoured water with fruits, mint, or cucumber makes the water tasty and provides nutrients, whereas buttermilk and fresh fruit juices keep you hydrated and fresh, he added. Zakithi Nene aiming to bounce back at the Kip Keino Classic after Diamond League blip
The in-form Zakithi Nene (centre) is the headline act in the 400m at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi. Image: BackpagePix SA's 400m star Zakithi Nene will be confident of setting the record straight when he lines up for the one-lap event at the Kip Keino Classic at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, Kenya on Saturday. The in-form 27-year-old sprinter took second position at last weekend's Diamond League meeting in Rabat, in 44.46 seconds. He looked on track for the win but was chased down on the home straight by American Jacory Patterson, who clocked 44.37. Olympic champion Quincy Hall took third in 44.90. Nene set a personal best time of 44.22 at the SA championships in Potchefstroom in April. He will headline another strong field on Saturday that will include Africa Games champion Chidi Okezie and Australia's Cooper Sherman and Portugal's Joao Coelho. Former national 400m champion Zablon Ekwam, who boasts a personal best of 44.69, is among the local runners who could pose an outside threat to the South African in their backyard, however. Nene's performances so far this year have deservedly earned him top billing in Kenya, including his starring role in SA's 4X400m gold at the recent World Relays in Guangzhou, China with a world lead 2:57.50. He ran the anchor leg in a team that featured Gardeo Isaacs and youngsters Udeme Okon and Leenderts Koekemore, clocking a split time of 43.63. That feat ensured all eyes were on Nene in Rabat to see if he could run another sub-44-second time. Unfortunately, he was not able to deliver. Nene's coach, Victor Vaz, feels conditions may have played a part, pointing out that all the runners ran slower than expected, even race winner Patterson. The American's 43.9 is the world-leading time this year. 'My impression was that conditions weren't that favourable for personal bests. I was obviously expecting Zak to run another 44.2 in the hope that he goes sub-44 in the future,' Vaz said. 'In my opinion, he didn't finish the race correctly. I think he started over-striding and leaning. He sensed the guy was coming for him in the last 10 metres and that slowed him down to the point where the guy could catch him just before the line. 'I thought he should have run through the line, instead of starting to dip a little bit early.' Vaz feels his sprinter is in the best shape of his life and is tipping him to rebound fairly quickly in Kenya. He is worried about the toll the recent travel is taking out on the track star, though. 'Statistically he has no opposition (at the Kip Keino Classic). Nigerian Okezie and Australian Sherman are the two closest guys, but they're still very far from his time. So I don't want to be overconfident and put a curse on the poor chap but I think, all things being right, he should comfortably win the race.

10 homes lost in Pietermaritzburg blaze as road access hinders fire truck
Blocked access to the Sxavathini informal settlement in Copesville, Pietermaritzburg, forced Msunduzi firefighters to resort to extreme measures yesterday, hauling buckets of water by hand to extinguish a shack fire. Speaking to The Witness, Msunduzi station officer Vusi Nene said about 10 shacks were gutted by flames yesterday afternoon. 'We are using buckets to douse the fire. We had to park the truck on the main road and walk quite a distance to the scene. The cause is undetermined. The fire has been contained,' added Nene. A tenant who did not want to be named, and had moved in on Sunday, said the incident left him devastated. 'I was still moving my stuff to this new place, which I thought was better than where I used to stay before. I left to get the rest of my stuff today (Monday), I came back, the house is on fire,' said the distraught tenant. He added that he lost most of his treasured documents. 'This is heartbreaking as I no longer have an identity document. All my hard work and savings to buy belongings had gone to waste,' he said. Ward councillor Sphamandla Madlala sympathised with the families who lost their homes and belongings. 'This is sad. What we need to establish is what caused the fire. I have contacted the disaster management department to go to the scene and provide assistance,' he said.
