Typhoon landed in China's Hainan island at a severe tropical storm level

BEIJING, June 14, (AP): A typhoon changed its path and landed in southern China's Hainan island at late night Friday. Typhoon Wutip, landed in Basuo township at a severe tropical storm level in the city of Dongfang in Hainan province, according to Hainan Meteorological Service. Its maximum sustained winds is 30 meters (98 feet) per second. This is the second time in 70 years the island has the country's first typhoon in the year. Typhoon Wutip was forecasted to make landfall around noon Saturday on the Chinese mainland near the border between Guangdong province and the Guangxi region. Authorities in Guangdong province evacuated more than 10,000 people, closed schools and canceled flights, trains and vessels Friday. It is unclear if Typhoon Wutip has caused any deaths or injuries. Photos posted by a Chinese news outlet showed toppled trees and a strewn corrugated metal fence at a construction site in the city of Sanya, a popular beach resort on Hainan. All schools, construction sites and tourist attractions in Sanya were closed and flights were suspended at the city's airport, the official Xinhua News Agency said. A dozen crew members were rescued Thursday night from a cargo ship that called for help, Xinhua said. The crew were transferred to a rescue vessel in rough seas with 3-meter (10-foot) waves. Typhoon Wutip had maximum sustained winds of 119 kilometers (74 miles) per hour before it landed. Guangdong activated rescue boats and helicopters, and more than 49,000 fishing boats returned to port, Xinhua said. The provincial meteorological agency forecast heavy rain and said tornadoes were possible. Wutip means "butterfly' in Cantonese, which is spoken in Macao. Countries and the Chinese regions of Hong Kong and Macao contribute the names for storms during the typhoon season. The last time the island had the country's first typhoon landfall was in 2008 with Typhoon Neoguri. Neoguri means "raccoon' in Korean.

Nongshim to raise ramyeon, snack prices on high costs

Nongshim Co., South Korea's leading instant noodle maker, said Thursday it will raise the prices of its instant noodle and snack products next week due to higher raw materials costs. Nongshim plans to raise the retail prices of 14 "ramyeon" products by 7.2 percent and three snack products by 7.4 percent starting March 17, the company said in a press release. In particular, the price of Shin Ramyun, which represents Nongshim's ramyeon products, will rise to 1,000 won ($0.69) from 950 won, while that of Saeukkang is set to rise to 1,500 won from 1,400 won, it said. "The price hike is inevitable to reflect the won's weakness (against the dollar) and rising raw materials prices," a company spokesperson said. A weak won drives up the purchasing cost of raw materials such as palm oil and starch largely imported from overseas. Nongshim said it is reversing the prices of Shin Ramyun and Saeukkang exactly to the levels seen before July 2023, when the company was forced to lower the two products' prices under government pressure to reflect a decline in grain prices. It has six domestic plants and six overseas ones -- two in the US and four in China. It sells instant noodle products represented by its flagship Shin Ramyun, Chapagetti and Neoguri noodles in global markets. For all of 2024, Nongshim's net profit fell 8.1 percent on-year to 157.63 billion won partly due to higher costs. Operating profit dipped 23 percent on-year to 163.07 billion won last year, while sales rose 0.8 percent to 3.44 trillion won. Nongshim earned about 70 percent of the overall sales from ramyeon sales in global markets. (Yonhap)
