9 midi skirt styles to ace the It-girl brief
Courtesy of Miu Miu If The Hemline Index—proposed by economist George Taylor in 1926—has any truth to its obvious whimsy, it seems we're headed for a recession. In contrast to the carefree attitude that comes with wearing a frothy mini, the industry is suggesting we give our skirts more fabric, pulling hemlines downwards over the knees. A sign of the times it may be, but it's one the zeitgeist is surely on board with—no matter the connotations. From the runways to the streets, the chic result of an organised takeover has us all convinced: the midi skirt is here to stay. Over the fall/winter 2025 season, fashion houses ruled in favour of the unassuming skirt style, which once carried a reticent quality to it. Instead, the midi was reclaimed in exquisite impressions. There were the delicious sculptures that played with volume and texture, such as the peplum, fringe-style skirts on Pieter Mulier's Alaïa runway. A sensual approach to styling also had a big part to play in the recent season; one might recall the effortless '90s feel of Calvin Klein's corporate refresh. Yet one can't possibly discuss the midi skirt revival without bringing Miuccia Prada's name into the pit; be it the Y2K candor at Miu Miu or the directional shapes at Prada. Alaïa fall/winter 2025. Getty Calvin Klein fall/winter 2025. Courtesy of Calvin Klein Prada fall/winter 2025. Courtesy of Prada Off the runway, the midi is one all the It girls are pulling out of their wardrobes as well. On any given day, one could scroll their social media feeds and find the likes of Gabbriette, Charli XCX or Alex Consani sporting a midi with ease, paired to an itty-bitty top no less. Cementing her cool girl status further over in Seoul, we've also been on the receiving end of Seulgi's layered skirt delivery in her recent teaser images for an impending comeback with fellow member Irene. And if you're asking Rihanna, it seems a Miu Miu midi was the only way to go for her third baby bump reveal. With its staying power a given, here comes the catch. Its diverse silhouettes run the gamut from updated pencil options to layered sheer numbers to choose from. But never say never, at least where we're concerned. Nine low-effort ways to wear soft stripes this summer
Sandy toes, seaside linen, and summer stripes. As style vibes go, this one's a classic. Well, sort of. There's a definite shift in mood and tone. Nautical lines feel cold. Deck chair tropes look overplayed. Shades of caramel, sage and light pink subjugate the bold and bright. In fact, anything that feels sharp or high-def warrants a filter. It's as if the fashion gods decided it's a soft life for stripes this season which must be why pyjama co-ords continue their trend domination. So, what can we expect? In aesthetic terms, comfort rules both fabric and silhouette. Roomy shirting is rivalled by puffy sleeve tops and quilted gilets – cushy and relaxed with laissez-faire string ties. For maximum ease, layer over a boxy tee and wear with an A-line or puff ball midi skirt with an elasticated waist, of course. Should tailoring be your north star, look to languid materials like satin in an unassuming palette (think Stine Goya's brown and sky blue or promote your matching set to something short and sweet as seen at Alberta Ferretti. Feeling playful? Pair mismatched stripes like diagonal with vertical styles, ensuring there's a colour throughline to keep you looking put together. Add off-duty accents like a slouchy cardigan, clogs or oversized suede bag. Just be sure to choose no more than two of these, so as not to confuse soft with sloppy. On those bare minimum days, consider a key piece like a striped polo or easy bandeau top for visual interest. Leave the rest to serendipity. Soft doesn't do effort, after all. Real reason Natalie Portman quit US to live in France
Natalie Portman has shed light on her decision to leave the US and move to France, where she is raising her family. The Oscar winner ditched Los Angeles and moved to Paris when her then-husband Benjamin Millepied accepted a job as the director of the Paris Opera Ballet. The 'Black Swan' actress shares two children, Aleph, 13, and Amalia, 8, with Millepied. Speaking with Marie Claire, Portman said Paris was 'one of the most exciting places to be in the world,' while praising the city's impressive art scene. 'It's really central in terms of the arts. It feels like things are happening in L.A., you know?' she said. 'New York is more where art is bought than where art is made. 'When Ben asked me if I wanted to go to Paris, I freaked. Everyone dreams of living in Paris.' The New York native stayed in Europe following the break-up with Millepied, revealing the Parisians understand her boundaries. 'They're very good at privacy here,' she told Net-a-Porter. 'I feel like the biggest compliment is 'elle est très discrète' ['she is very discreet'].' The Hollywood starlet said she also enjoys soaking up all the culture the European city has to offer. 'Even when it's cold and grey, there's always some incredible exhibit or concert or dinner party or writers in town; something fascinating and stimulating happening … and the frequent vacations are so clutch!' she said. The 43-year-old pushed back on a stereotype that Parisians are 'rude', pointing out the 'weird' social differences between the US and France. 'I find the people here are actually incredibly friendly – you just have to know how to interact, so that we're not the ones being rude,' she said. 'Now, when I go back to the US, I'm like, oh, I would go into a store and not say hello to everyone there? It's weird.' 'I think we have an assumption that Western cultures are all the same, and kind of evened out by all this pop culture that everyone consumes. It's not true: it's extremely specific here.' However, Portman has not cut all ties with the US. The 'Star Wars' actress retained residence in Los Feliz, Los Angeles she purchased in 2009 for $US3.3 million. Eight years later, Portman purchased a second California property in Montecito, which she picked up for $US6.5 million in June 2017. However, she quietly offloaded the home in an off-market deal in 2021 for $US8 million after relocating to France. According to Realtor, the sale netted the 'V for Vendetta' star a tidy profit, with $US1.5 million more than she bought it for. Portman's career has continued since she moved to Europe. The actress racked up numerous credits since she relocated in 2014, including roles in Marvel's blockbuster 'Avengers' series. She'll make her next appearance in the Guy Ritchie-directed heist movie, 'Fountain of Youth,' in which she stars alongside John Krasinski. Yoox Net-a-Porter's New Owner Reveals Plan for Profitability
Now that Richemont has offloaded the online luxury group Yoox Net-a-Porter, the e-tailers' loss-making will be Mytheresa's problem. In an investor call on Thursday, LuxExperience, the new luxury group that combines Mytheresa and Yoox Net-a-Porter, said that Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter's combined net sales dropped 11 percent to €1.2 billion ($1.3 billion) in 2024 and is on track to fall another 11 percent to €1 billion in 2025. Their off-price companions, Yoox and The Outnet, saw their combined sales decreased 19 percent to €957 million in 2024; the e-tailers' revenues are expected to decline another 14 percent to $826 million this year. That contrasts with Mytheresa's projected 7 percent growth to around €900 million in 2025. The numbers were revealed as LuxExperience announced more details of its post-merger plans to return the embattled companies to growth. Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter, as one luxury unit, and Yoox and The Outnet, as a separate off-price division, are targeting sales increases of more than 10 percent in the medium-to-long term. LuxExperience didn't disclose a target year. LuxExperience plans to drive growth for the overall group through more streamlined operations. Mytheresa, Net-a-Porter and Mr Porter, for example, will share an e-commerce platform and may use one another's warehouses in specific regions. That plan, which will take two to three years to implement, will cost as much as €250 million but will help push LuxExperience toward €4 billion in annual revenue and as much as 9 percent adjusted earnings before interests, taxes, depreciation and amortisation by 2030. Learn more: How Mytheresa Can Make Its YNAP Deal Work The German e-tailer's deal to acquire the London-based luxury site, and become a global luxury e-commerce giant, is only as viable as its ability to make the whole enterprise profitable. BoF unpacks what it could take to get there.

Natalie Portman reveals why she prefers living in Paris with her kids over Los Angeles: ‘Very good at privacy'
Natalie Portman prefers to raise her family in The City of Light as opposed to under the Hollywood stars. The 'Black Swan' actress, who moved to Paris in 2014, revealed she loves living in a European city that's bustling but has a culture that's polite and 'very good at privacy.' 'Even when it's cold and gray, there's always some incredible exhibit or concert or dinner party or writers in town; something fascinating and stimulating happening… and the frequent vacations are so clutch!' Portman told fashion outlet Net-a-Porter on Monday. 4 Natalie Portman and her family moved to Paris in 2014. 'Now, when I go back to the US, I'm like, oh, I would go into a store and not say hello to everyone there? It's weird.' The actress is now reportedly dating French musician Tanguy Destable. Portman stayed in France following the breakup with Millepied and praised how parents raise kids in France. 'All the kids that come to my house are, like, 'bonjour Madame' – and give me the bise [cheek-to-cheek kiss],' Portman told the outlet. 'And before they leave, they are, like, 'thank you for having me' – and if I'm not nearby, they'll come and find me to say it.' 4 Portman is reportedly dating a French musician after she finalized her divorce from Benjamin Millepied in March 2024. AFP via Getty Images Portman was born in Jerusalem, Israel, and rose to fame as a teenage star acting in films like 'Heat,' 'Mars Attacks' and 'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace.' She's not the only star who ditched the glitz and glamour of Los Angeles for a better family life. In 2014, Matthew McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, planted their roots in Austin, Texas. 4 Stars like Millie Bobby Brown and Matthew McConaughey left Los Angeles for a different lifestyle. 'I wanted them to have what I grew up around… There's a solid… amount of common sense that runs through it, it's untalked about, but we understand it here,' McConaughey told 'Today' in 2014. 'Stranger Things' actress Millie Bobby Brown swapped Hollywood for farm life in rural Georgia with her husband Jake Bongiovi, the son of singer Jon Bon Jovi. The couple tied the knot in May 2024 and Brown insisted that she loved the lifestyle during a March 2025 interview with Vanity Fair, but added that the country life is not easy. 'If you're not picking up horse s–t or washing a cow with your bare hands, then that life is not made for you. At all,' she told the outlet.
