Tesla in Talks With Nevada as It Explores Robotaxi Expansion

Tesla Inc. is in early talks with officials in Nevada about expanding its self-driving vehicle operations in the state as the automaker plans an expansion of its recently introduced robotaxi service. Officials from the office of Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo as well as the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles participated in the discussions last week, a spokesperson for the state's DMV said in a statement. No steps were taking beyond communication, the spokesperson said.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada DMV rejected a personalized license plate in February when someone with a Woman Veteran specialty plate asked for 'WAF' — presumably, a salute to the Women's Air Force program that ran from 1948 to 1976. The DMV reasoned that 'WAF' might stand for 'weird as f***.' That was just one among the 1,054 decisions issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles from April 24 to the end of March 2025. Most were clearly attempts to sneak phrases past the people who screen requests for personalized plates. 2023 LIST: See the license plates the Nevada DMV rejected in 2022 The DMV denied 885 requests and approved 120, including some 'with restrictions.' The DMV couldn't decide without a tiebreaking vote on five requests: YEETIT (denied) HIGGS B (approved GPASMF (denied) DNGRSS (approved) FP2WDW (approved) And 35 plates were recalled after they were initially issued. Among those: 10 plates deemed confusing to law enforcement because of repeated numbers that made them hard to read. Nevadans showed their creativity in coming up with those special plates. The DMV identified plates that fall into categories seen as vulgar, racist, sexual and gang-related, among others. They even stopped some plates because they were perceived references to British slang, Portuguese slang and gay men's slang. Plates with '69' were rejected as sexual references; '88' was flagged as a Nazi reference. 2022 LIST: Custom license plates approved and rejected by Nevada's DMV We have broken the list into smaller pieces below, each with their own theme. We have tried to obscure profanity and vulgar language, and we want to say thank you to anyone who's making that effort to put a license plate on their vehicle. Angry much? It's crazy the things people want to put on their license plates. Here are 73 personalized plates that went before the DMV judges from April 2024 to the end of March 2025: Cute-sexy works, but most of these 254 tries crossed the line: Profane or vulgar references were turned away almost every time, with 338 requests hitting this wall. People are sure to keep trying to get them past the DMV: Drug-related references will get your personalized plate denied, even if you don't realize you've done it. Those references aren't the type of fun DMV wants to see. Here are 62 examples: 'Gang-related' covers a lot of ground for the DMV, which put 168 requests in this category. Anything that has even a hint of a connection of support for Nazis falls here. Sometimes, just a 'G' in the request for a personalized plate will be seen as 'gangster,' and 'OG' isn't likely to slide: Some people like to repeat letters or numbers. It might not be their intention, but those license plates can be difficult for police or first responders to read quickly when there's a need. Here are some examples (93), along with cases in which the DMV said the plate would have made it unclear if it might be a police vehicle: So whether you're an Elon hater (ELONSUX) or you're just asleep at the wheel (ZZZZ3), good luck next time with your request. Have a flight and still need a Real ID? Nevada DMV to accept walk-ins

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Nevada DMV announced Friday that, starting May 5, it will accept walk-ins for residents who have upcoming flights and still need a Real ID. According to a release from the Department of Motor Vehicles, customers with flight arrangements in the following 45 days can walk in Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Reno, Carson City, Sahara, Flamingo, Decatur, and Henderson offices. Customers who walk in will be required to prove that they have an upcoming commercial flight. The Real ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005, and ever since, the DMV has issued compliant licenses and ID cards. Real IDs are easily identifiable with a star emblem in the upper right-hand corner. The deadline has been extended several times since 2005, but the new deadline, May 7, is 'the real deal,' the DMV said. It will not be extended again. 'There are many misconceptions about who needs a Real ID, and customers who assumed the date would move again were not worried about the previous deadlines,' DMV Director Tonya Laney said. 'Well, we are now seeing panic creep in amongst Nevadans who are trying to get their Real IDs. This is a problem for the rest of the customers in the state who already had appointments to get their regular DMV business done.' To offset the demand, the DMV initially allowed walk-ins on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. starting April 22. With appointments and walk-ins combined, the DMV saw 46,770 customers who needed a Real ID in April alone. 'If you do not have a need to board a commercial aircraft, enter a secure military facility or nuclear power plant, please do not panic!' said Laney. 'Your existing driver license, ID card or instruction permit is still a valid document for all other purposes.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Nevada residents hurry for Real IDs before deadline

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The deadline to get your real ID is approaching fast. Those who still need to get theirs have just over a week left to do so if they plan to fly after the May 7 deadline. While many are still trying to get their Real ID, it seems most people are already compliant with the federal mandate. 'We're hitting about 80% compliance in the state, which is great,' Hailey Foster, Public Information Officer for Nevada DMV, said. Still, there are many Nevadans who need to get their Real ID. 'We have been seeing an uptick in our operations,' Foster said. 'A lot of people are wanting to come in and get that Real ID.' The Nevada DMV had to add additional appointments to accommodate the demand. Those without a Real ID will not be able to board domestic flights or access certain federal buildings come next Wednesday, unless they have a passport. Meanwhile, at the airport, some people said they've had their Real ID for years. 'As soon as they told us to, right when COVID hit, many years ago,' Valerie Hooper, traveling from Virginia, said. 'Three years ago, I got mine…Mine was with my driver's license, so I've had it for three years,' West Virginia residents Art and Georgette Adams said. '[The process was] very easy. We just went to the DMV, filled out paperwork, and took a picture. We're here.' Las Vegas resident Willie Mack also said he got his Real ID when he renewed his driver's license. 'I was renewing my ID, and it automatically had it on there, and they said you were going to need it if you wanted to travel throughout the U.S. on a plane, so they already did their job for me,' Mack said. 'Now I ain't gotta wait in that long line.' For frequent flyers, getting their Real ID was a no-brainer. 'I needed the Real ID. I travel quite a bit. I travel once or twice a month. At the airport, it says that you need one,' Las Vegas resident Jaime Leona said. If you're unsure if you have a Real ID, look in the upper right corner. If your driver's license or ID has a star there, you have a Real ID. If the star is missing, you do not. While some states allow people to get their Real ID online, Nevada requires you to visit a DMV office in person. Nevada DMV is offering walk-in appointments every Tuesday from 3 to 4 p.m. until May 15. You can also schedule Wednesday appointments starting at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. To schedule an appointment, visit the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles Official Website and search 'Appointments'. You must have ALL of the following to get a Real ID at the DMV: Proof of identity (one document) Proof of name change (if you've changed your name) Proof of Social Security number Proof of your Nevada residential address (two documents required) Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Nevada lawmakers target illegal DMV scalpers selling appointments

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Scalping DMV appointments has been an ongoing issue. Con artists are selling appointments to those willing to pay up, except they have no affiliation with the DMV and are scamming you out of your money and time. Lawmakers are pushing for change. Senate Bill 169 would provide protections for consumers and other businesses who have fallen victim. The bill would require a third-party reservation platform to have explicit written permission before leasing any restaurants or business services. Violators would be subject to civil penalties ensuring that unsupervised listings and misleading marketing practices are held accountable. Those in favor of the bill also want to impose hefty fines on violators as scalping affects public services like the DMV, creating unfair costs and accessibility issues. Malee and Tiara Simpson spent an hour and a half at the DMV and know how hard it can be to get an appointment. 'We had to wait a month for this appointment, and we had to make sure we had the right documents, and if you're trying to travel and on a time crunch, I can see how someone can fall for a scam trying to get in there,' Simpson explained. Paolo David, the Public Information officer for Nevada DMV said the agency will not try to message you to book an appointment and you don't have to pay to schedule an appointment. He said many services can also be completed online at their official website. 'As for the moment we are remaining neutral on the bill, however, it came to our attention that there are some predatory websites that are trying to get money from the public,' David remarked. 'Again, we do discourage trying to get an appointment from an outside person. The number one thing is trying to communicate to the public that we are actually here and we're being transparent and we want you to be safe as well.' Mary said she is interested to see the outcome of the bill and also added that there needs to be more action done to prevent these types of scams. 'There's so many scammers out there, we have to be careful of everything,' Mary added. 'I've got some friends that have fallen into the scams of various ones so I'm always careful.' Under a proposed amendment, violations would be classified under the Nevada Deceptive Trade Practices Act allowing the Attorney General to take action against offenders and it would allow businesses to privately sue these scalpers. New York was the first state to pass a similar bill last year and lawmakers say SB 169 is mirrored after that bill. Seven states have also proposed similar bills like Florida, California, and South Carolina. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
