Patriots' Stefon Diggs' Ability to Perform and Lead is Crucial in 2025
Patriots' Stefon Diggs' Ability to Perform and Lead is Crucial in 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots went out and signed receiver Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract this offseason to give quarterback Drake Maye his No. 1 option in the passing game. Advertisement However, Diggs comes with quite some risk. The four-time Pro-Bowler is an elite receiver; let's not get that twisted. But he's had his troubles in the locker room, with teammates and coaches, and he's currently recovering from a torn ACL that ended his 2024 season early. Diggs' tenure in New England didn't have the strongest start, as the first glimpses of him after signing his contract with the Patriots were on a boat with an unknown substance. This obviously led to many questions and immediate turmoil for the Patriots. But, Diggs and new head coach Mike Vrabel seem to have talked things out, he showed up for minicamp, and he seems to be in the right head space ahead of the 2025 season. The All-Pro receiver looks ahead of schedule in his ACL recovery and has shown leadership during offseason activities. All things have pointed in a positive direction since Diggs showed up to minicamp this summer, and that's exactly what the Patriots need. Maye's and New England's success in 2025 will crucially rely on Diggs' ability to perform and be a leader for the Patriots. Advertisement New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs (8) tries to catch the ball during minicamp at Gillette Stadium. The largest reason for optimism for Diggs this season is the positive trends in his injury recovery. The veteran receiver has shown, when healthy, he's one of the best receivers in the league. Prior to his injury-riddled 2024 season, Diggs caught over 1,000 yards in six straight years, and led the NFL with 127 receptions for 1,535 yards in his All-Pro 2020 season. Furthermore, Diggs has familiarity with Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' offensive system, as he played in a similar offense during his time with the Minnesota Vikings. "Diggs doesn't just have familiarity with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels' scheme — it helped bring out the best seasons of his career. While in Minnesota, he was deployed in various roles, from working in the slot to being Minnesota's deep threat all while playing under five offensive coordinators in five years," The Athletic's Chad Graff wrote. "But in Buffalo, Diggs thrived under then-OC Brian Daboll. And Daboll, of course, used a playbook largely developed with concepts from his time working under Josh McDaniels in New England. Advertisement "Now, Diggs re-enters that scheme with McDaniels back as Patriots' offensive coordinator. So, even if Diggs' practice reps are limited this summer, he shouldn't face a steep climb in mastering the playbook." Diggs will also bring a veteran presence to a young Patriots' receiver room, which makes the leadership aspect that much more important. The Patriots also signed veteran Mack Hollins in the offseason, and return Kendrick Bourne. But after that, none of New England's receivers have more than two years of experience in the NFL. "Patriots could use Diggs serving as a bit of an on-field coach, too. There's the familiarity with the offense, sure, but Diggs brings a track record of success to a pair of second-year receivers (Ja'Lynn Polk and Javon Baker) who underwhelmed as rookies," Gaff wrote. "They could, in an ideal world, benefit from observing the way Diggs runs routes." Advertisement The Patriots also drafted receiver Kyle Williams in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft and signed receiver Efton Chism III as an undrafted free agent, who has impressed coaches already. Both players have already begun learning from Diggs during minicamp, working on route running. Diggs has already carved out quite a career in the NFL, but he's not satisfied heading into 2025. He's overcome numerous obstacles to get to this point, and he'll face a new one this season, coming back from injury on a new team. The All-Pro receiver's ability to perform at a high level and lead a young offense will be critical for the Patriots to find success and growth in 2025. Who will finish last in the AFC East in 2025?
The Buffalo Bills have cruised in the AFC East in recent years and hope to continue that in 2025. According to most sportsbooks, that's set to continue as Buffalo remains the favorite to win the division next season. That would be the team's sixth-straight AFC East crown. But it's never as cut and dry as that. The Bills will have to handle their business in the division. The New England Patriots, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins will have their say in their of who wins the AFC East. Flipping those odds on its head, who is the team that's most likely to finish in the basement of the division? Bleacher Report give their take. Despite the Patriots and Jets hiring new coaching staffs led by Mike Vrabel and Aaron Glenn, respectively, B/R sees those teams hitting the ground running. Meanwhile, that's bad for Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel who is likely entering next year on the hot seat... especially in a scenario like this. B/R's breakdown on the Dolphins potentially as the AFC East's worst team in 2025 can be found below: Even though the New England Patriots and New York Jets have new coaching staffs, which always brings a level of uncertainty, the Miami Dolphins have glaring question marks that could become flaws in a bottom-out year. The Dolphins' pass defense is a significant concern, particular at cornerback. Miami acquired three-time All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick from the Pittsburgh Steelers in the blockbuster trade that involved cornerback Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith. Fitzpatrick can play both safety positions and slot cornerback, but the secondary is vulnerable on the boundaries without clear-cut starters on the perimeter. Edge-rushers Jaelan Phillips and Bradley Chubb are working their way back from significant injuries. The former partially tore his ACL last September, and the latter missed the 2024 season because of a torn ACL, meniscus and patellar tendon. Defensive lineman Zach Sieler has recorded 10 sacks in back-to-back campaigns. As he's made a name for himself in the pass rush, though, opposing offensive linemen may double-team him until Chop Robinson consistently wins one-on-one matchups on the outside. Tua Tagovailoa understands that he must protect himself in the pocket. The oft-injured quarterback has missed at least four games in four of five seasons. In 2023, he played in all 17 games and made the AFC Pro Bowl roster. His availability could be the difference between a 10-win season and a team that finishes with a sub-.500 record in back-to-back years. Based on Tagovailoa's injury history, backup Zach Wilson could start in multiple games, and his poor accuracy (57 percent career completion rate) would hinder the Dolphins' aerial attack. Miami finishes with seven or eight wins, and head coach Mike McDaniel's job security will come into question at the end of the campaign.

Patriots' UDFA Earns Special Honor From Louisville Mayor for Community Outreach
Patriots' UDFA Earns Special Honor From Louisville Mayor for Community Outreach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New England Patriots' training camp is right around the corner. But before that gets started, one of the newest Patriots' players took time to impact his local community. Advertisement Safety Josh Minkins Jr. went undrafted in the 2025 NFL Draft and signed with the Patriots. Minkins played football at Ballard High School in Louisville, Kentucky, and stayed home to play college ball with the Cardinals. The local product redshirted his freshman year at Louisville and then played three years with the Cardinals, collecting a career-high 55 tackles, two TFLs, and a sack in his sophomore season. For his senior year, he transferred to Cincinnati, where he finished his college career with 45 tackles, and career-bests two interceptions, four passes defended, and a fumble recovery in 2024. Josh Minkins Jr. came to the Cincinnati Bearcats from Louisville. The redshirt senior safety is 6-foot-2 and 200 pounds. Now with the Patriots, Minkins will begin training camp in 10 days. But, in the meantime, he returned home for his fourth annual free skills and drills camp on July 5. Minkins hosts the camp at his high school for kids ages 5-17 to come out and have fun running drills with the now-professional football player. Advertisement "I think the biggest ultimate goal is just for the kids to have fun and just come out here and just you know, have a good time and everybody to leave with a smile on their face," Minkins said. "That's my biggest goal." Minkins saw great attendance at his fourth annual camp for the youth of his hometown, with 500 kids from the area participating. In attendance also included Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. In a gesture to show appreciation for the undrafted free agents' impact in the community, Greenberg surprised Minkins by officially declaring July 5 "Josh Minkins Jr. Day" in the city of Louisville. Now, Minkins will get prepared for training camp as he looks to compete for a roster spot on the Patriots. Whether the city of Louisville will see Minkins playing on Sundays or not, the hometown hero has already made his impact.
