As Hart questioned about intent and group message, he appears to shift responsibility onto Michael McLeod in the 2018 Hockey Canada assault trial

Carter Hart, testifying as a defense witness in the high-profile 2018 Hockey Canada sexual assault trial. This was pressed by Crown prosecutors over his actions and decisions on the night of the alleged assault. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now During questioning, Hart admitted to replying to a group text from teammate Michael McLeod that invited players to his hotel room. Hart responded affirmatively, though he claimed he believed the invitation was meant specifically for him. The message was sent to the entire team and suggested a planned sexual encounter. Despite that, Hart stated he didn't interpret it as a group proposition, he also conceded he never asked about the woman's age. Also, her sobriety or interest before arriving at the room. Hart's memory gaps raise more questions than answers Hockey Canada trial: Carter Hart called to testify During the proceedings, Hart was unable to recall key details from that night. He admitted to drinking and being hopeful for sexual encounters, though he claimed not to have fully decided on participating when he responded to the message. When asked about McLeod's clothing at the scene, Hart gave conflicting answers. When asked if he trusted McLeod to arrange something appropriate, Hart simply said yes. This remark seemed to shift responsibility. This suggests McLeod played a leading role in organizing the encounter. He could not explain why he tried to bring more players into the room, particularly Dante Fabbro, other than to give the woman a reason to stay. Read more: Hart's testimony, while defensive, opened new lines of inquiry and potentially placed greater scrutiny on McLeod. The trial continues as the court works to unravel what truly occurred that night in the London hotel room.

Devils' Winger Signs Multi-Year Contract In Switzerland

The 2024-25 season wasn't always easy for veteran winger Tomas Tatar. In his first stint with the New Jersey Devils, he found success on the team's top line, playing with Nico Hischier and Dawson Mercer. He potted 20 goals and 48 points and was an asset to the Devils. Advertisement His second stint was a bit more challenging. Under head coach Sheldon Keefe, Tatar spent the majority of the season in the bottom six and found himself scratched at certain points. "(It was) tough," he said during his exit interview. "Definitely played a different role than I am used to. The role was not to be productive but to help the team gain momentum. So, something very new for me." Appearing in 74 games, Tatar scored seven goals and collected 17 points. "It was challenging, for sure, but for this group, I was willing to do no problem," Tatar said of embracing his new role. "Obviously, I have lots of friends, and I do really like it here. That is why I came back to try to help the team." Advertisement Understanding that Tatar, 34, was set to be an unrestricted free agent, many were not expecting him to return to New Jersey. On Tuesday, his future was confirmed as he has signed a two-year contract in Switzerland with EV Zug, the National League club announced on Tuesday. "With his enormous experience from almost 1000 NHL games and his game intelligence, he is an important reinforcement for us at center," said Zug GM Reto Kläy. "In recent years, Tomáš has regularly played on the wing. With us, he will be used as a center." The veteran has appeared in 927 NHL games, playing for the Detroit Red Wings, Vegas Golden Knights, Montreal Canadiens, Devils, Colorado Avalanche, and Seattle Kraken. Devils Should Target Brad Marchand In Free Agency

Certain NHL players are despised when playing against them but loved and adored as a teammate, and no player fits this mold more than 37-year-old Brad Marchand. After appearing in 1090 NHL games with the Boston Bruins and eventually earning the captaincy, the organization traded him to the Florida Panthers ahead of the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline. Advertisement While the left winger is solely focused on the Eastern Conference Final and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, hockey fans and media speculate where the 2011 Stanley Cup Champion will sign when free agency opens in July. The New Jersey Devils should be one team that inquires about the veteran. Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-Imagn Images The Basics Marchand's salary cap hit in 2024-25 was $6.125 million. Adding another Stanley Cup to his resume could increase his overall value, but keeping his age in mind, his next contract could very well be his last in the NHL. For sentimental reasons, it makes sense that he returns to Boston to conclude his career in the city that drafted him in 2006. If the Panthers earn their second consecutive Stanley Cup, it is plausible that Florida will look to keep Marchand in the Sunshine State. It is worth noting that the Panthers' other unrestricted free agents include Sam Bennett and Aaron Ekblad. Advertisement Those interested in the Devils' current salary cap situation can click here. Why He Needs To Be A Target For The Devils It is no secret that the Devils need to re-examine and alter their forward group this summer. General manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed his roster will look different in September because the group he had "wasn't good enough." Scoring outside New Jersey's core forwards was inconsistent, and it was one of the team's most significant concerns leading into the postseason, as well as one of their downfalls in the first round against the Carolina Hurricanes. Advertisement In the postseason, the Devils primarily utilized Ondrej Palat as their top left winger and Erik Haula on the second line. Marchand's 51 points in the 2024-25 regular season was more than Palat (28) and Haula (21 points) combined. In addition to providing much-needed offense, Marchand plays with a particular style of grit and physicality, becoming an actual pest to the opposition. The veteran checks a lot of boxes and could bolster New Jersey's middle-six and play up the lineup if needed. There Will Be A High Demand For Marchand If the Devils are interested in the former Bruin, they won't be the only ones. Marchand is valuable on and off the ice and would be an asset to any locker room. Advertisement The players in the Panthers' locker room quickly embraced him, and in the postseason, Marchand has been a factor, collecting 12 points in 14 games. After the trade deadline, Fitzgerald acknowledged he was runner-up for one player he sought after. "You are in a fight into the 12th round," he said. "I don't want to say a knockout punch, it was a split decision. A player went to a different team. It was difficult, but that happens. You win some, you lose some. My goal from the get-go was to add to this group, and the player that I went after hard was that player, with or without Jack (Hughes). We were still trying to add that. We came in second." Securing Marchand would immediately improve head coach Sheldon Keefe's roster and positively impact New Jersey's on-ice performance. While no one will know what will happen in free agency, one thing for sure is Fitzgerald can't afford to come in second this summer when New Jersey expects to make the playoffs and put together a run.
