Gavin James on Kneecap, TikTok, playing Van Halen on the tin whistle and sharing his love for Dolly Parton and Lizzo
The acclaimed Irish singer songwriter was in an energetic mood ahead of his upcoming Wexford gig New Ross Standard Although a proud Dubliner, Gavin James is no stranger to the sunny South East. Growing up, he spent most summers in south Wexford on family holidays in a mobile home but next weekend, along with his guitar and well-travelled band, he promises to build on the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann excitement building up around the town when he appears at the Breakwater Festival. On a recent advance trip to Wexford ahead of his concert, Gavin fondly told of how he enjoyed spending time with his cousins during the summer months, which would later turn to a trip on the train with a 'cheeky crate of beer' in tow and being surrounded by a few good friends having the craic on 'sofas from the 90s that look like seats on Dublin Bus' – with no mobile phones, of course.

Augustinian church in New Ross in danger of falling into ‘further decay' unless council takes action
New Ross Standard Today at 20:00 The Augustinian buildings in New Ross should not be allowed to fall into 'further decay' according to local councillor John Dwyer. Speaking at the June meeting of the New Ross Municipal District (NRMD) Councillor Dwyer said the council needed to use whatever powers it had to preserve the buildings. 'The Augustinian building and the stone pathway has been closed permanently, I understand there may be sensitivities over the land ownership but we have to tackle the dereliction that's there – and not just by putting up hoarding,' he said. Describing the buildings as a 'spectacular part' of New Ross, Cllr Dwyer said the steps there were currently in a 'disgraceful condition'. "We need to use our powers under the Derelict Sites Act to ensure that the steps and the entrance are protected, and that the buildings are not allowed to fall into further decay,' he added.

New Ross children collect book bags at local library
New Ross Standard The librarians at New Ross Library have had lots of little visitors recently, as the My Little Library Book Bag has become increasingly popular among children taking the big leap into their new primary school setting this September. The bags available from the library are free for every child starting school in 2025, aged four to six, and the contents are chosen carefully to help children navigate starting school, with books and resources for parents and children. Children and their parents or guardians can collect the bags at New Ross Library, or any public library, and the bags and contents are also available as Gaeilge. 'We hope that once you visit the library to pick up their book bag, you and your family will come back regularly to keep their bag filled up with borrowed books and to take part in the wide range of children's events we have to offer at the library,' said the librarians. The New Ross Library staff, Thomas, Caroline, Emma, Frances and Lucija, are looking forward to the children dropping in to collect their free book bags and begin their library membership journey.
