Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts is day-to-day after injuring his left toe in mishap
James Schiano breaks down outfielder Juan Soto's poor form with the New York Mets this season, questioning whether his performances are affected by the pressure of the mega contract he signed with the team. LOS ANGELES — Mookie Betts is out of the Los Angeles Dodgers' lineup against the New York Yankees with an injured left toe. Manager Dave Roberts said Friday that the shortstop was having X-rays and is day-to-day. Roberts said Betts 'stubbed his toe, not exactly sure how' after the Dodgers returned from their road trip. 'It's just kind of an accident.' 'I feel confident saying it's day-to-day,' Roberts added, 'but putting on a shoe today was difficult for him.' The manager said Betts was available to pinch hit in the series opener against Aaron Judge and the Yankees in the rematch of last year's World Series, won by the Dodgers. Betts' mishap was reminiscent of first baseman Freddie Freeman slipping in the shower at home in April. He aggravated his surgically repaired right ankle and missed nine games. 'It just keeps coming,' Roberts said, referring to the team's string of injuries, especially to the pitching staff. 'It's Murphy's law, but yeah, this is a weird one.'

Thairo Estrada activated from 60-day IL to make Rockies debut
NEW YORK (AP) — Second baseman Thairo Estrada was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday and immediately inserted into the cleanup spot for his Colorado Rockies debut against the New York Mets. Estrada had been sidelined all season with a broken right wrist. He batted .304 (7 for 23) in five rehab games with Triple-A Albuquerque. Interim manager Warren Schaeffer thinks Estrada can provide a boost for a reeling team that was 9-47 — the worst record through 56 games of any major league club in the modern era (since 1901). 'I think it's going to be a big addition,' Schaeffer said. 'I mean, everyday second baseman. Got a lot of big league experience. The way he plays the game — hard. He takes everything seriously. He loves baseball.' The 29-year-old Estrada is a .251 career hitter with 48 home runs, 52 stolen bases and a .694 OPS in six major league seasons. He broke into the big leagues with the New York Yankees in 2019 and spent the past four years with San Francisco. A right-handed hitter, Estrada was set to bat fourth against Mets left-hander David Peterson in the opener of a three-game series at Citi Field. 'It fits there today against a left-hander,' Schaeffer said. 'Thairo's a professional hitter. For me, you can hit him anywhere in the lineup.' In another roster move, the Rockies selected the contract of outfielder Sam Hilliard from Albuquerque and he was available off the bench. Colorado outfielder Nick Martini was designated for assignment. The club optioned infielder Adael Amador to Triple-A on Thursday. 'Just shaking things up a little bit,' Schaeffer said. 'Sam brings speed. Sam brings a solid glove in the outfield. My style of baseball is putting the ball in play and running, and being aggressive.' Estrada signed a $4 million, one-year contract with Colorado in January. He has a $3.25 million salary this year and the deal includes a $7 million mutual option for 2026 with a $750,000 buyout. His wrist was broken during a spring training game in March when he was hit by a 97 mph sinker from Texas Rangers right-hander Kumar Rocker. ___ AP MLB:

New York Mets hire Lew Sherr from the US Open tennis tournament as president of business operations
PARIS -- The New York Mets are hiring the person who oversees the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Lew Sherr, as their new president of business operations. Sherr has been the CEO and executive director of the U.S. Tennis Association since 2022 and has worked there since 2010, including previously as chief revenue officer. His departure was announced by the USTA on Friday; he will remain there until the end of June, then start with the Mets in July. 'For right now, my focus is the smoothest possible transition,' Sherr said in an interview with The Associated Press at the French Open. 'But I'm hugely excited about what's happening over there. (Mets owners) Steve and Alex Cohen have made a commitment to that team that is unrivaled in sports. You see it on the field, off the field. The energy around the team. The energy around what they're trying to do for the community with their foundation. The plans for the casino and the hotel and entertainment district.' Steve Cohen is among the bidders for three casino licenses to be awarded by the New York State Gaming Commission and has been lobbying to have the state legislature reclassify the parking lots adjacent to Citi Field — also near the facility that hosts the U.S. Open — from parkland to commercial land for a gaming facility. The Mets announced Scott Havens' departure as their president of business operations on Tuesday; he was in that post since December 2023. Chief legal officer Katie Pothier, chief marketing officer Andy Goldberg, chief communications officer Nancy Elder and senior vice president of finance Peter Woll have left since November. The USTA said Brian Vahaly and Andrea Hirsch will be interim co-CEOs during a search for Sherr's replacement. Vahaly is chairman of the USTA Board; Hirsch is the USTA's chief operating officer and chief legal officer. In Sherr's time as CEO, the USTA has seen growth in tennis participation around the country, along with increases in U.S. Open attendance, sponsorships, and revenue from ticket sales and broadcasting rights. 'We've taken some big swings," Sherr said Friday, 'and thankfully, they're paying off.' Just last week, he spoke at a news conference in New York to unveil an $800 million project to update Arthur Ashe Stadium and create a player performance center on the tournament grounds. He also made significant changes to this year's U.S. Open mixed doubles event in a bid to attract top singles players, making it a two-day, 16-team competition the week before the singles brackets begin. 'It's bittersweet, in that I really have loved being part of this organization for 15 years and the opportunities I've had to do just really interesting things — and not just on the commercial side, but in terms of helping us think about growing the sport,' Sherr said. "I'm leaving sleeping well at night, knowing (the USTA) is going to be well looked-after.' ___ AP Baseball Writer Ronald Blum in New York contributed. ___
