Montreal man pleads not guilty to murder charge in daughter's death
The Montreal man facing a murder charge in New York state in the death of his nine-year-old daughter has pleaded not guilty and will remain in custody until his next court appearance later this week. Luciano Frattolin was represented by the Essex County Public Defenders Office and remanded to Essex County Jail until Friday at 1 p.m. eastern daylight time. Frattolin was arrested on Monday, with New York State Police announcing later that the 45-year-old had been charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a corpse in connection with the death of Melina Frattolin. The two had been in the U.S. since July 11, visiting Connecticut and New York City before heading to upstate New York on Saturday. New York State Police Capt. Robert McConnell told reporters a man reported his nine-year-old daughter missing on Saturday from the area of Exit 22 of I-87 in Lake George, N.Y., possibly due to an abduction. Story continues below advertisement 'His initial report (was that) as he steps away to a wooded area, returns (to) the vehicle, and at that point, his child is gone from the vehicle. He reports a suspicious white van fleeing the scene southbound during a subsequent interview. He then reports two unknown males forced her into a white van.' What happens now? Hank Idsinga, a former homicide detective with the Toronto Police Service, told Global News there are treaties that allow co-operation between police services on both sides of the border for investigations like this. He said investigators will potentially look at Frattolin's residence, social media, computer and cellphone downloads and even cellphone records. 'You really want to rebuild the last 24, 48 hours of the suspect's life and a victim's life and have it ready to go for court,' Idsinga said. Story continues below advertisement Idsinga said New York police would need to rely on authorities in Montreal, however, to conduct any investigative steps in the city, as they have no power to do so. McConnell told reporters that while he can't speak to the prosecution, he said Frattolin would be charged and prosecuted in the state. Canada and the U.S. have an extradition treaty allowing for one country to extradite a person to the other based on a request. According to Idsinga, the 'only possibility' of Frattolin being returned to Canada would be to serve a sentence. 'But that's pretty unusual as well when it's an American-Canadian type of scenario,' he said. — with files from Global News' Kevin Nielsen, Touria Izri and Marc-Andre Cossette.

New York Man, Charged For 9-Year-Old Daughter's Murder, Reported Her Missing
A man whose 9-year-old daughter was found dead in a wooded pond after he reported that she had been abducted while they were they were vacationing in upstate New York was charged Monday with murder. Luciano Frattolin, 45, of Montreal is charged with murdering and concealing the corpse of his daughter, Melina Frattolin, according to New York State Police. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf at his arraignment Monday, according to court officials. The public defender's office assigned to defend Frattolin did not immediately respond to phone and email requests for comment from The Associated Press. Luciano Frattolin called 911 Saturday night and later told authorities his daughter had been abducted from a parking lot near Lake George, a resort town in the Adirondack region, authorities said. That led officials to issue an Amber Alert overnight to enlist the public's help in finding her. But authorities said there were inconsistencies in the father's account, and that they concluded there was no evidence she had been taken. Frattolin initially said he could not find his child after he stepped out of a wooded area at a parking lot near Lake George. 'During a subsequent interview, he then reports two unknown males forced her into a white van,' New York State Police Capt. Robert McConnell said. 'That lead was thoroughly investigated and disproven.' Surveillance video shows the father and daughter in another nearby resort town, Saratoga Springs, at about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The girl spoke on the phone with her mother about an hour later and did not indicate she was under duress, police said. Police believe Frattolin killed the girl after the phone call and before he made the 911 call. Forest rangers found the girl's body on Sunday afternoon in the shallows of a pond about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of Lake George, in Ticonderoga, authorities said. The criminal complaint said Frattolin concealed her body under a log. An autopsy has been scheduled. Police said the father and daughter had been vacationing since July 11 in the US and were expected back in Montreal that weekend. The girl lived in Montreal with her mother, who has been estranged from Luciano Frattolin since 2019, police said. Frattolin did not respond to requests for comment sent via LinkedIn, Instagram and his company website over the weekend. He described himself as a 'loving father' on his Instagram profile, and on the website of a coffee company said to be founded by him, a post says that his daughter Melina is 'the light of his life.' Police said Frattolin had no prior criminal or domestic violence history.

Canadian father arrested for murder of 9-year-old daughter found dead near Lake George after reporting her missing
A Canadian man has been arrested for the murder of his 9-year-old daughter, just days after he reported her missing while the two were vacationing in New York's Adirondack region. Luciano Frattolin , 45, is now in custody following the discovery of his daughter, Melina Galanis Frattolin's body in a wooded area near Lake George over the weekend. The chain of events began late Saturday, July 19, when Frattolin called 911 from a rest area near Exit 22 off the I-87 in the popular upstate New York vacation spot of Lake George. He reported that Melina had been kidnapped by two men in a white van, prompting New York State Police to issue an Amber Alert . Frattolin claimed the van was heading south on the interstate. Responding to the alert, multiple agencies, including K9 units, aviation support, and forest rangers, launched an intensive search. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top Most Expensive Luxury Cars - Nobody in Sichon Has One! Undo However, within hours, inconsistencies began to emerge in Frattolin's story. Investigators could find no evidence to support the reported abduction. After analyzing surveillance footage, timelines, and physical evidence, police dismissed the kidnapping theory. On Sunday morning, the Amber Alert was canceled, and the case quickly shifted direction. By Sunday afternoon, authorities had located Melina's body in a wooded area along Route 74 in Ticonderoga, about 15 miles east of Lake George and close to the New York-Vermont border. Her remains were discovered in a shallow, swamp-like pond. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Live Events Frattolin was arrested early the following morning and booked into the Essex County Jail on charges of murder and concealment of a human corpse . At his initial court appearance in Ticonderoga Town Court, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf, and he remains held without bail. During a press briefing, New York State Police Captain Robert McConnell confirmed that Frattolin had "fabricated the initial report of the abduction" and was now the sole suspect in Melina's death. McConnell stated that investigators believe the child was killed sometime Saturday evening, shortly after speaking with her mother by phone to say she and her father were heading back to Montreal following a 10-day road trip through New York and Connecticut. Melina's mother, who had been estranged from Frattolin since 2019, reportedly had no objections to the trip and was in regular phone contact with her daughter. She told officers that the call Saturday night was typical and raised no red flags. Canadian authorities are closely coordinating with their American counterparts as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released the official cause of death, pending a full autopsy report from the medical examiner. Law enforcement officials emphasized that the incident was isolated and posed no ongoing threat to the public. 'This is a profoundly tragic and disturbing case,' said Captain McConnell. 'Our deepest sympathies are with Melina's family and community. We are committed to ensuring justice is served.' A scheduled press conference was held in Latham, New York Monday morning, where state officials reiterated that all investigative leads now point to Frattolin acting alone. No other suspects are being sought.
