Newcastle United Women 1 Middlesbrough Women 1
The Lasses took on Boro at the home of Newcastle Blue Star on Wednesday in a fixture which allowed Newcastle to build up their minutes ahead of the 2025/26 WSL2 campaign. New signing Jordan Nobbs was handed her first start, while Małgorzata Grec came off the bench in the second half and summer arrivals Molly Pike and Aoife Mannion also featured. United dominated the ball throughout the game, with the opening exchanges being played in Boro's half, and the early pressure paid off. Freya Gregory, who looked a constant threat down the left-hand side, whipped in some dangerous crosses, including one towards the back post for Pike. Newcastle's second signing of the summer was on hand to cushion a technically impressive first-time volley into the opposite top corner. The tier-three side found a way back into the game late on when Millie Bell headed home from a Grace Boyes cross. The game offered a great opportunity for six of the club's Under 21 players - Ava Chapman, Ella Baker, Rose McCarthy, Amelia Freeman and Molly Wilson - to get minutes with the first team after coming on midway through the second half. Newcastle United Women: Claudia Moan (Hannah Hawkins), Charlotte Wardlaw (Rose McCarthy), Deanna Cooper (Małgorzata Grec), Aoife Mannion (Amelia Freeman), Freya Gregory (Ella Baker), Jordan Nobbs (Emily Murphy), Elysia Boddy (Ava Chapman), Emma Kelly (Lois Joel), Lia Cataldo (Jasmine McQuade), Molly Pike (Lily West), Beth Lumsden (Molly Wilson)

Kelly: 'I've enjoyed starting fresh this pre-season'
Kelly, who's going into her third season in black and white, has been involved in all of the club's pre-season sessions and camps in Marbella and Munich this summer - a far cry from her frustrating start 12 months ago. Newcastle United Women's number eight was struck down with sesamoiditis - an injury that saw a bone in her foot become worn down - before the previous pre-season began, with the midfielder admitting she may have pushed herself too hard. "I'm feeling really good," Kelly told "It was really hard for me last season, and I felt as though I had no luck whatsoever, but I've enjoyed starting fresh this pre-season. "Everyone always wants to come into pre-season the fittest they can be, which is why we work so hard behind the scenes, but maybe I did a bit too much as I suffered from sesamoiditis. "It showed that I was basically doing too much repetitive running and had worn down the bone inside my foot, and that was a huge setback for me." The former England youth international managed to work her way back to full fitness before the end of 2024 and started United's first two wins in the Women's FA Cup against Middlesbrough Women and Nottingham Forest Women respectively. However, the joy of getting minutes under her belt and being in the starting line-up quickly evapourated following a 'silly tackle', meaning another long road to recovery. "I managed to get myself back fit before Christmas, and I remember having a conversation with Becky (Langley) just before the Forest game," she added. "They were a bit reluctant to play me, but I told them I wanted to be involved to help me get back to full fitness and help the team, but unfortunately I ended up injuring my ankle ligaments. "The injuries were ones I felt as though I couldn't really control; the one against Forest was just a silly tackle. Looking back on the season now, clearly it just wasn't meant to be my season." It's been a summer of change for the Lasses, who've added five new players this summer - Jemma Purfield, Molly Pike, Jordan Nobbs, Aoife Mannion and Małgorzata Grec - as well as going on two training camps abroad, which provided valuable minutes and experience. Testing themselves against the Frauen Bundesliga champions, Bayern Munich Women, was a big moment for Newcastle - but also a nervy one for Kelly, she explained. "It was an amazing feeling (playing for Newcastle once again), but I was quite nervous going into the game because I couldn't remember the last time I played in a competitive match," she said. "The girls we've signed brought an abundance of energy and experience to the group, and they're all excellent characters who I know will improve the group we already had here." With Munich now behind Kelly and her team-mates, all eyes are on the remainder of pre-season - most notably a return to St. James' Park, just over four months since their last outing in front of a 38,502-strong crowd against rivals Sunderland Women. This time, Newcastle will take on Victor Martin's Atlético Madrid Femenino side in the Sela Cup, something which, alongside the help of her team-mates, has kept Kelly motivated and hungry while sitting on the sidelines. "When I was injured, the girls and medical team - who I never thought I'd get to know so well - were who helped me stay positive every day and pushed me through the tough times, but my team-mates have just been amazing with me since last summer," Kelly added. "Playing at St. James' Park was something which always kept me going when I was injured. So to potentially have the opportunity to get back out on the pitch this Saturday is a goosebump moment for me."

Newcastle Women cross Tyne to new home
Newcastle United Women are moving to a stadium outside the city ahead of the upcoming season. The club will play home games at Gateshead International Stadium, home of National League men's side Gateshead. The women were previously based at Kingston Park, home of Newcastle Falcons rugby club, but the move to Gateshead will allow it to use a grass pitch which is a prerequisite to playing in the Women's Super League (WSL). Newcastle's head of women's football, Su Cumming, said the change of grounds was the start of an "exciting new chapter" for the team. "The club has achieved incredible growth and success in recent years and we are putting these important building blocks in place to continue our exciting journey," she said. "We are, of course, sad to leave Kingston Park, where we have built so many memories both as a training base and home stadium." The club achieved back-to-back promotions in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, which propelled the team into the Barclays Women's Championship. The squad has its eyes on promotion again this year, but the installation of a grass pitch at Kingston Park was not possible. "We respect the needs of Newcastle Falcons and we thank everyone at the club for their support, but this is the right time to make the move as we pursue a place in the WSL," said Cumming. Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon said the stadium "has a proud history of hosting top-class sporting events and with women's football now one of the fastest growing sports in the world, we're ready to build on that". Issues regarding the stadium's lease arrangements have proved problematic in the past. Last year, Gateshead were denied permission to compete in the National League play-offs because it had not been granted a 10-year licence from the council to stay at the stadium. A decade-long lease is a requirement of participation in the English Football League. Gateshead has since said a new agreement has been signed with the council which would allow it to compete for promotion in future. Follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Newcastle sign former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion
Newcastle United Women have completed the signing of former Manchester United defender Aoife Mannion. Mannion, 29, left Manchester United at the end of her contract on June 30 following four years with last season's FA Cup finalists. She follows Jordan Nobbs in dropping down from the Women's Super League to join second tier Newcastle this summer, after the WSL record appearance holder's move to the club was confirmed on Tuesday. 'It feels so good to be part of the club,' Mannion said in an official Newcastle statement. 'It is clear to everybody the direction this club is going in, it's really exciting to be a part of.' The Republic of Ireland international made 55 appearances for United in all competitions after her transfer from Manchester City in 2021. She came on as a substitute in the 2024 FA Cup final to win her and the club's first major trophy, beating Tottenham Hotspur 4-0. Mannion was sidelined for 11 months while at Manchester United after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in February 2022 — the second of her career. She represented England at youth level and received call ups to the senior side without making her full debut, before switching her international allegiance to the Republic of Ireland and making her debut in 2023. She has appeared 16 times for the national side. Newcastle finished fifth in the WSL 2, formerly the Championship, last season, their first campaign in the second tier.
