Netflix probes on-set mistreatment allegations related to IU and Park Bo Gum's When Life Gives You Tangerines
When Life Gives You Tangerines, the Netflix drama starring IU and Park Bo Gum, is now under investigation following serious allegations of mistreatment behind the scenes. What started as a highly anticipated project with two of Korea's biggest stars has now sparked a much bigger conversation about how people are treated while working on TV dramas in Korea. Netflix Responds to Allegations and Currently Investigation Underway On May 28, a Netflix representative confirmed that the company is investigating the issue that raised eyebrows during When Life Gives You Tangerines set. In a statement to Korean media outlet News1, the spokesperson said Netflix is 'working closely with our Korean production partners to improve working conditions' and will 'thoroughly review the facts to prevent similar issues in the future.' Initial Accusations Spark Online Outrage The controversy was triggered by a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), where a user shared their observations of troubling behavior by the film crew. The post described an incident where industrial lacquer spray was used inside a rented bus, allegedly causing damage. When questioned, a crew member reportedly dismissed concerns, saying it could be 'cleaned off with thinner.' Claims of Unpaid Labor and Unsafe Working Conditions One individual claimed they were asked to drive for the crew due to a staff shortage, but were not compensated. They described working across three cities—Jeonju, Beolgyo, and Andong—on consecutive days without rest, proper meals, or lodging. Degrading Treatment During When Life Gives You Tangerines Shooting According to Allkpop, actors who were extras were pressured to cut their hair to fit the production's styling needs, often without proper consent, during When Life Gives You Tangerines shoot. Another individual claimed that instead of providing warm catering or tea tables, the crew took extras to random restaurants and gave them 30 minutes to eat. The costume team reportedly didn't allow thermal underwear during cold weather, saying it would affect how the outfits looked on camera. People who experienced this called the treatment 'inhumane.' Many have questioned how such treatment could occur despite the drama's large reported budget of 60 billion KRW (approximately USD 43.65 million). Netflix has committed to a full investigation and stated that an official position will be released once all facts are confirmed.

Lee Sun Kyun extortion case: Prosecutors seek 7-year jail term for manager as netizens voice outrage
Lee Sun Kyun was blackmailed by his 31-year-old manager after she discovered out about the late actor's dr*g abuse. Following that, she threatened him and extorted money, details of which surfaced after the actor's death in 2023. It led to an ongoing court case, where the accused was initially sentenced to 3.6 years prison. According to a May 21 report by News1, after the second trial, the court upheld the previous verdict. However, the prosecution appealed for a stricter sentence. Late actor Lee Sun Kyun 's manager, referred to as A, was accused of using her knowledge of his substance abuse to blackmail him for money. She was indicted by the 3rd Criminal Appeals Division of the Incheon District Court on charges of extorting 300 million won from the Parasite star in September 2023. A scammed him by calling and saying, "Your phone has been hacked and you are being threatened, so I need money to keep quiet." After the details of cyberbullying and swindling came to light, a case was filed against A, and after the first trial, she was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months of prison. However, the prosecution argued that the time A was to serve in jail was not enough as compared to her crime. In the second trial, the court upheld the same verdict and the prosecution once again requested that the court 'overturn the verdict and sentence them according to the original verdict (of 7 years).' The attorney of the defendant requested for the sentence not be any stricter, as manager A was herself being threatened for money by an unknown person. The legal representative argued that A "made a wrong choice (money extortion from Lee Sun Kyung)due to fear" and her situation must be kept in mind before announcing the final verdict. Many netizens took to the discussion portal theqoo to argue that 7 years prison would be too much for a crime of that sort. While others expressed their frustration, stating that a lighter sentence was being given to A due to her gender, which was improper.

K-Pop Band Just B Member Bain Comes Out as Gay as He Makes Announcement During Group World Tour
Bain, a 23-year-old member of the K-pop group Just B, publicly came out as gay during a concert in Los Angeles this week. Bain was performing solo when he made the shocking announcement during the final stop of Just B's Just Odd World Tour at the Vermont Hollywood Hall. "Tonight, I'm gonna share something with you guys," he is seen saying in a video clip that soon went viral on Instagram. "I'm f***ing proud to be a part of the LGBTQ+, as a gay person. And shout out to my queen Lady Gaga, showing me that being different is beautiful," the singer added as the entire crowd listen to him. Bold Announcement Bain, whose birth name is Song Byeong-hee, shared a heartfelt message, saying, " Anyone out there who is part of the LGBTQ+, or still figuring it out, this is for you guys, and also this is for everyone: You're seen, you're loved and you are born this way." He then performed Lady Gaga's 2012 hit "Born This Way", a song that quickly became a celebrated anthem for the LGBTQ+ community during the national conversation about same-sex marriage in the United States. Bain's revelation was met with cheers and applause from the crowd, along with heartfelt support from his fellow band members. Siwoo, one of the six members of Just B, shared with South Korean outlet News1 that he was brought to tears during Bain's performance. "I know how hard it was for him, and that made me want to cry more," he said. Just B was formed by Bluedot Entertainment in 2021. In just four years it has released five EPs and 11 singles, including three stand-alone tracks. While homosexuality is legal in South Korea, same-sex relations between military personnel is banned, and the government does not recognize same-sex marriage or civil partnerships. Coming Out in the Open In the K-pop industry, personal relationships of artists are typically kept private, regardless of their sexuality. In the past, it was even reported that some talent contracts included "no dating" clauses. However, more K-pop idols have been coming out in recent years, such as Lara Raj of Katseye, who publicly came out just last month. "I knew I was half a fruitcake when I was like eight, so I really was wanting everybody," said Raj, an Indian American. "Honestly probably before eight. Isn't half a fruitcake such a good way to explain it without saying it?" In 2020, K-pop singer Jiae announced she was bisexual and in a relationship with a woman, a year after her former girl group WA$$UP disbanded, where she first shot to fame. The artist often labeled "the first openly gay K-pop idol" is Holland, who chose his stage name as a tribute to the Netherlands — the first country to legalize same-sex marriage. Holland shot to fame in 2018 with the release of his self-funded debut single, "Neverland", which featured a music video that soon went viral for showing him sharing a kiss with another man.
