Storm leaves more than 9,000 without power in Horry, Georgetown counties

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Nearly 9,300 Horry Electric Cooperative and Santee Cooper customers are without power after a strong storm moved across the Grand Strand shortly before 7 p.m. The bulk of the Santee Cooper outages are in the Carolina Forest area, according to the utility's online outage map. There are also outages near Litchfield and Pawleys Island in Georgetown County and north of Bucksville in Horry County. The Horry Electric outages are spread across the county. The storm, which generated a brief tornado warning in southeastern Robeson County before trekking toward the Grand Strand, also knocked down some tents in downtown Myrtle Beach, where setup was underway for the Carolina Country Music Fest, which is set for June 5-8. Numerous trees were also reported down across the region. This is a developing story. Count on News13 for updates. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. ‘Is this right?': South Carolina couple in disbelief after $100K lottery win

EFFINGHAM, S.C. (WBTW) — A South Carolina couple didn't fully believe that they had won the lottery until a winning check was in their hands. The wife told South Carolina Education Lottery officials that she checked the Powerball ticket first, but made her husband double check when she realized all but one number matched, asking him, 'Is this right?' He bought the ticket at the On The Go on Alligator Road in Effingham and thought it was likely a big winner. 'We were still anxious,' the wife said before turning the ticket in, thinking it was too good to be true. When lottery officials verified that their ticket was a $100,000 winner, they were finally convinced. 'I can't believe how people must feel when they hit the big one,' the wife added. On The Go was rewarded a $1,000 commission for selling the ticket. The odds of matching four white ball numbers and the red Powerball number are 1 in 913,129. * * * Jordan White is a Digital Producer at News13. She joined the News13 team in August 2024. Weather halts search for missing boater in Georgetown County; deputies say crews will resume looking on Friday

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (WBTW) — Authorities plan to resume searching Friday for a Waccamaw River boater who disappeared 10 days ago after leaving The Reserve Marina in Pawleys Island, the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office said. Kerry Van Arsdel of Indiana left the Georgetown County marina on May 19, and employees found his unmanned vessel — a 41-foot blue and white sailboat named Harmony — several days later near Butler Island, miles away from the docks. The sheriff's office and the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources halted their search Thursday afternoon after bad weather forced crews back to the shore, but they plan to begin looking again on Friday Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 843-546-5102. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13.
