Judge to decide whether woman and ex-boyfriend, accused of hiding girl's body, should have separate trials

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — It's up to a judge whether a woman and her ex-boyfriend will face either a joint or separate trial on accusations she murdered her five-year-old daughter, then hid the body with his help. Latasha Mott and Corrice Parks appeared together in Onondaga County Court on Thursday morning. Mott is accused of beating her daughter to death and dumping her body in a field in Syracuse's Salt Springs neighborhood. Parks, her boyfriend at the time, is accused of helping hide the body. The girl's body was found more than a year ago after family members noticed she was missing. In court, the judge ruled on several key legal decisions that had been previously debated. Judge Matt Doran decided that verbal evidence obtained through police interrogation can be used against Parks. Parks' defense attorney argued it was improperly obtained and that police violated the required Miranda rights. The prosecution argued a narrow 'emergency doctrine' was invoked, which allows police to question someone in the event of an emergency, like a missing child in this case. The next debate is whether to hold separate trials for Mott and Parks. The judge could decide when both are back in court in June. Onondaga County Court Judge Matt Doran allowed NewsChannel 9 to record the court proceeding. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Uber admits error in Syracuse rideshare pickup incident

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV)—A Facebook post describing a disturbing rideshare incident in Syracuse has gained a lot of attention. The Syracuse Police Department has opened an active investigation, and Uber sent NewsChannel 9 a former response. In the post, the author claimed that she and four friends were picked up by a rideshare driver after celebrating a birthday, only to be taken to an unfamiliar location. According to the post, the driver refused to let the group out, which led the driver and the five friends to argue with each other until they were eventually brought to the correct location. Syracuse Police say they met with the women involved around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, May 23, and a formal report was filed. The department says there is no evidence of criminal behavior and no credible threat to the public, but the investigation is ongoing. Uber later confirmed to NewsChannel 9 that one of the women in the group had requested a ride, but the group apparently entered the wrong vehicle of a different Uber driver. 'This report is alarming,' an Uber spokesperson said. 'Riders should always match important trip details, like the license plate, make and model of the vehicle, and driver's name with the app before they enter the vehicle.' The company also pointed to several safety features built into the Uber app, including: An emergency button with 911 integration Real-time trip tracking and sharing RideCheck alerts for unexpected stops or possible crashes On-trip safety reporting Live assistance from safety agents via ADT Audio recording and GPS tracking during trips Syracuse Police continue to investigate and encourage anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Billy Joel cancels all upcoming concerts, including Syracuse's JMA Wireless Dome performance

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Billy Joel has officially canceled the rest of his scheduled concerts, including his 2026 appearance with Sting at the JMA Wireless Dome. The 'Piano Man' singer was recently diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), according to his social media. Back in March, he had announced the postponement of the Syracuse show, originally set for April of 2025, to be rescheduled to April 10, 2026. His post then explained that Joel needed time to recover from a recent surgery and then undergo physical therapy while under the supervision of his doctors. Since then, his condition has been 'exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance,' the post read in part. Joel's doctors have instructed him to undergo physical therapy, and he has been advised to hold tight on any performances while he recovers. 'I'm sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding,' said the singer. For the fans that have already purchased tickets, the post states that you don't need to take any action to receive your refund — It will be automatically processed back to the original payment used for the purchase. 'Please be aware that the refund will go to the original purchaser if the tickets were transferred to you,' said the Instagram post. The highly anticipated concerts included many shows nationwide and in the United Kingdom. Thousands of comments of support have flooded in for Joel after his announcement went public. NewsChannel 9 will update you if we learn anything else about the concert. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Your Stories Update: New traffic light installed at ‘dangerous' intersection

CLAY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The NewsChannel 9 Your Stories team is getting results. Neighbors in Clay contacted the team, fed up with a 'dangerous' intersection where crashes kept happening. It's the corner of Caughdenoy Road and Maple Road, right off exit 2 of I-481 northbound. 'What do we have to have, somebody die?' Mike Greco asked back in February. NewsChannel 9's Rachel Polansky went for a drive with Greco to see the challenges firsthand. Greco pointed out what he called blind spots, poor lighting, and confusing signs. NewsChannel 9 pulled the records. In the last two years, there have been at least eight crashes at the intersection, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office. In February, the Department of Transportation promised us they would take action and add a temporary traffic signal. Today, they kept that promise. NewsChannel 9 was there as crews got to work, installing poles and attaching lights. Neighbors hope the new traffic signal will bring relief and direction to drivers navigating the busy intersection. The NYSDOT tells NewsChannel 9 it will keep monitoring this intersection to see if a permanent traffic signal or other safety improvements should be considered. Submit a form.
