Review: ‘Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning'

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — With a subtitle like 'The Final Reckoning,' one could argue that this is the last mission for Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt. While Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie (the director of the last four) have been somewhat vague about that, it seems likely, given how this movie tries to connect the dots between all 8 films. How movies like new 'Mission: Impossible' accurately depict DoD assets In 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning,' we see the series at its most bloated, clocking in at 2 hours and 49 minutes. Admittedly, a lot of that runtime seems to be built around tying up plot threads between the films and explaining what Hunt needs to do to take down the 'Entity' — the thing itself being a riff on the dangers of AI. When the movie isn't exposition dumping or memorializing itself though, it features some audacious action set pieces. With next year's Oscars set to include a category for stunts, 'The Final Reckoning' should find itself sitting comfortably among the nominees list. The stunts are always crazy in a Mission Impossible movie, but this 8th entry ratchets them up to an even higher degree. The moments here are full of suspense, assuming that you're not to distracted by the plausibility of them. I found myself wowed by the scale of the stunts, my palms admittedly sweaty over the danger, but I also did ultimately wonder how Hunt would actually survive the encounters. There's also a matter of the characters. Each of them are there seemingly at Hunt's whim. They're not the most fleshed out group of individuals — in fact, they really blend into each other at times. This is prevalent to the point that it does make the final act feel a bit dragged out and weighed down. That act is mainly split between several things going on at the same time. It culminates into a satisfying conclusion, but getting there is a little rocky. The pacing of the film is questionable and the third act is a summation of that I'd say. That said, the final thing I'll note about this film is that it's just really cool to watch at times. The way the shadows wash over the characters or how the camera swings around a given character, either below them for a surprise Dutch angle or for an intense close up, the movie's got style. It's a long, maybe-finale to a series full of literal gravity-defying stunts and action set pieces. It's paced a little awkwardly and asks a lot of the viewer in terms of believability, but I guess all Mission Impossible movies do, so, one could argue — its consistent. Review: ‘Lilo and Stitch' is okay

Opinions are the author's alone and not endorsed by 2 NEWS and/or Nexstar Media Group. DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — For a live-action remake of a spirited animated film, Lilo and Stitch isn't horrible. To be fair it's better than most of Disney's growing catalog of said remakes. For instance, the CGI work done for Stitch and the other aliens that appear in the film is really well done. In particular, they present Stitch to a tee, despite the animation style having changed from 2D to 3D. Maia Kealoha as Lilo also works, as she brings nothing but adorable to the role. That said, not much else ends up being worthwhile. No matter the direction this remake went and no matter what changes were enacted on the original, it ultimately left me wishing to see the original instead. I won't bluff and act like I'm a 'stan' for the 2002 version — full disclosure I haven't seen the original Lilo and Stitch since I was a kid. That said, the animation from that film seemed to bounce back to the front of my mind as the remake continued. A prime example being the surfing scene where Lilo, her older sister Nani (Sydney Agudong) and Stitch all connect by being one with the waves. 'Lilo & Stich' teams with Tom Cruise and 'Mission Impossible' for a monster Memorial Day weekend In the original, it's a great moment that finally brings the three characters in sync with each other. In the remake, this scene feels a bit rushed, as if thrown in to check off a box on a long checklist of must haves. To be fair, this could be my nostalgia talking, but there's a magic in the original animation that isn't available in the remake. Cobra Bubbles, for example, brings an intimidating edge in the original animation, but in the remake Courtney B. Vance can only look the part. The character isn't given the same effort in the script and the performance of Ving Rhames just brings a different gravitas in comparison to Vance. Not to mention the animators bring so much energy to the original version of the character, all of the characters for that matter. Ultimately, the remake is passable at best. It's fine. The narrative of these remakes not living up to their original animated counterparts is a tired one, but it still applies here. It is a box-office smash though, days into its run, and it's a fun movie to see with the whole family. So, again it's not a horrible movie. Okay is okay. Runtime: 1 hour, 48 minutes. Rating: PG. Vietnam Veterans recognized in emotional tribute at special screening

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — It has been 50 years since the Vietnam War ended, leaving a lasting impact on all of those who served and their families. On Monday, April 28th, veterans and community members gathered to honor local Vietnam veterans at a special event sponsored by 18 news at the LECOM Event Center. The evening featured an early screening of 'The Vietnam War 50 Years Later', a two-part special produced by Nexstar Media Group. Nexstar sent a group of journalists to Vietnam along with Vietnam War veterans, gathering their emotional reactions as they returned to the places where they had lost friends and fought tough battles. Looking to dispose of household hazards? Chemung County hazardous waste collection coming in May Local Vietnam veteran Larry Sherman shared how impactful the documentary was. 'It's a true visualization of what these guys went through. You're getting raw emotions off this screen,' Sherman exclaimed. 'When this airs on television, anybody that's out there and sees that and still has the hatred in their hearts for any kind of Veteran need to address that,' he said. The documentary followed veterans as they revisited sites across Vietnam — places filled with painful memories, strong bonds, and battles they will never forget. Mark Sykes, another local Vietnam veteran recalled one of his most intense experiences. 'I was in Củ Chi, and I went into some of the tunnels which I never told any of my family and that's one of the most harrowing experiences you could ever have,' explained Sykes. 'Because people don't know the life expectancy of what a tunnel route was, which was three seconds, and I survived it three times,' he said. Monday's event served as a long-overdue salute to their courage, sacrifice, and service to the country. The screening ran from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and allowed the audience to experience the veterans' journey firsthand. Nicole Meholczo daughter of a Vietnam veteran, talked about the deep appreciation she has for those who served. 'My dad is my hero, I mean he's my hero. They all are, they're heroes they keep us safe,' said Meholczo. 'Look at what our world is today and it's because of guys like my dad and all these other men and women that make me able to go to bed safe at night,' she said. Valley Arts4All to return in Sayre in May Throughout the night, a strong sense of veteran brotherhood was evident. A feeling that Sherman said came through on the screen as well. 'That's the same kind of emotion that you're seeing on this screen that you get on honor flights. You're on a bus with veterans going to D.C. to visit the monuments and the stories come out,' described Sherman. 'Stories these guys haven't told in 50 years and they're willing to share it all because of vet brotherhood that's being portrayed on the screen,' he said. The event was free and open to the public, giving people a first look at the special before it airs on TV stations across the country. Donations were also accepted to support the Southern Tier Veterans' support group, with all proceeds going directly to help local veterans and their families. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
