SIBU (June 15): Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting has called on all council staff to give their full support to the acting secretary Sait Enggang, who steps into the role following the retirement of former secretary Yong Ing Chu. Ting emphasized that such cooperation is vital to maintain SMC's strong performance in service delivery and in meeting public expectations. 'I would like to welcome our new acting secretary, with whom we will be working very closely. This is particularly important as SMC undergoes a leadership transition,' said Ting during the council's 'Ngiling Bidai' ceremony, held at Permai Lake Garden Food Court on Saturday night. 'I hope everyone will extend the same support to Encik Sait as you did to Mr Yong. Without strong teamwork, we won't be able to perform as effectively,' he told the staff present at the gathering. Ting also expressed his hope that the gathering would strengthen the bond among staff and reignite their motivation to serve the people with dedication and integrity. He added that the ngiling bidai ceremony symbolised the council's unity, inclusivity, and deep appreciation for cultural heritage. Ting also conveyed his gratitude to Councillor Augustine Merikan, who chaired the event's organising committee, along with the entire organising team for their efforts in making the event a success. Chieng said this move aims to further strengthen coordination and services for the community. 'I hope we will receive good news soon,' he said when speaking at the 'Ngiling Bidai' Gawai Dayak for Sentosa, Bukit Penyau and Nanga Salim areas at a local restaurant here last night. The event was jointly hosted by N51 Bukit Assek Service Centre and Persatuan Peminat Adat Main Asal Salim Bukit Penyau Sibu. Reaffirming his commitment to the community, Chieng pledged to continue championing the 'Program Baik Pulih Rumah' (PPRMS) to help more residents improve their homes. He acknowledged that beyond infrastructure development, greater aid and attention are necessary for the community. 'I will continue to fight for increased resources from the Sarawak government to ensure that no one is left behind or neglected,' he added. However, Chieng also expressed concerns that the reviewed and expanded Sales and Services Tax (SST), set to take effect on July 1, will continue to impact the daily expenses of low- and middle-income households. 'Although the government emphasises that only non-essential goods and services will be taxed, we are all aware that in the face of rising living costs and continuous subsidy cuts, this new policy will still impact the daily spending of the low- and middle-income groups.' Chieng commended the Sarawak government for recognising the people's hardship and the rising cost of living. 'The Sarawak government has not remained idle—it has introduced various forms of assistance to ease the burden on the people,' he said. He cited the Sarawak Basic Needs Assistance (SKAS), Sarawak Senior Health Benefits (SCHB), and the yearly RM1,200 pocket money allowance for Sarawakian students attending higher education institutions nationwide as examples of the state's initiatives to alleviate financial burden. 'These initiatives prove that the state government is truly concerned and constantly striving to ensure that no Sarawakian is left behind,' he said. Also in attendance were political secretary to Premier Willam Anut, Temenggong Stanley Geramong, Pemanca Paing Tawi, SUPP Bukit Assek chairman Datuk Chieng Buong Toon, and SUPP Nangka chairman Chua Beng Seng. community leaders Dayak joseph chieng lead Sentosa

Don't adopt Peninsula's divisive culture, Dr Sim tells Sarawak political parties

Dr Sim (third left), Kevin (second left), and other dignitaries performing the Ngiling Bidai ritual. SIBU (June 14): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian cautioned political parties in the state against adopting the divisive political culture commonly seen in the Peninsula. The Deputy Premier said such practices could undermine social harmony and destabilise the political environment Sarawak has long enjoyed. 'It is crucial that Sarawak continues to preserve the political stability and harmony we have today, as it greatly benefits both the people and the government's development efforts,' he said during the SUPP Bawang Assan branch's 'Ngiling Bidai' and party's 66th anniversary celebration here today. He said Sarawak's political stability was essential for the long-term success of development initiatives. 'Our Premier has a vision for Sarawak to become the most developed state in Malaysia. That vision requires stability and unity to be realised. We must avoid the 'termites' that can weaken our foundation. Let us remain united and work together to realise this vision for the sake of future generations.' Dr Sim reaffirmed SUPP's commitment to multi-racial representation and said the party remains resilient despite the ups and downs over its 66-year history. He also reiterated SUPP's support for the state's development agenda, working closely with other component parties to maintain political stability. Touching on Bawang Assan, Dr Sim noted that the area has long lagged behind in terms of development and now needs fresh leadership to drive progress. 'In SUPP, we are fortunate to have Councillor Kevin Lau – a promising young leader we believe can help steer Bawang Assan toward greater development. 'For instance, Kevin proposed the construction of an iconic bridge to link the western banks of Sibu to the town centre; a proposal which has been approved by the Premier,' he said. Also present at the event were Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang, Bukit Assek assemblyman Joseph Chieng, Senator Robert Lau, Political Secretary to the Premier William Anut, SUPP Bawang Assan branch chairman Kevin Lau and organising chairman Johnny Ganing. divisive political culture Dr Sim Kui Hian Peninsula politics SUPP

Tiong warns against politicising community leadership appointments

Tiong is warmly welcomed by attendees upon his arrival at the Ngiling Bidai dinner last night. BINTULU (June 14): Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Dato Sri Tiong King Sing has issued a stern warning to those attempting to exploit the roles of community leaders for political gain. Tiong, who is also Bintulu MP, stressed that KMKK (Ketua Masyarakat dan Ketua Kaum) appointments are not the property of any political party, but positions entrusted with promoting social, economic, and cultural development within their respective longhouses or villages. 'The fundamental role of KMKK is to facilitate a more progressive and systematic approach to village administration and management, aimed at creating positive change within the community,' he said. He made the remarks while officiating at the Kemena Ngiling Bidai 2025 Dinner held at Dinner World Restaurant here last night. Tiong revealed that he had recently discussed the matter with the Premier of Sarawak, who reaffirmed that all KMKK appointments must follow proper procedures, uphold due process, and reflect collective decisions. 'These appointments are not the exclusive right of any party. They are a shared responsibility for the benefit of the people as a whole,' he asserted. He cautioned against any attempt to politicise KMKK roles or to use them as bargaining chips to gain political support. 'Such actions not only insult the existing administrative system but also betray the trust of the people,' he said. Tiong reminded all parties that KMKK positions are not owned by any group, but are official appointments made through a transparent and fair selection process set by the government. 'It is a responsibility to bridge grassroots communities with the government and to improve the people's well-being. Any practice of cronyism will only damage the credibility of the institution overnight,' he warned. appointment community leaders politics Tiong King Sing
