MIRI (July 30): The Orang Ulu community must remain united and proactive in preserving their cultural identity, while also tapping into the economic potential of their heritage, said Datuk Dennis Ngau. In a speech for a Ngiling Bidai (closing of Gawai Dayak) dinner hosted by Persatuan Wanita Orang Ulu Miri (PWOUM) here on Sunday, the Telang Usan assemblyman praised the association's role in championing the community's traditions and empowering women. 'As a small community in Sarawak, unity is crucial for us Orang Ulu. When we speak with one voice, we are stronger and cannot be easily side-lined,' he said. The text of his speech was delivered by Angellie Stephen Raja, a political secretary to the Premier. Dennis commended PWOUM's efforts under the leadership of chairlady Kijan Toynbee, describing the association as a symbol of solidarity among the various Orang Ulu ethnic groups in Miri. He added that cultural preservation should not only be seen as a responsibility, but also as an avenue for growth. 'Culture is not just our identity – it can also be a source of income. With digital platforms like TikTok and Shopee, we can showcase our traditions to the world while earning from them,' he said, while encouraging women to explore new skills and online business opportunities. Meanwhile, Kijan expressed her gratitude to Dennis for his consistent support of the Orang Ulu community, noting that he serves his constituency with inclusivity and fairness. 'He is not just the wakil rakyat (elected representative) for one community, he is the wakil rakyat for all. That is the mark of a true leader,' she said, urging members to continue rallying behind Dennis to bring more progress to the community. Kijan also said the Ngiling Bidai celebration was not only a tradition to mark the closing of the Gawai season but also a moment for thanksgiving, reflection, and unity. 'It reminds us how far we have come together as a community. It's a chance to give thanks for peace, harmony, and the opportunities we enjoy today.' She commended the hardworking women of PWOUM and the organising committee for the successful event, and urged everyone to continue working hand-in-hand to preserve culture, empower women, and uplift the community. 'Let walk together – for our culture, our women, our youth, and our future,' she said. The dinner was attended by PWOUM members and guests from various ethnic backgrounds, and featured cultural performances and fellowship. Also present were Dennis' wife Datin Debbie Irang and Miri Port Authority general manager Serawa Budol. cultural identity Dennis Ngau miri Orang Ulu

Abdul Karim proposes annual MySED sports carnival to promote unity

Abdul Karim (seventh right) and others carry out the 'Ngiling Bidai' ritual during the ceremony, marking the end of the Gawai celebrations. KUCHING (June 29): Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak (MySED) Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah has proposed that the MySED Sports Carnival be made an annual event, following the success of its inaugural edition. Speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today, he said the event has proven its potential and should be expanded to other major cities in Sarawak such as Sibu and Miri in future editions. 'This inaugural MySED Sports Carnival should not remain a one-off event but must be held annually and hosted in various major cities across Sarawak to further promote unity, fitness, and healthy competition among state agencies. It should only be the beginning. 'An event like this should not just be limited to Kuching every year. By rotating the host city, we allow more participation from other regions and foster closer ties between different zones and agencies under MySED,' he added when speaking during the closing ceremony of the carnival at Sarawak Sports Village today. Abdul Karim said organising the carnival annually would help instill a consistent culture of sports and wellness among civil servants while providing opportunities to engage the public through friendly competition and recreational activities. He also extended his appreciation to the organising committee led by MySED Permanent Secretary Morshidi Frederick, as well as the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC) and the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS), for successfully delivering the event. 'I believe this is something we can consider funding through existing event grants, such as those under the Ministry of Tourism, to help support and sustain it in the coming years. 'This carnival is also not only about winning or losing. It's about togetherness, maintaining good health, and creating positive energy among our agencies,' he said. He concluded by saying that sports serve as a subtle yet effective means of reminding civil servants of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially when they are no longer involved in competitive athletics. 'To those who won, congratulations. But to those who didn't, your presence and participation made this carnival a success,' he said. The MySED Sports Carnival 2025 took place from June 27 to 29 at the Sarawak Sports Village and featured four zonal teams: Kras Panthers (Southern Zone), KMSS Midforce (Central Zone), Northern Crocs (Northern Zone), and Hornbill X-Troopers (combined SSC and MSNS). The event was jointly organised by MySED, SSC, and MSNS. Also present during the closing ceremony was Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Deputy Minister Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat. PBDS gears up for next state election, eyes suitable seats based on grassroots support

Moses (fifth from left) joins top PBDS leaders in the 'bebiau' recital during the miring ceremony at the Ngiling Bidai gathering. SIBU (June 29): Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) is preparing to contest in the next state election by targeting constituencies deemed suitable, based on grassroots support and the aspirations of its members. PBDS president Mejar (Rtd) Moses Ripai said the party is in the process of identifying potential candidates who meet its internal criteria and are capable of serving the people effectively. He said this during the PBDS Ngiling Bidai gathering held at his residence in Taman Permai here last night, which was attended by over 100 members and their families. Among the senior leaders present were deputy president Julius Enchana, secretary Kipli Ayom, Selangau PBDS chief Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun, Kanowit chief Datuk Paduka Michael Lias, Saratok chief Dato Linang Chapum, PBDS Orang Ulu representative Dr Elli Luhat and PBDS Bidayuh representative Dr Bayang Teron. 'We have always remained committed to serving the people, even if our efforts are not always publicised. What we do on the ground does not need to be exaggerated, let our actions speak quietly but meaningfully,' said Moses in his address. He called on members to continue fostering unity and mutual understanding within the party, as these values are crucial to strengthening PBDS as it moves forward politically. Touching on potential collaborations, Moses said PBDS remains open to working with opposition parties, provided such cooperation is built on mutual respect and aligned with the party's core values. 'We welcome cooperation with any like-minded parties, as long as there is sincerity and respect for our principles,' he said. The event, held in conjunction with the PBDS 'Ngiling Bidai' Program, featured traditional elements such as the miring ceremony, Ngajat dance and the symbolic cutting of the 'ranyai' tree. The strong turnout by the party's top leaders was seen as a signal of PBDS' intention to revitalise its grassroots network and consolidate its position ahead of the next electoral contest. grassroots lead Moses Ripai Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak state election
