Nick Nurse unsure if Joel Embiid will be ready for 76ers camp despite ‘positive' update
The post Nick Nurse unsure if Joel Embiid will be ready for 76ers camp despite 'positive' update appeared first on ClutchPoints. Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said he is 'not sure' whether star center Joel Embiid will be ready for training camp, despite sharing an optimistic update on the former MVP's progress. Speaking to Brian T. Smith of talkSPORT during the NBA's Basketball Without Borders Europe camp in Manchester, Nurse acknowledged that while Embiid is working hard in his recovery, questions remain about his availability for the start of the 2025–26 season. 'All the news is positive,' Nurse told Smith. 'I know he's working very, very hard and I think things look good. Whether he's ready for training camp or not, I think there's maybe a lot more decisions than that to make before we get there. But our main thing is that he's healthy to play and play to his nearest capabilities, because he's awesome, no doubt about that.' Embiid, 31, appeared in just 19 games last season as the 76ers fell to a 24–58 record and missed the playoffs. It marked Philadelphia's worst finish since the 2016–17 season. The six-time All-NBA selection averaged 23.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game while shooting 44.4% from the field in 30.2 minutes per contest. The 2024–25 campaign was among Embiid's most limited seasons since entering the league, adding to a lengthy injury history. Despite those setbacks, the former No. 3 overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft has compiled an impressive résumé, including seven All-Star appearances, three All-Defensive Team selections, and two NBA scoring titles. Uncertainty surrounds Joel Embiid's health ahead of 76ers training camp Nurse's remarks follow a report last week from ClutchPoints NBA insider Brett Siegel, who wrote that 'there is a growing concern that [Embiid] will not be ready for the start of training camp,' according to league sources. 'Embiid has struggled getting back on the court this offseason,' Siegel reported. 'Although word from Philadelphia surrounding the star center continues to be optimistic, and they expect him to return to MVP form, everyone else around the league does not share the same belief.' Concerns about Embiid's long-term durability have been amplified by recent commentary from veteran Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Keith Pompey. In a segment on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Pompey speculated that Embiid's physical struggles may be weighing on his outlook for the remainder of his career. 'I think Joel may know that the end is near, and this is just me saying, and it's kind of like explaining to people what he's been going through,' Pompey said. 'Rarely do you have a guy tell you how much pain and how much they're going through.' While the organization maintains a hopeful tone, the uncertainty surrounding Embiid's health casts a shadow over the Sixers' preparations for the upcoming season. Training camp is set to begin in the fall, and no official timeline has been given for Embiid's return.

NBA & WNBA expand talent search with first UK camp
For most young basketball hopefuls, the closest they will get to learning from the sport's biggest names is by watching a YouTube video of them playing or seven Britons, this week in Manchester has been a rare shooting while being marked by Los Angeles centre Ivica Zubac to being guided by Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse, the first Basketball Without Borders camp to take place in the UK has the potential to be was at a camp like this in Latvia where Amari Williams - drafted this year by the Boston Celtics to become only the NBA's third English-born active player - was camp coming to Britain for the first time was part of the NBA's continued push to grow the following of and participation in basketball in the country. It also followed last month's announcement that the UK will host its first NBA regular-season games since 2019 with a match in London in 2026 and Manchester in 2027."We can virtually guarantee that a handful or more of the players sitting out there today will be in the [NBA and WNBA]," Nurse told BBC Sport, during the four-day camp where the Britons taking part were among Europe's 60 highest-rated teenagers."It's an amazing event, it always is. I've been fortunate enough to be a part of it before, but when they said they were coming to Manchester, I wanted to be a part of it."That's always exciting to see them at this stage, and then down the line say, 'I remember we had them in Manchester in the camp'. Always happens. It's exciting to be among the most talented young players in the world."American Nurse played in the British Basketball League for Derby Rams in the 1990-91 season, and had coaching spells at Birmingham Bullets, Manchester Giants, London Towers and Brighton Bears before rising to land NBA posts with Toronto Raptors and the event in Manchester, in which both current and former players and coaches from the NBA and WNBA were involved, is designed to help aspiring basketball stars of high school ages outside of the United States get valuable first-hand coaching and BWB camps also run across Asia, Africa and The Americas. The best performing players from the four camps combined are then selected to attend another BWB camp for the world's best young players that take place during the NBA and WNBA All-Star from all 30 NBA teams are in attendance to cast their eyes over the young hopefuls. 'A huge boost' - NBA's return to Britain Almost a decade ago, Los Angeles Clippers centre Zubac was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers having played professionally as a teenager in Serbia and his homeland is a similar path for many Europeans entering the NBA and of the camp's aims is to scout the best talents outside of the US from a young age."I never really had a chance to participate [in these camps] as a kid but I would've loved to," said Zubac, 28."I think getting advice, knowledge and experience from the NBA players, NBA coaches, all the basketball legends here, some of who have won a lot of championships, it's very valuable and I think it's going to be really helpful."NBA's 2024-25 Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is among the current stars who have attended BWB camps, as well as 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid and 23-year-old Williams.A total of 129 players who have attended the camps, including 41 currently in NBA starting teams, have gone on to play in either the NBA or Oboavwoduo, from Manchester, hopes this might happen for her too and first aiming for a US college route to help her chances. "It's pretty hard because basketball is not as big in England, but basketball is expanding in the UK," said the 17-year-old. "I'm glad I've been able to do this as an experience for exposure."Nurse believes the return of NBA matches to the UK can only help the sport grow."The NBA and the WNBA are certainly turning into international leagues. There are players from all over the world now," he said."It's a huge boost. When the NBA brings its brand and brings its star power, bringing NBA players certainly draws a lot of attention."Williams' arrival to the NBA will make him the fourth active Briton in the league alongside OG Anunoby, Tosan Evbuomwan and Jeremy Sochan, although Sochan plays internationally for are currently only two British players in the WNBA - Temi Fagbenle and Elizabeth Williams, who play for the Golden State Valkyries and Chicago Sky respectively,That is despite basketball currently being the second-most popular team sport in the UK, with one-and-a-half million participants on a weekly basis. Will WNBA games be held in UK? The topic of top-level basketball heading outside the United States comes in a week where the first WNBA game to be held internationally takes Atlanta Dream face the Seattle Storm in Vancouver, Canada, on Friday that lead to a future WNBA match in the UK?"That's always a possibility," said two-time WNBA champion Sylvia Fowles, who is also part of the BWB's coaching staff."I want to see the WNBA everywhere."It says a lot to have WNBA players here [at the camp], so hopefully it trickles down so that we can get games here - and I think would be pretty."

Uniform number for new Sixers addition Dominick Barlow revealed
The Philadelphia 76ers were able to land a capable backup big man on a two-way deal in the form of Dominick Barlow as he begins a new chapter in his NBA career. After going undrafted, Barlow landed with the San Antonio Spurs for two seasons before playing for the Atlanta Hawks in the 2024-25 season. Barlow enters Philadelphia with career averages of 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds. He showed off an ability to rebound the basketball at a high rate in the handful of summer league games he played in Las Vegas for Philadelphia. One has to wonder if coach Nick Nurse and Co. will give him a look when the season begins in October. In terms of his uniform number, Barlow will wear No. 25 for the Sixers. He wore No. 0 while with the Hawks, but of course, that number belongs to Tyrese Maxey in Philadelphia. The Sixers will look to Barlow to give them some good minutes in the dog days of the season in January and February as they move forward in hoping Joel Embiid can be healthy for when the time matters the most in the postseason. VJ Edgecombe Gets Praised By 76ers Head Coach
VJ Edgecombe Gets Praised By 76ers Head Coach originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard VJ Edgecombe has made a lasting impression on his fans, his teammates and even his coaches. Although he's only been seen in action during the NBA Summer League, Edgecombe has showcased what he can offer for the 76ers. His All-Star teammate, Paul George, went as far as to compare him to six-time All-Star forward Jimmy Butler. Advertisement In his first Summer League game, Edgecombe posted 28 points and 10 rebounds in Salt Lake City. Based only on his lone performance in the tournament, 76ers head coach Nick Nurse already expressed his admiration for the young guard. Nurse appeared as a guest on the podcast "The Hoop Collective" and had high praise for Edgecombe. Philadelphia 76ers guard VJ Edgecombe watches the game. Candice Ward-Imagn Images "Just a lot of everything," Nurse said. "First of all, incredible athlete. Does things defensively. Like, he's good defensively, but he makes plays, shot-blocker, you don't see that a lot (shot-blocking) from the wing position. Tries really hard on D. Explosive. "Looked like he's got some shimmy to get his own shot off. He's a full-court player, getting up and down in transition. And then he's an incredible person, he's really all about working really hard. Super respectful, and he's just great to be around." Advertisement Edgecombe has shown a ton of upside with the way he's played. He's only appeared in one Summer League game, as he's dealing with a left thumb sprain. Heading into the 2025-26 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers expect the former Baylor star to share the backcourt with Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 14, 2025, where it first appeared.
