Leeds United line up England goalkeeper, 33, after missing out on £18m Caomhin Kelleher transfer
LEEDS UNITED are keen on Newcastle's Nick Pope after missing out on Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher. Daniel Farke and Elland Road chiefs are already at work in their quest to strengthen following the Championship-winning promotion campaign. 3 3 And a new goalkeeper has emerged as one of their top priorities given Illan Meslier's drop in form at the back end of last season. They enquired about Irish ace Kelleher, 26, but he is poised to join Brentford for £18m. Now Leeds could turn to Pope, 33, and are one of several teams monitoring his situation at St. James' Park. The England international finished the season as Eddie Howe's No.1 but Newcastle are expected to finally end their long pursuit of Burnley's James Trafford over the coming weeks. His arrival could result in Pope heading elsewhere with a switch to Elland Road among those potentially on the cards. Pope, who won the Toon's first trophy in 70 years this term, earned just 10 England caps before missing out on Euro 2024 through injury. Trafford, who beat Pope to Thomas Tuchel's latest England squad, had agreed to join Newcastle last August only for the deal not to happen. The 22-year-old played a key role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League, keeping an impressive 29 clean sheets in 45 appearances. 3 Meanwhile, Newcastle have checked on 19-year old Rennes centre back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal who has starred for Morocco U20s. Boudlal is yet to make his senior debut for Rennes and spent the second half of the season on loan at Ligue 2 Amiens. Howe's side are also interested in Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo. Leeds will face AC Milan in Dublin in a pre-season friendly on August 9.

Leeds eye move for Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope as Magpies renew interest in Burnley's £30m-rated James Trafford
Leeds United are among the clubs keen on Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope. The England international could leave if Newcastle are successful in their renewed pursuit of Burnley 's £30m-rated James Trafford. Trafford had agreed to join last August only for the deal not to happen, much to the surprise and disappointment of some of those involved - but the move is expected to be completed this summer. The 22-year-old played a key role in Burnley's promotion to the Premier League, keeping an impressive 29 clean sheets in 45 appearances. Leeds are planning to strengthen their squad this summer following their return to the top flight, with the club keen to avoid another short-lived stay. Current No 1 Illan Meslier has come under criticism following a number of costly errors for the Whites. Leeds were one of the clubs who enquired after Liverpool's Caoimhin Kelleher prior to him agreeing to join Brentford in an £18m move. Meanwhile, Newcastle have checked on 19-year old Rennes centre back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal who has starred for Morocco U20s. Boudlal is yet to make his senior debut for Rennes and spent the second half of the season on loan at Ligue 2 Amiens. Eddie Howe's side had targeted Liam Delap and Dean Huijsen and are working through alternatives with the likes of Crystal Palace centre back Marc Guehi and Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo among the names on their list

Carabao Pups: North East shelter names puppy litter after Newcastle squad
A North East animal shelter has welcomed a litter of 11 puppies, which it has named in honour of the Newcastle United squad. Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter took to social media to share the news of the litter, revealing the pooches had been given names of Toon players who had won the Carabao Cup in March. A spokesperson for the shelter said: "We have recently had a litter of 11 puppies born on our site, as a homage to Newcastle United's Carabao Cup win this season, we have decided to name them after the starting 11 for the game!" A video attached to the post shows the pups in the arms of the shelter's workers, each named after one of the players who lifted the cup. One-by-one, pups named Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and a shy Fabian Schar flash appeared on the screen in adorable cuddliness. Nick Pope (or should that be Nick Pup?) (Image: Newcastle Dog and Cat Shelter) The shelter said: "The pups and mam are all doing amazing and as you can see, absolute bundles of cuteness! "Keep an eye on our website in the next few weeks for more information. Please keep sharing the love, it really does make all the difference." The pups have caught the attention of well-wishers and would-be adopters who have commented their preference of who they'd like to rehome and praised the staff for their good work. Karen Scouler said: "Beautiful fur babies and I love all their names, I hope that when they are all ready for their forever homes, they are well and truly loved and cared for, you all do an amazing job looking after all of the animals." Fiona Wilson said: "Wow what a line up! Absolutely gorgeous."
