BREAKING NEWS Sarina Wiegman gambles on fitness of Lionesses star as England boss names 23-player squad for European Championship defence
Sarina Wiegman has announced her 23-player squad for this summer's upcoming European Championship title defence, and the England boss has gambled on Lauren James ' fitness by including the Chelsea star in her side. The 2022 champions will travel to Switzerland to begin their campaign against Group D rivals France in exactly a month's time, before taking on Netherlands and then Wales as they look to book a spot in the knockout stages and then ultimately the final on July 27. James hasn't played since suffering a hamstring injury during a Nations League game against Belgium in April, and Wiegman said earlier this week that she is progressing 'really well'. The forward burst onto the global scene during the 2023 World Cup and has quickly become one of the Lionesses most exciting young talents, a point ratified by Wiegman's choice to include her despite her recent fitness struggles. There was a surprising call-up for 19-year-old Michelle Agyemang. The Arsenal striker, who spent this season on loan at Brighton, has only made one appearance for the Lionesses – in a 3-2 defeat to Belgium last month. Agyemang came off the bench and scored 41 seconds into her debut, but had not played in England's last two Nations League games before Thursday's announcement. Agyemang's Brighton teammate, 31-year-old Lioness veteran Nikita Parris, misses out. There will be tournament debuts for seven players. Besides Agyemang these are Manchester United's Maya Le Tissier and Grace Clinton, Manchester City's Khiara Keating and Jess Park, Chelsea's Aggie Beever-Jones, and Orlando Pride's Anna Moorhouse. The build-up to the announcement has been far from smooth sailing for the Dutch coach, with three players in Mary Earps, Millie Bright and Fran Kirby all withdrawing ahead of Thursday's announcement. Goalkeeper Earps was the first to announce her shock retirement last week after falling behind Hannah Hampton in the race for the No 1 shirt in a move which angered the England head coach, and her departure has left Hampton as the only capped goalkeeper in the squad. Then, Kirby called time on her decorated 11-year career on Tuesday night. The 31-year-old Brighton forward had been told she wouldn't make it into the squad unless someone got injured. Finally, Bright made her announcement on Wednesday, saying that she was unable to 'give 100 per cent mentally and physically' to join up. The vice-captain, who wore the armband during the 2023 World Cup, added she felt it was not 'fair to take the place' of another player if they were ready to 'give everything for the badge and country'. Concerns of a crisis within Wiegman's walls have been steadily growing, but the certainty of who has been selected should help calm things down. Leah Williamson will wear the armband once again. The Arsenal defender captained the Lionesses to glory in 2022, and is a welcome presence after missing the Lionesses' last major tournament, the 2023 World Cup in Australia, after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Another good sight for England fans is the Euros 2022 final goal scorer Chloe Kelly, who was on the fringes of making it into this squad just six months ago. After spending the beginning of this season on the bench at Manchester City, a January loan move to Arsenal has worked wonders, capped off with a Champions League trophy to show for it.

What happened in the WSL this weekend as West Ham mauling relegates London rivals
Crystal Palace were sent plummeting to an immediate Championship return as Shekiera Martinez scored four goals for West Ham United in a 7-1 rout. Elsewhere, Tottenham Hotspur's search for a first win was extended to eight games after Liverpool's Sophie Roman Haug bagged a brace to salvage a 2-2 draw in St. Helens. Nikita Parris came back to haunt Everton after firing an injury-time winner to seal all three points for Brighton & Hove Albion and a goal from Jess Park proved the difference for Manchester City against Leicester City. Martinez magic Shekiera Martinez bagged four goals as West Ham demolished Crystal Palace 7-1 to send the Eagles' straight back down to the second tier. Leif Smerud's side needed to avoid defeat to keep their place in the top flight for at least another week but were left with a mountain to climb after Martinez's first-half hattrick. The German opened the scoring with a well-timed header and doubled her tally with a precise left-footed finish into the top corner. She added a third after rounding Shae Yanez just before the interval before claiming her fourth moments after the hour mark. Viviane Asseyi then added to the rout with a chip over Yanez and though Palace pulled one back through an 80th-minute Katie Stengel penalty, Emma Harries struck twice late on to finish the job. Spurs stifled by Román Haug Tottenham Hotspur are now in search of a first win in eight games after Sophie Román Haug netted twice to spare Liverpool's blushes against Spurs in a 2-2 in St Helens. The Norwegian broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when she reacted fastest to a loose ball, only for Spurs to seize control of proceedings with two goals in five minutes. Their equailser came when Reds keeper Rachael Laws failed to secure Grace Fisk's attempted clearance and took the lead when Clare Hunt tapped home Maite Oroz's delivery. However, Roman Haug's goal in the second half ensured a point for Liverpool even as they slipped behind Brighton into sixth. Seagulls stun Toffees Nikita Parris struck in stoppage time to seal the spoils for Brighton & Hove Albion and end her side's three-game losing skid with a 3-2 win over Everton The Toffees led twice at Walton Hall Park and broke the deadlock through Sara Holmgaard in the ninth minute. Michelle Agyemang levelled the scores with a close-range finish only for her side to go behind again when Katja Snoeijs volleyed home two minutes later. Fran Kirby equalised for Brighton a minute ahead of the break with a curled finish after combining with Parris. The forward then clinched all three points for the Seagulls when she scored against her former side three minutes into stoppage time. City see off Foxes Jess Park kept alive Manchester City's Champions League qualification hopes after firing her side past Leicester City in a 1-0 win. Park was set up by Lauren Hemp, who was returning from a lengthy injury lay-off, 20 minutes left on the clock as she tapped home Hemp's low cross past Foxes No.1 Janina Leitzig. City now find themselves four points shy of neighbours Manchester United for the third and final Champions League qualification spot, though the Red Devils have a game in hand.

Nikita Parris returns to England squad but Chloe Kelly misses out
Nikita Parris returns to Sarina Wiegman's England squad for the first time since November 2022 but Chloe Kelly misses out for their upcoming Nations League fixtures against Portugal and Spain. Forward Kelly, who memorably scored the match-winner to seal England's triumph at the 2022 Euros, sealed a loan move to Arsenal in the January transfer window. She has been candid about her frustrations over a lack of playing time and situation at parent club Manchester City. Parris joined Brighton on a permanent deal from Manchester United in September and has scored four Women's Super League goals for Albion this season, also adding two assists. Chelsea duo Niamh Charles and Lauren James also return after being sidelined from England action since July and April of last year respectively. Midfielders Laura Blindkilde Brown and Ruby Mace retain their places in Wiegman's squad after making their debuts in December, but Gabby George has been dropped. England first play Portugal in the Algarve on February 21 before taking on World Cup holders Spain – who they faced in the 2023 final – on February 26 at Wembley.
