Modi in UK takes aim at Sikh separatists. ‘Must not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms'
The Indian Prime Minister added: 'On the matter of extradition of economic offenders as well, our agencies will continue to work together in close coordination and cooperation.' 'We also agree that forces with extremist ideologies must not be allowed to misuse democratic freedoms. Those who misuse democratic freedoms to undermine democracy itself must be held to account,' Modi declared while speaking to the press alongside his British counterpart Keir Starmer. New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Thursday took aim at Sikh separatists in the UK asserting that 'forces with extremist ideologies' must not be allowed to 'misuse democratic freedoms'. While the Prime Minister's statement did not directly mention them, Sikh separatists have attempted to disrupt Indian diplomatic activity in the UK, even breaking the security cordon during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to the Western European country earlier this year. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri during a special briefing prior to Modi's visit to the UK had pointed out that Sikh separatists 'impact social cohesion and social order' in nations where they are allowed to operate. There have been incidents by Sikh extremists against Indian diplomatic missions in the US, the UK and Canada in the last few years. After the incident with Jaishankar in March, India issued a stern warning to the UK, demanding action not words, as the Sikh separatists were able to break through the foreign minister's security cordon. The Ministry of External Affairs summoned British charge d'affaires Christina Scott and handed over a demarche. In March 2023, the Indian flag was detached from the Indian High Commission in London after the building was breached by Sikh separatists protesting against police action aimed at arresting Amritpal Singh in the state of Punjab. He was arrested following a manhunt, and later successfully contested the 2024 general election from Khadoor Sahib. That same year in September, Vikram Doraiswami, India's High Commissioner to the UK was prevented from entering a gurdwara in the Scottish city of Glasgow by Sikh separatists. Doraiswami had been invited to visit the gurdwara by the local community. These incidents have been some of the major irritants in ties between New Delhi and London. India has also raised the issue of the extradition of wanted fugitives who fled the country for the United Kingdom. Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya are some of the well known cases of individuals wanted by Indian authorities, who currently reside in the UK. Nirav Modi is currently lodged in a British prison, while his attempts to appeal his extradition have been rejected by the courts in the UK so far. The Indian Prime Minister is on a two-day visit to the UK from 23 July till 24 July, where he witnessed the signing of the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). The CETA is considered to be India's most comprehensive free trade agreement till date, and the most significant trade deal for London since its exit from the European Union (EU). It is India's first bilateral trade agreement with a Western nation. It will see duties removed across 99 percent of tariff lines, representing roughly 100 percent of the total value of trade for Indian exporters. The deal will see the average tariff on Indian exports to the UK fall from 15 percent currently to 3 percent. The UK has gained a number of wins in the trade deal, including seeing the tariffs on its whisky and gin exports to India halved from 150 percent to 75 percent. Within 10 years, the tariffs on such exports to India will fall by a further 35 percent. During the visit the two leaders also agreed to the India-UK Vision 2035 strategy document, which covers defence and security, technology and innovation, climate and clean energy, education, investment and growth. Modi will call on King Charles III before departing the UK for Maldives. In Maldives, the Indian Prime Minister will be the 'guest of honour' at the island nation's sixtieth Independence Day celebrations. India to expand cooperation for extraditing economic offenders: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Indian security agencies will continue to strengthen cooperation with foreign counterparts on issues related to the extradition of economic offenders. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India speak during a press conference after signing a free trade agreement at Chequers near Aylesbury, England, Thursday, July 24, 2025. (AP) 'Our security agencies will continue to enhance cooperation and coordination on matters such as the extradition of economic offenders,' he said. The statement, made during his visit to the United Kingdom, comes at a time when Indian authorities are pressing for the return of several high-profile individuals facing charges ranging from financial fraud to money laundering. These include Nirav Modi, accused in the ₹6,498 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, whose tenth bail plea was recently rejected by a London court; Vijay Mallya, wanted in connection with a ₹9,000 crore loan default case; and Sanjay Bhandari, facing charges under the Official Secrets Act and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. India has also sought the extradition of Hajra Memon, widow of underworld figure Iqbal Mirchi, along with her sons Asif and Junaid Memon, in connection with money laundering and organised crime cases. Mallya fled India in 2016 and has been residing in the UK since then. In December last year, finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman informed Lok Sabha that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had so far restituted ₹14,000 crore worth of assets to various banks through the sale of Mallya's properties. In the case of Nirav Modi, investigations have revealed that he secured his first fraudulent letter of undertaking (LoU) from PNB on March 10, 2011, and went on to obtain 1,212 such guarantees over the next 74 months. The LoUs were used to funnel money to a web of dummy companies registered in offshore tax havens, including the British Virgin Islands. Nirav Modi and his relatives fled India in early 2018, just days before the scam became public. He remains in a UK prison as Indian authorities continue to push for his extradition.

CBI court stays loan fraud case proceedings against Choksi till August 8
A special CBI court here on Friday stayed proceedings against diamantaire Mehul Choksi till August 8 in the ₹55 crore Canara Bank-led consortium loan fraud case. A magistrate court, in April, took cognizance of a chargesheet filed by Central Bureau of Investigation in the case and had issued summons to the accused, including Choksi and two former employees of Gitanjali group Vipul Chitalia and Aniyath Nair. However, their lawyers Vijay Agarwal, Rahul Agarwal and Jasmin Purani on Friday filed a revision application against the magistrate's order before the special CBI court claiming it was passed in "a mechanical manner without application of mind". The order summoning the accused has been passed with lightning speed on the same day of filing of chargesheet, without even perusing it, they claimed and sought interim relief until their plea is decided. Special Judge J P Darekar, presiding over the matter, found that the magistrate court's order does not reflect any opinion formed by it on the basis of the material in the chargesheet. It held that reasons are necessary not only for litigants but also for superior courts to know the thought process of the trial court. "The court expects at least some brief outline of the reasons which leads the trial court to form an opinion to issue summons in the case," the special judge noted. Therefore, there is prima facie error of giving no reasons in support of the order of issuance of process, the special judge said. It then stayed the magistrate court's proceeding till August 8, the next date of hearing. The court also issued notice to the CBI seeking its say in the plea. As per the CBI, Canara Bank and Bank of Maharashtra had sanctioned ₹30 crore and ₹25 crore, respectively, as working capital facilities under a consortium agreement to Bezel Jewellery. The loan was granted for the manufacturing and sale of gold and diamond-studded jewellery, but the company allegedly did not use it for the intended purposes, according to the CBI. The company did not repay the loan, causing a loss of ₹55.27 crore to the consortium, as per the agency. Choksi and his nephew Nirav Modi are prime accused in the ₹13,500-crore PNB 'scam'. While Choksi is fighting for bail in a court in Belgium, Nirav Modi has been in jail in London since 2019.
