Kim Kardashian to testify against 'grandpa robbers' in Paris trial over $9M jewelry heist

PARIS — Kim Kardashian will take the stand in a Paris courtroom on Tuesday to testify against a gang of 10 people known as the 'grandpa robbers' who are accused of stealing jewelry worth $9 million at gunpoint from her in one of the most audacious celebrity heists in modern French history. Almost nine years after the break-in at the reality star turned business mogul's luxury suite at the Hôtel de Pourtalès, an anonymous-looking building known as 'No Address' frequented by A-list celebrities, the reality star will face the suspects accused of armed robbery, kidnapping and other criminal charges. Dubbed the 'grandpa robbers' by French media because of their ages, the suspects allegedly posed as police officers before they overpowered the concierge, who was forced to act as a translator as they tied Kardashian up in the bedroom of the luxury suite. Months after the robbery made headlines, Kardashian talked about the incident during a season 13 episode of E!'s 'Keeping Up With the Kardashians.' 'My door was open like this, and then I saw two guys holding another guy down in police uniforms, but right outside of my bedroom, 5 feet away,' she told her sisters, Khloe Kardashian and Kourtney Kardashian in an emotional conversation. She said she saw the two men holding down the concierge, who was handcuffed and had a key to her room. 'What I've heard from talking to him afterward is, they said, you know, 'Where's the rapper's wife? Let us up to her room!' in French,' she said, referring to her then-husband, the artist Ye, formerly Kanye West. The episode which aired in March 2017 has been viewed 3.8 million times on E!'s YouTube channel. Ahead of the robbery, Kardashian had posted real-time updates from her hotel suite, showing off a 20-carat diamond ring, gifted to her by Ye and investigators believe the gang followed her online, combing through images, timestamps, geotags, before employing old-school criminal methods to conduct the robbery. Most of the defendants were arrested three months after the robbery as police launched a huge operation that involved piecing together security camera footage and DNA evidence. But the legal process was beset by delays and many of the aging defendants are now suffering from illnesses and one of them has since died. Another is too unwell to stand trial. Among the defendants at the trial which began last month are Aomar Ait Khedache, 69, known as 'Old Omar,' who is accused of being the plot's mastermind. His son and alleged getaway driver, Harminy, 37, has also been charged along with Didier 'Blue Eyes' Dubreucq, 69. The brother of Kardashian's driver in Paris, Gary Madar, 35, is accused of providing the alleged gang members with information about her whereabouts and 78-year-old Christiane Glotin, is accused of being an accomplice in planning the heist. Yunice Abbas, perhaps the best-known defendant in the trial who detailed the robbery in his 2021 book, 'I Kidnapped Kim Kardashian,' testified last month. He told the court it was the first time he had truly come to recognize the 'trauma' he had caused his victim.

National movie's ticket sales support non-profits addressing chronic homelessness

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — While many will be spending their weekend making sure they're caught up on all of this year's Oscar-nominated movies, there's one movie hitting screens Friday with a deeper message and some benefits for local non-profits. 'No Address' follows a group of homeless people struggling together to survive on the streets. When Rochester non-profits heard the movie was in development, they wanted to make sure the theme of the movie made its way to Rochester. 'It really takes you through this story of all these different friends coming together, finding their way through homelessness and finding solutions,' Person Centered Housing Options Executive Vice President Nicholas Coulter told News 8. Coulter says the developer of the film reached out to nonprofits nationwide to host movie premieres. That premiere sold out Thursday night at AMC Webster as moviegoers got an advanced screening. And after, a panel discussed homelessness in Rochester. 'Local folks on the ground working in this field will educate our movie goers on what kind of things they can do to collaborate and support the work we do,' Coulter said. 'No Address' stars Ashanti, William Baldwin, and Isabella Ferreira as Lauren, a girl who is kicked out of her apartment and her family's house and becomes homeless. She finds herself on the streets and ends up finding friends that she hangs out with and survives with. Coulter says he hopes those watching are moved to get involved which all starts with buying a ticket. 'The goal for Robert Craig films and 'No Address,' is that half of the proceeds go out to nonprofits.' Coulter said those proceeds will help PCHO continue to address chronic homelessness in Rochester. And if you can't make it out to the theater: 'I think staying aware of what's going on at the federal level with HUD cuts and other types of issues those affect us here on the ground. So, staying aware, being involved, calling your legislators and supporting local organizations by donating,' Coulter said. For local showtimes for 'No Address,' click here. Nonprofit hopes new movie inspires action

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A new movie about homelessness hits theaters on February 28th. But some got an early look at the film. 'No Address' is about four individuals who unexpectedly become homeless. On Thursday evening, the St. Francis House sold nearly 100 tickets for a VIP showing at the Cinemark Century East at Dawley Farm in Sioux Falls. The nonprofit hopes the new movie, highlighting homelessness, will inspire action. Rhoden on prison location: 'Everything on the table' '100% of that tonight goes to the St. Francis House,' St. Francis House CEO Julie Becker said. 'It is covering our community outreach work that we do by having staff go to the two emergency homeless shelters.' It's clear the crowd that showed up was there for more than just popcorn and a movie. 'It's just an eye-opening experience. Other situations that could happen could bring you into homelessness. Anyone is susceptible,' Jodee McMahon said. 'I think there's such a stigma with people who are homeless and movies like this help change people's ideas,' Larissa Deedrich said. Deedrich is the executive director of the Sioux Falls Housing and Redevelopment Commission. She's also seen the impact that homelessness can have on others. 'I'm hoping to take away some ideas on perhaps how we can use some of these in real life circumstances. I think it would be great if we can use this movie to educate people and let people know that homeless people are real,' Deedrich said. The St. Francis House hopes that anyone who sees the film can walk away with a new perspective. 'Maybe a renewed sense of purpose and more energy to keep going, especially in this time,' Lisa Bartell said. A silent auction is happening until Monday, March 3rd to support the St. Francis House.
