Canadiens: Potential Right-Shot Defenseman Target
The Montreal Canadiens had a good season and capped it off with an unexpected playoff appearance, but that doesn't mean the rebuild is over—far from it. To be genuine contenders, however, it may be time to acquire something besides prospects and very young players. Canadiens: Laval Rocket Falls 5-3 To The Rochester Americans Canadiens: Patrik Laine's Summer Canadiens: The Grades Are In – Juraj Slafkovsky Advertisement Numerous rumours throughout the season have suggested that the New York Islanders may be open to trading Noah Dobson. The 25-year-old, six-foot-four, 200-pound defenseman has shown what he can do in this league in the past. He has played for parts of six seasons on Long Island, for 388 games, in which he gathered 230 points and 118 penalty minutes. Apr 17, 2025; Columbus, Ohio, USA; New York Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson (8) looks to shoot against the New York Islanders during the first period at Nationwide Arena. Mandatory Credit: Russell LaBounty-Imagn Images In 2023-24, he reached a career-high of 70 points in 79 games, not far off a point-per-game pace that is quite impressive for a blueliner, but he fell back to earth this season when he could only muster 39 points in 71 games. He's just played the third year of his three-year contract with a $4M cap hit. In February, he moved from Maloney & Thompson sports management to Wasserman Hockey, where his agents will be Judd Moldaver and Olivier Fortier. The latter will be leading the way. Fortier has two players contracted with the Canadiens: Owen Beck and Joshua Roy, both of whom are ELC contracts. He's the agent who got Alexis Lafreniere a seven-year extension with a $7.45M cap hit annually. All of his clients, apart from Beck, are French-Canadians. Advertisement Interestingly, Fortier is a former Canadiens prospect. The organization drafted him in the third round in 2007, but when he realized his NHL dream wouldn't come to fruition, he gave up hockey to study law and joined Momentum Hockey, a Quebec-based agency that joined Wasserman Hockey last September. While Dobson will be an RFA soon, I think Kent Hughes would rather make a trade with the Islanders than sign the defenseman to an offer sheet. The Canadiens' GM has traded with the Isles in the past, although business must be slow for the New York outfit as the search for a new GM to replace Lou Lamoriello continues. The Canadiens currently hold two consecutive first-round picks at the 2025 draft, picking 16th and 17th. Hughes has already shown he's not opposed to trading draft picks or young talent to fill a need. Hughes sent Alexander Romanov to the Islanders in his first draft at the helm for two picks: their first-round pick (at 13 overall) and a fourth-round pick (98th overall). Hughes then flipped those to the Chicago Blackhawks for Kirby Dach in his search for the ever-elusive second-line center. Dobson's profile fits the kind of projects Hughes likes to take on, although he could be a bit more expensive, having already shown he can succeed offensively in the NHL. A smooth skater and a player with a knack for launching an attack, he spent an average of over 23 minutes on the ice this season in New York. He would make an excellent partner for Lane Hutson and immediately shore up the Canadiens' defense, especially with David Savard's departure. Advertisement Would Hughes be able to sell him a 'show me' deal like he did with Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook? Maybe, although the agency swap may mean he's looking for a longer-term deal, if there's anyone who can sell the Canadiens' rebuild to a player, it's Hughes. However, Dobson's situation is particular, as he'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season, unless he signs a long-term pact. It remains to be seen if the Isles' new management wants to move Dobson, but the offer sheet remains an option if they don't. Canadiens stories, analysis, breaking news, and more! The Islanders Winning The Draft Lottery Makes Their Next GM's Path To Success Much Clearer
J.G. Pageau, Noah Dobson and Anders Lee (Robert Edwards-Imagn Images) After not renewing the contract of GM Lou Lamoriello late last month, the New York Islanders entered a period of transition. But after winning the NHL's draft lottery Monday night and capturing the first overall pick in this summer's NHL draft, the Islanders likely won't have to suffer for as long as some less-fortunate franchises will. And consequently, whoever replaces Lamoriello in the GM role will get a very attractive position. The Islanders' GM job always has a higher profile than many GM jobs around the league. Being in the greater New York City area puts the Isles in the spotlight. The Hockey News' Stefen Rosner also mentioned it's an appealing position for former GMs to get back in the role or a stepping stone for people who haven't been GM before. A report in the Athletic has identified a couple of candidates who could be front-runners for the role – former Montreal Canadiens GM and current L.A. Kings executive Marc Bergevin is one of them, as is former Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers GM Ken Holland. But make no mistake – the Islanders winning the draft lottery puts more shine on the team's bumper than picking ninth or 10th overall. It makes the future much clearer for the Islanders. Many hockey observers – including The Hockey News draft experts Ryan Kennedy and Tony Ferrari – project the Islanders to select defenseman Matthew Schaefer this summer. Bringing in a foundational blueliner gives the Isles exactly what they need – a bedrock asset with star potential the organization hasn't had much of since they made center John Tavares the first-overall selection in 2009. New York Islanders Win NHL Draft Lottery: Who Should They Pick First Overall? New York Islanders Win NHL Draft Lottery: Who Should They Pick First Overall? The NHL draft lottery was broadcast live for all to see, and the balls fell in the New York Islanders' favor. With Schaefer in tow, the Islanders can press fast-forward on their retool, and what GM candidate wouldn't want to be part of that process? They can select a new prospect who should lead the 'D' corps with or without No. 1 D-man Noah Dobson for the next decade-and-a-half, and they'll have the financial resources to add to the group in free agency and trades this summer. The Islanders have $28.3 million in cap space this summer, with about 14 players on their active roster under contract and seven RFAs to re-sign, including Dobson. With the opportunity to select Schaefer on the table, and with center Mat Barzal being at the beginning of his prime years, the Islanders can build a younger core that learns from their aging veterans, gets competitive experience and takes over once those veterans move on. While the Islanders needed lottery luck to have this positive spin put on their team-building situation, who cares how they got it? All that matters is that they got it and didn't have to tank in the process. Matthew Schaefer Should Be No. 1, But Will He Be In The NHL Next Season? Matthew Schaefer Should Be No. 1, But Will He Be In The NHL Next Season? The New York Islanders earned the right to select Erie Otters defenseman Matthew Schaefer, the popular front-runner to go No. 1 in the draft when they won the NHL draft lottery Monday night. In many ways, NHL GMs are no different than the rest of us – we've all got relatively short patience spans. If we have to suffer standing in a long lineup outside a chic club, we'll suffer to try to get in. But if there's a way that we can jump the line and get into that club right away, we'd be fools not to take it. That's the situation the Islanders are in. They just had the hockey gods smile upon them, and they can go about their business knowing a valuable asset fell into their lap. Islanders complete third-period comeback to beat Penguins, 4-2
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pierre Engvall scored the tiebreaking goal in New York's four-goal third period, and the Islanders rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 on Tuesday night. Kyle Palmieri had a goal and two assists, Noah Dobson added a goal and an assist, and Simon Holmstrom also scored to help New York get four goals in the third after trailing 2-0 for the second straight game. Ilya Sorokin finished with 20 saves. Sidney Crosby scored his 24th goal, Joona Koppanen got the first of his NHL career and Tristan Jarry stopped 34 shots for the Penguins, who snapped a four-game win streak. Palmieri got the Islanders on the scoreboard 17 seconds into the third as he chased down the puck after it got away from Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, skated in on Jarry and fired a shot in off the right post. Dobson tied it as he knocked in the rebound of Bo Horvat's driving attempt at 5:34. Engvall put the Islanders ahead as he beat Jarry with 6:52 left, and Holmstrom added an empty-netter with 1:32 remaining to seal the win. Koppanen gave the Penguins a 1-0 lead as he deflected Vladislav Kolyachonok's shot from the point past Sorokin 4:40 into the game. Crosby doubled the lead with 15 seconds left in the first as he knocked in the rebound of a shot by Conor Timmins. Islanders: New York won for the second time in five games and is three points out of a wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Penguins: Pittsburgh was trying for its first five-game win streak since Nov. 4-14, 2023. Instead, the Penguins fell to 5-4-1 in their last 10 games. The Penguins had several chances to score late in the final minute of the first period. Sorokin made saves on shots by Rickard Rakell and Timmins before Crosby scored to give him 1,670 points for his career. He moved past Wayne Gretzky for the fourth-most points with one franchise in NHL history. The Islanders improved to 5-21-2 when trailing after two periods, and the Penguins fell to 18-2-2 when leading after two. Islanders host Montreal on Thursday night. Penguins host Columbus on Friday.
