Trump offers Emmanuel Macron marriage advice after slap by wife Brigitte

WASHINGTON — President Trump offered up a tip for France's first family to preserve domestic tranquility after his Paris counterpart Emmanuel Macron was publicly slapped by his wife Brigitte on a foreign trip earlier this week. 'Make sure the door remains closed,' Trump chuckled in the Oval Office while responding to a question about the stunning video of Madame Macron's assault as the couple prepared to disembark in Vietnam Sunday night. 'That was not good,' Trump said of the video. 'No, I spoke to him and he's fine, they're fine. They're two really good people. I know them very well. And, I don't know what that was all about but I know him very well and they're fine.' 3 President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference with Elon Musk in the Oval Office of the White House, Friday, May 30, 2025. Everyone needs to calm down.' Brigitte, 72, is 25 years older than the French president. The two began dating when Emmanuel Macron was just 15 and a student of the drama and literature teacher, who was a married mother of three. Trump and Macron have had a notably jovial relationship since the Frenchman took office in 2017. The Macrons were the US president's guests of honor at his first state dinner in 2018, with the two men even exchanging the traditional French 'bise' on both cheeks. In subsequent years, Trump has needled Macron with hard handshakes that threaten to devolve into personal games of tug-of-war.

Macron, 47, looked shocked but managed to laugh it off before the pair descended the plane's staircase. He later told press that he and his wife were 'squabbling' in a 'joking way' — but a professional lip reader reported otherwise. 'As the aircraft door opens, President Macron is seen turning toward Brigitte. In an unexpected moment, she pushes him in the face,' a lip reader recounted to the Express . Once the leader noticed the cameras directed at them, he said 'Hi,' then raised his hand in a wave. 'Emmanuel then steps closer to Brigitte before composing himself and crossing to the other side,' the lip reader continued. Your noon-hour look at what's happening in Toronto and beyond. Macron tries again, according to the lip reader, who said Emmanuel asked his wife, 'Essayons, s'il te plait?' which translates to 'Let's try, please?' But Brigitte won't budge and responded with a terse 'non.' The lip reader added: 'His closing expression, and the phrase lip-read as 'Je vois,' translated in English, 'I see' says it all.' French President Macron pushed on face by wife, video goes viral

A video has surfaced showing French First Lady Brigitte Macron pushing President Emmanuel Macron's face aside as the couple disembarked in Vietnam to begin their regional tour. Footage shot by the Associated Press news agency in Hanoi on Sunday evening shows Macron's plane door opening to reveal him. His wife Brigitte's arms emerge from the left of the open doorway, she places both hands on her husband's face and gives it a shove. The president appears startled but quickly recovers and turns to wave through the open door. She remains concealed by the aircraft body, making it impossible to see her facial expression or body language. They were just playfighting. That was Macron 's explanation on Monday for video images that appeared to show his wife, Brigitte, pushing her husband away with both hands on his face before they disembarked from their plane to start a tour of Southeast Asia this weekend. The moment quickly made headlines in France, with media trying to decipher the interaction that cameras spotted through the just-opened door of the plane. The headline of a story on the website of the daily Le Parisien newspaper asked: "Slap or 'squabble'? The images of Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron disembarking in Vietnam trigger a lot of comment.' Macron later told reporters that the couple — married since 2007 after meeting at the high school where he was a student and she was a teacher — were simply joking around. Reuters "We are squabbling and, rather, joking with my wife,' he said, adding that the incident was being overblown into "a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.' In video taken by The Associated Press as the Macrons arrived in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Sunday, a uniformed man can be seen pulling open the plane door and revealing the president standing inside, dressed in a suit and talking to someone who wasn't visible. Two arms — in red sleeves — reached out and pushed Macron away, with one hand covering his mouth and part of his nose while the other was on his jaw. The French leader recoiled, turning his head away. Then, apparently realising that he was on camera, he broke into a smile and gave a little wave. AFP In subsequent images, Macron and his wife, wearing a red jacket, appeared at the top of the stairs. He offered an arm but she didn't take it. They walked down the carpeted stairs side by side. The French leader argued that the images and reaction to them offered a cautionary tale about disinformation in the social media age. He said that in recent weeks, other videos had been used to circulate made-up stories that he'd taken cocaine with the leaders of Britain and Germany - when, in fact, he said he'd just been picking up a tissue - and that he'd had a muscular encounter with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, when they'd been shaking and holding hands. "Everyone needs to calm down,' he said. His office also downplayed the interaction. "It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It's a moment of complicity. It was all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists,' his office said. A teacher, she supervised the drama club where Emmanuel Macron, a literature lover, was a member. He moved to Paris for his last year of high school, but promised to marry Brigitte. She later moved to the French capital to join him and divorced before they finally married. Agencies

From student-teacher affair to slapgate: Inside Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron's scandal-ridden relationship

Their relationship has been unusual. Emmanuel Macron first met his wife Brigitte when he was just 15 and she was a teacher at his school and a mother of three. They fell in love and tied the knot. Now, many years later, their marriage is under scrutiny again after a video emerged of France's First Lady reportedly shoving the president's face while disembarking from a plane read more France's President Emmanuel Macron being pushed in the face reportedly by his wife Brigitte Macron as the couple arrived in Vietnam to begin a tour of Southeast Asia, at Noi Bai International Airport, in Hanoi. Reuters Were they just horsing around or did France's First Lady Brigitte Macron slap husband, Emmanuel Macron, just as they were about to disembark from the plane to start a tour of Southeast Asia? That's the question everyone was asking after visuals showed two arms — in red sleeves — reaching out and pushing Macron away with the French president recoiling and turning his head. The fake smiles are priceless. — Reality G (@soundreece) May 26, 2025 The incident quickly became headlines in France with daily newspaper Le Parisien asking — 'Slap or squabble?' The incident has also once again put the spotlight on the French President Emmanuel's relationship with Brigitte, which began in the most scandalous of manners — she was the teacher of his drama club in school. As people continue to discuss and debate the latest 'slapgate', we take a look at the scandalous relationship between Emmanuel and Brigitte Macron. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD When boy met teacher, and they fell in love It was the year 1993; a 15-year-old Emmanuel Macron had just been admitted to La Providence, a private school founded by devout Jesuits in France's Amiens. It was here that he first met Mme Auzière (as Brigitte then was), who was the extrovert Latin, French and theatre teacher. Interestingly, Laurence, the daughter of Brigitte (she was married to a banker then), returned home from school one day raving about the talents of a classmate who was 'a crazy boy who knows everything about everything.' She then met him when the 15-year-old Macron played the lead role in a school play Jacques and his Master, by the deeply philosophical Czech writer Milan Kundera. The teen then asked the 40-year-old mother of three if she would help rewrite sections of the play The Art of Comedy by Eduardo De Filippo, to expand it to include 15 new roles. And that's when the love began to bloom. The two met every other Friday to discuss the script and slowly but steadily they became infatuated with each other. The now French First Lady later admitted, 'Little by little, I was won over by his intelligence.' A young Emmanuel Macron with his teacher, Brigitte Trogneux Auziere, then 24 years his senior and a married mother-of-three children. Image Courtesy: France 3 As rumours began to circulate over their romance, Brigitte then convinced a 17-year-old Emmanuel to go to Paris to finish his schooling. But even as he left, Emmanuel vowed to Brigitte, 'Whatever you do, I will marry you!' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD And it seems that the 17-year-old held true to his words and in 2007 when he was just 29 years old, he tied the knot with 54-year-old Brigitte in the upmarket town of Le Touquet — the same place where she had married her previous husband 33 years earlier. Brigitte wore a short white dress. Her three children attended as well as other family members and Emmanuel's own parents. 'Each and every one of you is a witness to these last 13 years,' said Macron in a toast to his bride and new family. 'And you have accepted us. You have made us what we are today … I want to thank you for loving us the way we are, and I want to thank Brigitte's children because this has not been easy for them.' Macron's gay rumours surface Once married, the couple focused on Emmanuel Macron's political ambitions. Brigitte quit her job as a teacher and began working as his main consultant when he became finance minister in the government of Francois Hollande in 2014. She stood firmly by his side when he launched his presidential campaign, weathering all sorts of attacks from the media. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron, kisses his wife Brigitte Trogneux in 2017. File image/Reuters One such attack was that Brigitte was actually a cover-up for Emmanuel, who they claimed was a homosexual. Emmanuel strongly rejected these claims, telling supporters his wife Brigitte 'shares my whole life'. Any reports of a double life were not about him but his 'hologram', he joked. And in 2017, at age 39, Emmanuel was elected the president of France, becoming the country's youngest leader ever. Speaking on the age difference — there's a 25 year age gap between the two — Brigitte then told Elle France, 'There are times in your life where you need to make vital choices. Of course, we have breakfast together, me and my wrinkles, him with his youth, but it's like that.' But that's not all. The relationship suffered another blow when rumours emerged that Brigitte was actually a man , named Jean-Michel, who had transitioned into a woman. However, this claim was found to be totally untrue and the two women who had perpetuated this lie were ordered by the court to pay €8,000 in damages to France's first lady. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Slapgate' hits Macrons And with the visuals of French President Emmanuel Macron being apparently shoved in the face on Sunday has once again reignited rumours of discord in the relationship. However, the French leader has dismissed these as just rumours, insisting that the couple was just joking around and 'everyone needs to calm down.' 'We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife,' he said, adding that the incident was being overblown: 'It becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.' 'None of these are true,' he said, and 'everyone needs to calm down'. His office issued a similar response, saying 'it was a moment of closeness' between the pair. His office's statement read: 'It was a moment where the president and his wife were decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around. It's a moment of complicity. Macron Tries to Explain Away Shove by Wife Caught on Camera

French President Emmanuel Macron has downplayed an incident showing what appears to be him being pushed in the face by his wife. Clips that have gone viral on social media show France's first lady Brigitte Macron shoving her hands onto the mouth of her husband after touching down in Vietnam for a diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia. The president then notices the plane's open door, and dutifully smiles and waves for the cameras. As the pair walk down the steps from their plane at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, Macron also seemed to offer the first lady his arm, which she didn't take. The incident sparked a flurry of debate over whether there are problems between the couple, who have been married since 2007. However, Macron was quick to offer an explanation, insisting to reporters in Hanoi that he and his wife were just 'horsing around,' the Associated Press reported. The French president added that the incident was being blown out of proportion to drum-up 'a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe.' 'Everyone needs to calm down,' Macron added. Macron's office also issued a statement downplaying the incident, saying the pair were 'decompressing one last time before the start of the trip by horsing around' and that this was 'all that was needed to give ammunition to the conspiracy theorists.' This is not the first time that French president's team have rushed to downplay rumors which have spread online. On May 11, the Élysée Palace, the official residence of the French leader, issued a formal statement on X to dismiss a conspiracy theory that Macron was taking cocaine while meeting with fellow world leaders. The claims were spread by video showing what conspiracy theorists believed Macron trying to discreetly remove a bag of white powder from view while traveling on a night train to Ukraine along with Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Germany's Chancellor Friedrich Merz. However, what Macron was actually quickly taking off the table was a screwed up white tissue paper. 'When European unity becomes inconvenient, disinformation goes so far as to make a simple tissue look like drugs,' the Élysée account posted. 'This fake news is being spread by France's enemies, both abroad and at home. We must remain vigilant against manipulation.' For years, France's first lady has also been the victim of malicious false claims pushed by the far-right and MAGA that she is a transgender woman and was born a man. The French president and his wife's relationship has long caused intrigue and controversy due to them first meeting when he was 15 years old and she was his married 39-year-old drama teacher.
