FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — Saturday night, in the 200 block of Rock Creek Parkway in Fairhope, a gunshot was fired inside a home just before 8 o'clock. Impact100 Global Conference coming to Miramar Beach, Florida A 17-year-old rising senior at Fairhope High School was shot in the neck. She was quickly rushed to a hospital, where she remains in the trauma ICU at University Hospital in Mobile. She was last listed in stable condition. The search for who pulled the trigger continues as police investigators try and question more than a dozen teenagers who had gathered for what police believe was the beginning of a party. 'It was kind of a gathering, probably moving toward a party, but at that point we had a group that was together,' said Lt. Shane Nolte with Fairhope Police. Since the shooting, investigators have made some progress and have used the term 'person of interest'. 'We hope we have an idea, but we are going to continue that investigation to make sure we know who it is,' said said the shot came from a handgun, but at this point, investigators still need to talk to some of the teenagers who may have the information that would wrap up this investigation. 'We are still having to find those folks to get all the pieces we need to continue on in the investigation,' said Nolte. He said the problem they are running into is that some of the kids they need to talk to have already gone on summer vacation and are out of town, and in some cases out of said no adults were present at the time of the shooting. The homeowner is cooperative with the police. Reports of an 'accidental discharge' have not been confirmed. Wall Street rallies after news of EU-US trade talks
(NewsNation) — A recent stock market rally has given those saving for retirement hope that the worst of President Donald Trump's trade wars has passed. Shares on Tuesday surged after Trump backed down from his threat to impose steep tariffs on the European Union as soon as June 1. Instead, Trump extended the deadline to July 9. 'Remember, I am empowered to 'SET A DEAL' for Trade into the United States if we are unable to make a deal, or are treated unfairly,' Trump said on social media. The stock market immediately bounced, snapping a four-day losing streak, as fears receded over a potential trade war with the 27-nation bloc. Apple's iPhone exports from China to the US drop Tariffs on the EU would have affected more than half a trillion dollars of goods imported to the United States annually, and would have immediately led to price increases on a wide variety of items for Americans, including medical supplies, wine, perfume and oil. The delay has allowed investors to regain hope that a deal can be made within the new timeframe. A new consumer confidence report showed a 12.3-point rise in May. The new numbers mark a major jump in American expectations for their income, business conditions and the job market, which saw its lowest reading since 2020 just last month. Paul Nolte, senior wealth adviser at Murphy and Sylvest, told Reuters investors have 'figured Trump out a little bit.' 'He's like the poker player at the table that you know is making some bets and then when pressed by the other players at the table, he folds,' Nolte said. Retirement savings: How can you save without a 401k? It's been a roller coaster ride for stock markets — and the savings plans linked to them — since tariffs went into effect. 'When (Trump) came out with guns blazing April 2, the market thought the world was ending,' Nolte said. 'The selloff was so strong and quick that you would expect some rebound, and the rebound has been so sharp and quick that you would expect some type of pullback as investors digest it and ask themselves what the terrain really looks like.' Do you believe these banking myths? For those who have avoided reviewing their 401(k)s and other savings plans amid the chaos, recent market developments could help bring these accounts back to their status quo. Despite big market swings throughout spring, the major indices have changed marginally in the long run. The Dow, the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 were down slightly heading into the opening bell after Tuesday's rally, but bond yields dipped Tuesday, meaning the value of bonds has gone up. New program helps Fairhope police better respond to mental health emergencies
FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Fairhope Police Department is taking a new approach to responding to mental health emergencies. 'We get a lot of those calls, and getting them help has not always been easy,' Fairhope police Lt. Shane Nolte said. 18 people arrested on drug and gun charges in 'Operation Azalea Trail': Mobile PD Police are partnering with AltaPoint Health to help equip patrol officers with 24-hour access to resources to use in these types of situations. On average, the Fairhope Police Department responds to around a dozen mental health related calls every week. 'A lot of our individuals who suffer with a mental illness, a lot of their crimes are misdemeanors, petty crimes, whether it's that they're loitering, whether it's that they're trespassing,' Krista Thronson with AltaPoint Health said. 'The only option that they used to have would be to arrest them.' But now there's another option. Instead of handling it alone, officers can connect with a mental health expert in real time, right from their patrol car. 'It'll make the response time quicker. It'll keep them from being tied up on scene as long,' Nolte said. 'We would rather get them help if they're having a mental health crisis than put them in jail.' When officers need to connect with a mental health care provider, it's as easy as pressing a button. 'When they get out on a situation where they need it, they can hit the home button, and it automatically pops up to the screen that's needed,' Nolte said. 'There's a red button for the officer to press for that patient. There's a blue button that also is for first responders that if they're going through something,' Thronson added. 'Basically, they press that red button, and it immediately calls one of the five of us that are on call, and they're able to speak directly to a clinician right then and there.' The program is already in use, and police said it has the potential to make a real difference, not just for the people they serve but for their own mental health as well. 'We are seeing and the statistics show that more law enforcement officers die by their own gun than in the community,' Thronson said. 'What we are really showing is not only are we there for the community; we're there for them who take care of our community.' Thronson said other departments have partnered with AltaPoint using this program and have seen great results. 'When the iPad is utilized, only about 3% of these calls end up in someone actually being arrested,' she said. 'As someone who does answer the iPad calls, the average call is about 3 to 5 minutes.' WATCH: Orange Beach Police Marine Division on high alert for spring break reckless boaters 'This makes it so much easier for us, quicker for us,' Nolte said. 'When you just have to pick up an iPad, push the home button, and then either select a red or a blue button, I mean, you're talking a matter of minutes versus it could take an hour or more in the past.' The program launched Wednesday with Fairhope police starting with one iPad per shift. Police said they hope to expand the program soon to give more officers access to this vital tool. Testimony, DNA connect Harvey man to 2020 New Lenox gas station shooting
Testimony and DNA evidence presented in court Wednesday link a Harvey man, who claims an alibi, to the scene of the 2020 shooting of 19-year-old Charles Baird at a New Lenox gas station, witnesses said. The defendant was 16 when prosecutors say he shot Baird in the back outside the Circle K gas station on Nelson Road while Baird was returning to the store. The defendant, now 21, was arrested 19 hours after the shooting on May 11, 2020 and charged as an adult. Prosecutors presented witnesses Wednesday to show the black Hyundai Santa Fe the shooter was in had been stolen two days earlier from a home in Lockport. Circle K manager Patricia Hudgens testified Baird left the store after one of the Santa Fe's occupants was seen trying the door of his vehicle. Hudgens said as Baird was returning after one of the occupants approached him, the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the back, she said. Matthew Shanahan, previously an evidence technician for the New Lenox Police Department, said he recovered a fingerprint on the rear passenger door handle of Baird's Subaru, where one of the men tried to open it, and also found a cigarette butt with DNA in the Santa Fe. A surgical mask, which a witness identified as being worn by one of the people who stole Nolte's car, was also found in the Santa Fe, Shanahan said. Prosecutors said the evidence, including DNA from the crime scene, surveillance footage from the Circle K, matching descriptions from previous arrests and the defendant's statements made to officers after his arrest strongly implicate the defendant as the person who shot Baird. Amiya Savage, a Chicago resident who was 16 at the time of the shooting, also testified she informed New Lenox police she believed the shooter to be the defendant. She also said after his arrest, he and his cousin called her, asking why she had told the police he was the one responsible. Prosecutors plan to show the jail call made to Savage on Thursday. Jason Strzelecki, a Will County public defender representing the accused shooter, said he in opening statements he will call the defendant's brother, who Strzelecki claims was with him the entire night of the shooting. Strzelecki said there was no eyewitness testimony, no murder weapon and no confession that implicate his client. The owner of the stolen Santa Fe, Gordon Nolte, testified he and his wife returned home from a grocery trip, parked the car in the garage, left the keys in the cupholder and left the garage door open. 'We went in, ate our lunch, and then I went upstairs and took a nap,' Nolte said. 'My wife came up and woke me up. We came downstairs and went to the utility room and opened the door. My car was not in the garage.' Nolte's neighbor, Christina Marinucci, testified that while out for a walk she saw two people walking down the middle of the street, closely followed by a red car. 'I walk every day, and I never see anybody in the middle of the street walking like that, let alone being followed by another by a car that close behind them,' Marinucci said. The pair then entered Nolte's garage and quickly drove off in his Hyundai Santa Fe, with both the red car and the Santa Fe leaving the neighborhood together, she said. Prosecutors said the red car, a Hyundai Elantra, was later found at the defendant's home in Harvey. The stolen Santa Fe was recovered May 15, 2020, by Dolton police when they responded to an accident. The Daily Southtown is not using the defendant's name because he was a minor at the time of the shooting. Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak will decide the case. The trial will resume Thursday at the Will County Courthouse in Joliet.
