Department store wants to cut hours for 70 staff
A well-known department store has announced it wants to cut hours for some staff due to rising costs and changes in shopping habits. About 70 members of staff working in front of house and hospitality at Jarrolds in Norwich have been asked to voluntarily change their contracts. The situation will be reviewed at the end of June to assess the uptake for these shorter contracts. John Adams, managing director for retail, said: "All retailers have been hit by rising costs since last year and we must make sensible decisions to protect both jobs and the future of the business." The history of the retailer dates back to 1770 when John Jarrold opened a grocer's and drapers in Woodbridge, Suffolk. The Jarrolds Group closed its store in Wymondham , Norfolk, after nearly four decades in September, following what the company referred to as the evolvement of "customer buying habits". Mr Adams said the retailer had recorded a "definite shift" in footfall, with the bulk of transactions taking place between 11:00 and 15:00. A change in hours would help the retailer be "more flexible" and the traditional 09:00-17:00 working pattern "no longer makes sense", Mr Adams added. "We have therefore asked colleagues working in sales and front of house hospitality roles to consider voluntarily changing their contracts to better align to footfall and sales volumes. "While this ultimately reduces their committed weekly hours, we will be offering overtime to cater for busier periods." One employee told the BBC that staff were "unhappy" and "frustrated" about the decision. Mr Adams continued: "Our priority is always to be open and honest with our team members and to try and safeguard jobs through practical solutions." Revamp aims to make Norwich's market 'magical'
A central court could be added to a city's renowned marketplace as part of plans for a major squares and a covered pathway through the middle are also options being put forward by Norwich City Harper, the Labour councillor responsible for major projects, said the authority wanted to make it "one of the most magical places you can visit in Norwich or the region". The council has now launched a survey asking for the public's views on its proposals and said it hoped to have final plans drawn up by this autumn. Earlier this year, the cabinet of the Labour-run authority agreed to spend £740,000 to commission proposals for potential new changes go ahead, it would be the first major redevelopment of the market since 2006 – when ageing, wooden stalls were replaced with metal structures with council said a central court or smaller squares could be used for "special events" and pop-up stalls, whilst a covered pathway would provide "a clear entrance point". Dominic Burke, co-owner of the Sir Toby's Beers stall, said some "exciting ideas" had been added that traders had been meeting with the council to discuss plans and it was important for the wider public to comment."The market belongs to everyone," he said the aim was to "maximise footfall" and make the site "a destination market in Europe" and that construction work could begin later this year. Valerien Ismael's unprecedented transfer wish as Blackburn Rovers wait continues
Blackburn Rovers' wait for a summer signing breakthrough continues, though they are not the only Championship club yet to break their duck. Only six signings have been announced so far across the division, including three loan deal that have been turned permanent. The three 'Citys' have been active with Jacob joining Norwich, Gustavo Puerto to Hull and Alfons Sampsted to Birmingham. The other three deals are free transfers; Hector Kyprianou to Watford plus Daniel Iversen and Jordan Thompson to Preston North End. Advertisement The summer transfer window doesn't officially open until Sunday, June 1. It will close again on Tuesday, June 10 because of the Club World Cup and then re-open on Monday, June 16 until deadline day on Monday, September 1. Valerien Ismael was adamant he wanted new faces through the door by the start of pre-season. That means it will be a busy June for Rovers if they're to meet expectations. READ MORE: Ex-Blackburn Rovers star Adam Wharton suffers setback after FA Cup final injury Negotiations are on going to sign Modipo Sagnan, a key target to bolster their centre-back options. Much will depend on the final decisions of Danny Batth and Andi Weimann as to whether they have to recruit another this window. Advertisement Talks with the out-of-contract pair remain ongoing but, as reported by The LT this week, there is a growing belief they will decide to join Derby County and reunite with John Eustace. That would be a blow and surely add to Rudy Gestede's shopping list. This time last year, there were nine deals confirmed in the Championship waiting to be officially processed when the window opened on June 14, and then there were only 21 more before the start of July. Rovers did not get their first player through the door until right at the end of the month with Makhtar Gueye signing on July 30. Ninety per cent of all signings in the Championship were announced after July 1. In fact, 50 per cent of deals were done after August 1, nearly 40 per cent were done after the first game of the season on August 10 and 25 per cent in the last two days of the window, as per number crunching from Stoke-on-Trent Live. Rovers' earliest business in recent seasons was, ironically, in the summer of 2023, where the start of the end began for Jon Dahl Tomasson. Niall Ennis penned a four-year deal on May 26 whilst Sondre Tronstad and Arnor Sigurdsson were confirmed before the end of June. They then had to wait until August to finish their business after issues in India became apparent. Players remain on holiday and the Championship season has only just officially concluded after the play-off final. But now things will begin to gear up. Maybe not in terms of 'done deals' but negotiations, agent talks and speculation.
