Jack Wilshere set to follow in Wayne Rooney's footsteps with ex-Arsenal star on shortlist to land Plymouth job
JACK WILSHERE is a frontrunner to land the Plymouth job. The former England midfielder, who was caretaker boss at Norwich for the final two games of the season, is set to have talks with the club this summer. 3 3 The Pilgrims are looking for a new boss after Miron Muslic left to join Schalke. Former Huddersfield manager David Wagner and ex-Bolton manager Ian Evatt are also in the frame. Wilshere, 32, is likely to take the job if it is offered by Plymouth, who suffered relegation to League One despite an upturn in results under Muslic. But the club could not recover after a poor run under Wilshere's former England team-mate Wayne Rooney who endured a torrid seven months in the south-west before being axed on December 31. Ex-midfielder Wilshere was Under-18s boss at Arsenal before being appointed as Norwich's first team coach in October. He took over as interim manager at Carrow Road after the sacking of Johannes Hoff Thorup. Wilshere wanted the job on a permanent basis but left the club after being told he would not get it. The Canaries are due to announce Bristol City's Liam Manning as their new manager this week. Plymouth were left angry after Muslic "broke promises" in quitting to join Schalke. Shortly prior to his exit, a bitter club statement read: "Argyle can confirm that we have reluctantly allowed Head Coach Miron Muslic to open talks with a 2. Bundesliga side after he expressed his desire to speak with the German team and not return to England. Footballers are great role models… but they need to be able to go partying, like I did, says Jack Wilshere "Despite regular communication since the end of the season, and no mention of any issues, Miron has now made it clear that, after extended periods away from his family, this opportunity provides him the chance to be closer to them after four years on the road. "We are frustrated by this decision, having implemented clear structures, processes and personnel to aid Miron and his coaching staff as we look to return to the Sky Bet Championship at the earliest opportunity. "Not only that, the club have also moved quickly to bring in new signings and received repeated verbal promises from Miron that he was committed to Argyle and would do everything to help the club bounce back to the second tier. "Muslic joined the Greens in January 2025, on a three-and-a-half-year contract, after a period out of the game having departed Cercle Brugge. "He will now leave Argyle just four months into that long-term commitment." 3

Craig Gordon hopes Serie A stars can fire Scots to World Cup
He is certain that had those opportunities amounted to anything, he would have benefitted from the chance to play in a different league, and he is equally certain that what the likes of Scott McTominay, Billy Gilmour, Lewis Ferguson and Che Adams have been exposed to in Italian football will have improved them as players. 'Absolutely,' Gordon said. 'It's a different experience. It's a different style of football. That can only add to the experience of the squad as a whole and help everybody else. It's definitely going to help. (Image: Andrew Milligan/PA Wire) 'Different managers, different style of play. All these little things. We want to have as much knowledge of that as possible within our team. It's only going to get better for us. 'When you see some of the reports and also the stats that Scotty has put in, the goals that he's scored to help them win the league, it was a tremendous achievement. 'It's brilliant to have them playing at such a high level and going into the Champions League. It's fantastic for the boys to be there to get that. 'I think everybody in the whole squad has been rooting for them.' A curious thing about goalkeepers, given that they are all vying for the one position, is that they tend to also root for one another even when they are in direct competition for the gloves, and such is the case with Gordon and Angus Gunn. Gunn, who was released by Norwich City at the end of the season, will join up with the Scotland squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein while Gordon will not. But the Hearts number one is hoping Gunn can put himself in the shop window with a couple of impressive displays for his country. 'I'm sure a goalkeeper of his quality will get picked up,' he said. 'There will definitely be teams after a goalie of that type, without a doubt. I'm sure he'll get a club, no problem. 'It's up to all the goalies around the national team to get games. It's been difficult for a few this season to get the number of games at club level to force their way into Scotland reckoning. 'But next season it all changes and there will be a few guys moving club. And every situation changes at every club. So, it's starting afresh and having to work for that all over again. 'Absolutely, he will be [challenging to be Scotland number one]. I have absolutely no doubt that he will be.' Gordon now has 81 caps for Scotland, keeping 34 clean sheets along the way, but his desire to keep going is not driven by a want to see himself climbing the all-time appearance list, but a desire to appear at a World Cup in a Scotland jersey. 'Yes, I'm still going,' he said. 'I want to play as well as I can for as long as I can, however long that may be. 'I'm in the top five [for appearances] now. There's a few just below me that I think will probably catch me one day. But certainly, for me, it's not all about the numbers. It's about still playing well and helping the team. If I'm not doing that, then I don't want to be just chasing numbers. (Image: SNS Group / SFA) 'We're going into the qualifying campaign, and from start to finish, you have three months, and you know if you're going to the World Cup or playoffs, or wherever you may be after that. 'September, October, November, two games in each. At the end of that you could know whether you're going to the World Cup or not. It's coming all over in the space of six months, and that includes the warm-up to it. 'The last game [against Greece] was disappointing. After a very good result and a good performance away, we didn't hit those heights back at Hampden. It's something that we want to get together, address, and try and not let that happen again.' *Craig Gordon was speaking at a launch event for Scotland Supporters Club (SSC) members for the new JD Buchanan Street Store, which is now open.

Craig Gordon hopes Serie A stars can fire Scots to World Cup
The veteran keeper, who has cited Italian legend Gigi Buffon as an inspiration as he continues to perform at the top level into his forties, had one or two chances to go abroad during his career that never quite materialised. Jurgen Klopp's former Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders set for shock move to become Pep Guardiola's new No2
JURGEN KLOPP'S former assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders is set to become Pep Guardiola's new No2 at Manchester City. Lijnders, 42, has been out of work since being sacked as RB Salzburg boss last December. 4 4 The Dutchman had accepted the gig after leaving Liverpool at the same time as pal Klopp. Lijnders had worked as the German's assistant over two spells across nine years. He coached the Reds for many seasons as they battled with Guardiola's City for the Prem title. According to The Times, Lijnders is now set to join his former rivals' coaching staff. They claim that he will work closely with Guardiola following the exits of a trio of the Spaniard's backroom team. Juanma Lillo and Inigo Dominguez have both left City, while Carlos Vicens has departed to take charge of Portuguese Europa League outfit SC Braga. Lijnders was considered for the vacant Norwich City head coaching job earlier this month. The Canaries sacked Johannes Hoff Thorup, and opted not to give the gig to caretaker boss Jack Wilshere full time. Could Liam Manning be Norwich City's ticket to success?
While fans of Norwich City wait for a new head coach to be announced, the coach of a rival Championship team has been earmarked as the favourite for the role. Liam Manning has been rumoured to replace Johannes Hoff Thorup, who was sacked in April, as the new head coach of the Canaries. The Bristol City head coach also had spells in charge of Oxford United, MK Dons and Belgian club Lommel. While no formal announcement has been made, could he be the person to take the Canaries to success? What is the story so far? Thorup came into the club as the successor to David Wagner in May 2024. However, he was relieved of his duties in April following a run of six defeats in eight league games with only one victory. Under the Dane, the club won 14 out of 47 games. After his exit first-team coach Jack Wilshire was put in temporary charge, but the club opted against giving him the full-time role after Norwich finished 13th in the table. He joined Thorup's backroom team in October but has now left the club. Bristol City finished the 2024-25 season in sixth under Manning, who took a leave of absence in October after the death of his son, but they lost to Sheffield United 6-0 on aggregate in the Championship play-off semi-finals. How does Manning like to coach? Manning, 39, favours three central defenders and a high-pressing also likes his teams to play out from the back, something which the Canaries struggled to do successfully last year. What is his success rate? Manning's average win percentage across his spells in the Football League with MK Dons, Oxford United and Bristol City is 43.5%. During his time at Bristol City it is 34.1%. Paul Lambert has the best figures of any permanent Canaries' manager in the past 25 years with 49.3%. However, Manning has also been credited in being instrumental in the development of players such as Arsenal and England midfielder Declan Rice. It was during his time working as the under-23's coach at West Ham United where he oversaw Rice's development from the under-17s to first-team regular and senior England international. During his 16 months in charge at MK Dons, he led them to the League One play-off semi-finals. What are his connections to East Anglia? The Norfolk-born Manning watched the likes of Bryan Gunn, Chris Sutton and Jeremy Goss at Carrow Road when he was younger. He had a season ticket during the Canaries' memorable 1992-93 Premier League season and the historic Uefa Cup campaign the next. Manning succeeded the former Canaries captain, Russell Martin, when he took on his first senior head coach role in English football at MK Dons. His long-time assistant Chris Hogg also has East Anglian connections as he is the son-in-law of George Burley, a legend at Ipswich Town, where the pair started their coaching careers in the club's academy.
