39-year-old Brendan Taylor to make Test return against New Zealand after serving 3.5-year ICC ban
Brendan Taylor playing for Nottinghamshire CCC (Photo by) Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Brendan Taylor , now 39, is making his international cricket comeback in the second Test against New Zealand. This follows his three-and-a-half-year suspension for violating the ICC's anti-corruption code, which ended on July 25. He is expected to join Zimbabwe's squad for the second Test starting August 7 in Bulawayo. "He'll obviously be available for the second Test," Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine said of Taylor's return to the side, as quoted from ANI. "But I also know how hard he's worked in his capacity -- especially over the last eight, ten (or) 12 months -- in order for this to happen. I'm very excited to have him come back into the space in the next few days, and looking forward to what he has to contribute towards the team and the group." During his suspension, he was prohibited from training with national or domestic teams. Zimbabwe has already selected a 16-member squad for the New Zealand Test series. The team includes an experienced batting lineup and Tafadzwa Tsiga as the designated wicketkeeper-batter for the first Test. Taylor, who traditionally batted at number four in Tests, might return to this position if selected. This could lead to adjustments in the batting order, with players like Sean Williams moving down to strengthen the middle order. Taylor has acknowledged that he doesn't expect an immediate return to the playing eleven. His return is focused on contributing to Zimbabwe cricket, which he admits he let down through his past actions. "I've been humbled properly," Taylor said. Poll Are you excited about Brendan Taylor's return to international cricket? Yes, absolutely! Not really. "I look forward to really just adding value, which I probably didn't do to the best of my ability when I was there before." Taylor's cricket career includes 34 Test matches for Zimbabwe from 2004 to 2021, with an average of 36.25. He has scored six Test centuries, including a notable unbeaten 105 against Bangladesh in 2011. His return coincides with a busy period for Zimbabwe cricket. The team has played seven Tests this year with one victory and has four more scheduled against New Zealand and Afghanistan. While Taylor might not immediately feature in Zimbabwe's T20 plans, he could potentially join the ODI team, particularly with the 2027 World Cup in consideration. His suspension resulted from failing to report a match-fixing offer, which was connected to an attempted blackmail involving cocaine use. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Ben Duckett helps Division One leaders Nottinghamshire to victory over Sussex
Duckett, slotting in at three, made 59 not out from just 31 balls as he clubbed four sixes and six fours in day three at Trent Bridge. Captain Haseeb Hameed made a sturdy 62no as the Rothesay County Championship Division One pace-setters hunted down a target of 148 for the loss of just one wicket to open up a 10-point lead at the top. A table-topping victory!#NOTvSUS — Nottinghamshire CCC (@TrentBridge) April 27, 2025 Seventeen-year-old spinner Farhan Ahmed had earlier dismissed Sussex skipper John Simpson and Ollie Robinson to complete second-innings figures of four for 54. Defending champions Surrey also hurried to victory against Somerset, whose early-season woes continued at the Kia Oval. The Brown Caps skittled their visitors for 119 in less than 36 overs, with Dan Worrall and Jordan Clark taking three cheap wickets apiece, leaving a simple chase of 36. England vice-captain Ollie Pope was dismissed for one run for the second time in the match, a bump back to earth after a century last week, but international team-mate Jamie Smith was on hand to hitting the winning runs on his return to county cricket for an eight-wicket win. GET IN! 🥳🤩#Foxes🦊 — Leicestershire CCC 🦊 (@leicsccc) April 27, 2025 In Division Two, leaders Leicestershire came through nail-biting finish against Gloucestershire with a tense two-wicket success. The Foxes took eight for 63 as the home side lost their way with an under-par 152 all out. Ian Holland claimed four for 32 and the returning Josh Hull nabbed two more scalps on his comeback appearance. Pursuing a modest 143 for victory, Leicestershire squeaked home eight down, with a battling 47 from Ben Cox the decisive contribution. Dominic Goodman was unlucky to be on the losing side as he struck four times with the new ball to take his match tally to nine for 87. In the only game heading heading into the fourth and final day, Middlesex were forced to follow on by Derbyshire. They were bowled out for 315 in reply to 472, Zak Chappell collecting four for 55 as Ben Geddes and Jack Davies hit fifties. They were 60 for one after being sent back in, reaching stumps 97 behind.

Aussie O'Neill strikes again as top county bowler
Australia's Sheffield Shield player of the season continues to take the county championship by storm, with Nottinghamshire quick Fergus O'Neill regaining his position atop the list of the season's most prolific wicket-takers in the English first-class game. The 24-year-old Victorian, who's swiftly established himself as a new favourite at Trent Bridge since joining Notts, has been instrumental in helping drive them to joint-top of the first division table with his quick-bowling salvos. And though he had missed out on taking any wickets in the first innings of their latest home match against Sussex as Josh Tongue and Brett Hutton took the spoils, O'Neill was back at the heart of the action on Saturday as his three wickets helped propel Notts in sight of another victory. Brilliance, from every angle.#NOTvSUS | 📺 — Nottinghamshire CCC (@TrentBridge) April 26, 2025 His triple strike in 12 overs that ripped the heart out of Sussex's resistance was headed by an instinctive piece of fielding brilliance off his own bowling when, seemingly a touch off-balance, he stuck out his right hand to snaffle a full-blooded drive from opener Tom Haines when he was going along swimmingly on 64. The caught-and-bowled came after he had trapped Tom Alsop lbw and before he had Oli Carter caught expertly at slip by England opener Ben Duckett, the three wickets helping reduce Sussex to 7-195 in their second innings, still only 64 ahead with three wickets remaining. Duckett's buckets 🧤#NOTvSUS | 📺 — Nottinghamshire CCC (@TrentBridge) April 26, 2025 It also brought his haul of wickets for the season to 21, more than anyone else in either division of the championship, but Notts will be disappointed to be losing his services after this match as his deal was just to play the first month of the season to cover for South African Dane Paterson. Another Australian who's been in good form, 36-year-old Sussex opener Dan Hughes, had earlier been dismissed for 25 by the much-touted English teenage spinner Farhan Ahmed, 17-year-old younger brother of another legspinning prodigy, Rehan Ahmed. In the second-division clash at Bristol being presided over by two Australian county captains, Gloucestershire's Cam Bancroft and Leicestershire's Peter Handscomb, home opener Bancroft looked set to finally get some runs on the board after a lean match for the pair and Gloucester's big-name Aussie signing Cam Green. Bancroft (31*) and O Price (35*) digging deep in tricky conditions ⛅Glos are currently 73/1 with a lead of 63.#BecomeGlorious — Gloucestershire Cricket 🏆 (@Gloscricket) April 26, 2025 Bancroft knuckled down in the final session of day two to finish unbeaten on 36 as he guided his side to 2-88, only 78 ahead in their second innings after Dom Goodman's maiden first-class five-wicket haul had helped the home side bowl out Leicester for 262. That 36no represented 24 more than the three Aussies had managed between them in their first knocks, and Bancroft will be looking to kick on towards his second century of the season after his 163 on the same ground against Glamorgan in his opener. Meanwhile, champions Surrey, who've made a disappointing start to their title defence, established a 38-run lead in their clash with Somerset, with three of their England batters Rory Burns, Jamie Smith and Dom Sibley making half-centuries as they finished on 7-321 in response to Somerset's first innings 283. Dan Worrall, Australia's would-be England quick who was named as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Year earlier in the week, ended with 2-50 off his 21 overs for Surrey.
