Egyptian Nouran Gohar is now the top-ranked women squash player in the world. NOURAN Gohar said she started her athletic life as a swimmer and rhythmic gymnast. She hated both, often sobbing through strict gymnastic training sessions that would last at least five hours.

Egyptian Squash Players Rule the Women's Game
Nouran Gohar said she started her athletic life as a swimmer and rhythmic gymnast. She hated both, often sobbing through strict gymnastic training sessions that would last at least five hours. She played handball, too, becoming good enough to be recruited for the Egyptian junior national team. But the day, at age 9, that she jumped on a squash court, just for fun with her father, fireworks figuratively exploded in the air. 'That day was the beginning of my career,' said Gohar, 27, speaking by phone during the British Open last month in Birmingham, England. 'It was the first time I was really having fun in a sport.' Gohar is now the top-ranked women's squash player in the world. She has reached the final of the British Open seven times, securing her third championship last month. She has won the U.S. Open four times and captured the Professional Squash Association Women's World Championship in 2024. Another Egyptian, Nour El Sherbini, who first held a squash racket when she was 6, is ranked No. 2. With eight titles, she is tied with Nicol David from Malaysia for having won the most Women's World Squash Championships. Hania El Hammamy, the third-ranked player, and Amina Orfi, at No. 5, are also Egyptians who started young. Over the last decade, 19 of the 20 finalists at the world championships have been from Egypt. PSA Announces Final 2024/2025 Season Rankings
Rana Atef The Professional Squash Association has announced the new world rankings for June, following the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season. Egyptian squash stars continue to dominate the global standings. Mostafa Asal, representing Palm Hills, maintained his position at the top of the men's world rankings for the 14th consecutive week. Meanwhile, Nouran Gohar, also of Palm Hills, extended her reign atop the women's rankings for the 29th week in a row. Makin makes history with PSA Squash Tour Finals title win
British number one Joel Makin has become the first Welsh player to win the PSA Squash Tour Finals after he beat world number one Mostafa Asal at Toronto's Revival Film Studios. The 30-year-old won the first two games 11-10, 11-7, before Asal, 24, retired from the match due to an ankle injury after the Egyptian went 1-0 behind in the third game. Advertisement Makin was appearing in the first major PSA final of his career and he has now won the 10th - and biggest - title of his career. It is Makin's second title of the season after also winning the Silicon Valley Open in October 2024. "I've just been chipping away, and it's not been a short process, that's for sure," said Makin. "It was a really high quality one, the same as last night [against Diego Elias]. We had two really good games, it was frustrating in the third that we didn't get to keep going. "At sudden death again in the first game, it was really high quality. It's upsetting that he [Asal] wasn't right. Advertisement "I'm happy to win, but I want that challenge, I want to win. I want to see how I am against him when he's playing well. "It's been another good week, it wasn't my best stuff in the group stages, but you've just got to keep trying, keep on getting better and come out and bring my best performance on the night."
