Soccer-Forest face busy season with urgent need for reinforcements, Nuno says

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Premier League - West Ham United v Nottingham Forest - London Stadium, London, Britain - May 18, 2025 Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo reacts Action Images via Reuters/Matthew Childs/File Photo (Reuters) -Nottingham Forest are short of options across the pitch and in urgent need of reinforcements for the start of the season, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said on Friday, warning that a lack of depth could hamper their first European campaign since 1996. Forest are set to play in the Europa League, having been promoted in Crystal Palace's place after the Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed the London club's appeal against UEFA's decision to demote them to the Conference League. Forest have signed four players -- forwards Dan Ndoye and Igor Jesus, defender Jair Cunha and goalkeeper Angus Gunn, who joined on a free transfer from Norwich City. There have been eight departures, including winger Anthony Elanga's move to Newcastle United and Brazilian midfielder Danilo's switch to Botafogo, with Nuno describing his squad as unbalanced ahead of their Premier League opener at home to Brentford on Sunday. "I am concerned. We need players. Especially about the game on Sunday, we are going to play a tough game against a good team and we are short on options to give solutions that the game might need," Nuno told reporters. "What we want is game-by-game to have as many options as possible. The first points are always vital. Europa (League) will come after and for sure it could be better but for now these games until that happens is a major concern." Forest are reported to be on the verge of completing a few signings, but Nuno said the uncertainty has created an atmosphere of unease at the Midlands club. "Dealing with doubts are the worst thing you can have in football. We have doubts, who is going to be, when are they going to come? All these things create doubts. Not only (for) me but in the club," he added. "Nicolas Dominguez is injured, Danilo is not here so we need midfielders, on the wings also. In front we have Igor, Chris (Wood) and (Taiwo Awoniyi) but maybe another body would be good because of the amount of games. "I think we need another option for the goalkeeper situation, on the defensive line full backs. I think we are OK in the centre halves." Nuno raises Nottingham Forest transfer 'concern' despite closing on deals for two English stars

James McAtee is set to sign from Manchester City and Omari Hutchinson could arrive from Ipswich but Nuno wants new signings in every area bar one before transfer deadline Downbeat Nuno Espirito Santo is worried by Nottingham Forest's lack of transfer business - despite the club closing in on two of England's most promising youngsters. ‌ James McAtee is in line to complete a £30m move from Manchester City, while negotiations continue over a club record deal of about £38m for Ipswich star Omari Hutchinson. ‌ Forest have also added Dan Ndoye for £34m, as a replacement for Anthony Elanga, and tied down star midfielder Morgan Gibbs White to a new contract. ‌ But after a worrying pre-season in which the team scored just once in seven friendlies, Nuno has raised the alarm ahead of their curtain-raiser at home to Brentford on Sunday afternoon and a first campaign in Europe for 30 years. 'I'm concerned,' he said. 'We're short on options, having solutions the game might need is a major concern. The problems will be 'ifs' during the game, problems that arise, we need options and solutions. 'Things are moving, potentially, medicals and then let's see. We need players but for sure, they are not going to be available for Sunday. We are aware of the needs, the club knows.' Striker Arnaud Kalimuendo could also arrive from Rennes but Nuno believes every area apart from centre-back requires strengthening in the next fortnight. He added: "We need another option for the goalkeeper situation. On the defensive line full backs, I think we're OK in the centre halves. Dominguez is injured, Danilo is not here so we need midfielders, on the wings also. Up front we have Igor [Jesus], Chris [Wood] and [Taiwo Awoniyi] but maybe another body would be good because of the amount of games." ‌ The Portuguese boss has been hoping to change the team's style having qualified for Europe thanks to a reliance on counterattacking last season. That was despite a late-season slide in which a tired, shallow squad won just two of their final eight games - strengthening his argument for getting more bodies through the door. He added: "Dealing with doubts is the worst thing you can have in football. We have doubts, who is going to be here, when are they going to come? All these things create doubts. Not only for me but in the club.' "I already told the players exactly what I said publicly. Let's be stronger, let's make an extra effort, help the team. Those who are here are focused and ready to compete. What is the problem is if something happens, that's the doubt."

🎧'I wouldn't worry too much about pre-season'

Paul Taylor - Nottingham Forest writer at The Athletic - speaking on the Shut Up and Show More Football podcast about Forest's pre-season campaign: "You have to be a little bit worried on some scale with Forest only scoring one goal, but pre-season is never a proper pedometer of how you will fare. "There have been times when Forest have had really good pre-seasons and then that has not carried through to the start of their campaign. "When you have only scored one goal in all the pre-season matches you have played then obviously that is a concern, especially when you have lost Anthony Elanga, who was one of the most creative outlets. "But all that matters is that they are ready to go and are injury free. I wouldn't worry what happens too much in pre-season."Nottingham Forest continued their pre-season preparations with a goalless draw against Serie A side Fiorentina at the City Ground on Wednesday evening. Their final friendly is on Saturday when Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadsiah visit the City Ground (17:30 BST).On the transfer market and Nuno's hopes: "Instead of trying to compete with lower end Premiership teams, Forest are competing with teams like Newcastle and Manchester United. That is a whole different kettle of fish. They will find it difficult to compete with teams who have so much history. "As Forest continue to try and build their rise, they have got to find of way to be clever again and compete in something that isn't a level playing field. "Their recruitment has been brilliant, but there is pressure to keep being brilliant when the landscape is changing."Nuno still wants to add four, maybe five signings. He definitely needs full-backs. "When you have lost players like Alex Moreno and Harry Toffolo, you need to add some new players. They want another winger as well."It will be interesting to see if their recruitment is as good as it has been in recent years."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

'Very concerned' or 'get a grip' - fans on Forest's pre-season

We asked for your views on the upcoming season after a run of no wins in five pre-season friendly are some of your comments:Peter: I honestly can't believe all this hysteria about pre-season. Get a grip everyone, this is all about minutes in the legs and trying different things out. Gee I'm worried. Losing runs are hard to stop. It began towards end of last season. I was hoping pre-season would reset that run but it hasn't. I know Nuno has to experiment, but the two remaining home games must show a marked improvement or we'll have little confidence to start the Man-management is Forest's secret weapon. We can get too hung up on the departure of key personnel like Anthony Elanga, Brennan Johnson and, of course, Steve Cooper. Our success again this season will stem from Marinakis' handling of Nuno and his close connection to the players, and how well the club quickly integrates new We need to speed up the recruitment of quality players in key areas. We don't have enough goal threat and just two decent full-backs. Not panicking just yet, but definitely Very, very concerned. Not only the fact that the rest of the Premier League have worked out how to play against us, but the midweek away games in the far flung ends of Europe will be a killer. Plus the fact that we now have another team who hates us and are bound to get six points off us - Crystal One goal in five pre-season friendlies hardly fills supporters with confidence ahead of the new season. The lack of goals is a worry but so is the lack of chances being created. People will say they are only friendlies and that Nuno has played a lot of reserve and fringe players in these games - but it doesn't bode well for the Not feeling confident about this season. OK, we've held onto Gibbs-White for now and replaced Elanga. But we've added two cheap Botafogo players and shipped a lot more out. The squad is already a lot smaller than last year. I think we'll not get far in Europe and see us in the bottom quarter of the Premier League this year.
