NDTV Exclusive: Meet India's First Fully Home-Grown AI+ Smartphone

India now has its first-ever, wholly Made-in-India smartphone. This device is designed, engineered, and governed entirely in India. Madhav Sheth, the visionary behind NxtQuantum Shift Technologies, discussed the AI+ Smartphone in an exclusive conversation with NDTV. At a time of data privacy issues, cybercrimes, and hidden surveillance, many smartphones are built to snoop. This one is different. The AI+ Smartphone focuses on protection, keeping your data secure under Indian laws and away from foreign access. Mr Sheth, a veteran in the Indian smartphone industry and former co-founder and CEO of realme India, combines Atmanirbhar Bharat ideals with next-generation AI innovation. He shared his mission with NDTV, stating that he wants to challenge foreign dominance, emphasise digital sovereignty, and create a global tech brand from India. The Indian smartphone market, valued at Rs 5 lakh crore, is mostly driven by foreign brands, which hold 80% of the market. Mr Sheth is ready to change that. "It's time for Indian brands to showcase their strength," he stated. "No major attempts have been made to challenge this dominance in the past decade. After two decades in this smartphone environment, I am determined to take on this challenge. My experience with several Chinese brands has given me deep insights into their supply chains," he said. The AI+ Smartphone runs on NxtQuantum OS, a full-stack platform with cloud infrastructure hosted in India, locally designed hardware, and a focus on privacy. It relies on Google India's MeitY-approved cloud servers and Flipkart's nationwide distribution, marking a significant step toward trusted, inclusive technology. "It is time for homegrown Indian brands to go global," Mr Sheth declared, aiming to make India a global design hub. Digital Sovereignty as Strategic Infrastructure Mr Sheth emphasised that genuine self-reliance means India needs to own its operating systems, cloud, and code. "Current smartphones send data through foreign systems without user control," he remarked. "'Made in India' means little if software and updates come from abroad," he said. NxtQuantum OS keeps data on MeitY-approved Google Cloud servers, ensuring it meets Indian laws. "Sovereignty means keeping user data under Indian laws, by design," he added. Privacy is essential for the AI+ Smartphone. Unlike other devices designed to extract data, it provides a real-time privacy dashboard that shows who accessed data and when. "Data security is based on transparency," Mr Sheth said. "When apps access sensitive data, like phone calls, AI+ Smartphone users can choose to opt out. Right now, 50-60% of apps collect data to make money, often without clear disclosure. Educating consumers on this is vital," he said. By following the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, NxtQuantum gives users control over their data and makes privacy a default feature. India-First, Built for a Billion Designed for India's diverse needs, the AI+ Smartphone was tested in 80 districts to support users who switch languages mid-sentence. It's ready for Aadhaar, UPI-enabled, and built for offline use to ensure everyone can access it. "India isn't one user. It's a billion patterns," Mr Sheth said. Running on Android 15, the device includes advanced features like Gemini and locally developed Large Language Models (LLMs). "The term 'AI' has been used too much, but generative AI is now a basic feature in smartphones," Mr Sheth explained. "By 2030, there will be a billion smartphone users. To close the digital gap in India, our A-grade smartphone is as affordable as 2G devices. This makes business sense, helping users upgrade and join India's digitization journey," he said. Free of bloatware and spyware, the AI+ Smartphone focuses on performance and simplicity. "When you build everything here-from the OS to hardware-you avoid paying royalties abroad," Mr Sheth said. "That's real savings we can pass to consumers. Keeping more dollars in India means more people online." A Call to Action for Industry and Government Mr Sheth urged the Indian industry to take action, noting that Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) benefits currently favour Chinese brands. "The government is offering support, but Indian companies must step up. We need intervention to ensure these benefits help Indian firms," he said. With India's skilled workforce, he sees a strong tech ecosystem developing. "Transferring technological expertise is essential. India has plenty of skilled talent, but we must also focus on execution to turn our potential into reality." NxtQuantum is developing an ecosystem with over 280 service centers and upcoming launches like NxtMove, NxtVault, and NxtTheme Designer. Developer APIs will soon support an India-first app ecosystem, driving innovation. India's Moment on the Global Stage For Mr Sheth, launching NxtQuantum was a national responsibility. "Leaving a successful brand to create something sovereign wasn't a risk. Staying quiet was," he said. "This is India's moment to build a global tech brand from scratch-and I couldn't ignore it," he said. The AI+ Smartphone aims to change perceptions around authorship, trust, and access. "India must become a global design hub, not just a tech consumer," Mr Sheth asserted.

NxtQuantum launches Ai+ Smartphones in India with focus on data privacy and affordability

NxtQuantum launched the Ai+ smartphones that the company claims are the first to be fully designed and built entirely in India, governed on Indian infrastructure with uncompromising data privacy, where users gain true control over how their data is stored, accessed and protected. Powered by NxtQuantum OS, India's first mobile operating system built on Android 15 platform, the Ai+ smartphones strive to deliver performance, affordability and privacy to the users. It aims to redefine what ownership, transparency and digital trust should look like in the smartphone era. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD NxtQuantum OS The company further states that these phones will give Indian users an alternative to foreign-built devices with opaque software ecosystems, giving them full visibility and control over their data. In the words of Madhav Sheth, CEO - Ai+ Smartphone and Founder - NxtQuantum Shift Technologies, 'Ai+ Smartphone is about putting control back in the hands of Indian users. For years, we've relied on phones and platforms that were never made with India in mind. Ai+ Smartphone changes that. These phones are fast, beautifully designed, and most importantly, they keep your data safe'. Ai+ smartphones are manufactured in India by United Telelinks Limited at their Noida factory. Everything from software to supply chain has supposedly been aligned to India's needs, focusing on how users live, work, learn and connect. Other than long battery life, HD displays and dual SIM flexibility, the phones support regional languages, local content, and a customisable experience through NxtQuantum's Theme Designer Tool. While India boasts of 800 million smartphone users, there are still over 400 million that use feature phones. The company aims to target a sizable chunk of this user base with their entry-level model priced under Rs 5,000 and shift them to a smart device. As for the former, the company claims that most smartphones today route user data through third-party systems outside the country with little visibility or control. Ai+ smartphones will fix that by storing personal data, from app preferences to backups, in India, utilising MeitY (Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology)-empanelled Google Cloud Regions. Moving on to the devices, NxtQuantum launched two smartphones in India - the Ai+ Pulse and Ai+ Nova 5G. Both phones sport 6.7-inch HD+ displays, 5000 mAh batteries, 50MP rear cameras, come in multiple colour options and run Android 15 with NxtQuantum OS that offers a plethora of data privacy settings. Each phone is expected to receive at least one more major Android update and multiple security updates going forward. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD AI+ Pulse and Nova 5G specifications The Ai+ Pulse is a 4G device that is powered by a Unisoc T615 chip with either 4 GB RAM + 64 GB storage or 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage options. The Ai+ Nova 5G, as the name suggests, is 5G-ready with a Unisoc T8200 chip and comes with either 6 GB or 8 GB RAM options, both with 128 GB storage. Both phones come with a microSD slot to expand the storage up to 1 TB. While the display size and resolution are the same for both phones, the one on the Pulse has 90 Hz refresh rate and Nova's goes to 120 Hz. AI+ Nova The Ai+ Pulse is priced at Rs 4,999 for the base variant, going up to Rs 6,999 for the top variant with 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage. It will be available on Flipkart starting from 12th July 2025 noon. The Ai+ Nova 5G is priced at Rs 7,999 for the 6 GB RAM variant and Rs 9,999 for the one with 8 GB RAM. That too will be available on Flipkart but a day later. All models will be sold for Rs 500 less at launch along with other introductory offers. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD AI+ Pulse In addition to the new phones, the company plans to build an ecosystem of products, and the company teased a first of those called Wearbuds. It is a unique product that combines a fitness watch and TWS (true wireless) earbuds into a single device. Basically, the watch shell acts as a charging case for the buds. The watch has a 1.43-inch AMOLED touchscreen display and tracks health and fitness parameters like heart rate, blood oxygen level and multiple sports and activities in addition to other features. Wearbuds - key features How its 310 mAh battery will balance the watch's needs and that of the TWS buds remains to be seen. Speaking of the buds, each of them is fitted with a 6 mm dynamic driver and a 25 mAh battery that gives it about 3 hours of playtime. The Bluetooth 5.3 compliant product supports SBC and AAC codecs and sports IPX4-rated sweat resistance. The Wearbuds will be available sometime in August with the pricing yet to be disclosed but hinted to be above Rs 5,000.
